About Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Ashbourne Animal Welfare was established in 1988 after a group of local animal lovers came together to form a dedicated rescue organisation for animals in need. Initially relying on foster homes, fundraising events, and community support, the charity steadily grew as more animals required care. In 2001, Ashbourne Animal Welfare realised its long-term ambition of opening a purpose-built rescue and rehoming centre known as The Ark, providing improved facilities for cats and dogs. Today, the charity has a strong local supporter base and a long track record of rescuing, caring for, and rehoming thousands of animals, all driven by a continued commitment to welfare, compassion, and community involvement.

Bear, a 1 year old male Labrador available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Bear

Derbyshire
SexMale
Age1 year
BreedLabrador

Bear is a lovely young lad who came to us for rehoming due to being part of an unplanned litter that didn’t find a home, he came in with his Brother, Joey. He’s a mix of breeds… his Mum is a Labrador/Husky mix, and his Dad is a medium sized foreign rescue. He is slightly bigger than Joey.Unfortunately Bear hasn’t ever been walked so hasn’t had any socialisation with dogs, apart from the several dogs in his previous home… he can be vocal when he see’s another dog out on walks, but we feel that this is simply that he doesn’t know how to react. We are confident that with a routine, regular outings and plenty of training he will make a fantastic companion! He’s clever and seems keen to please.Bear is very affectionate with people, he gets very excited – a typical puppy! He loves a cuddle! He has lived with children and could go to a new home with children over 5yrs.Bear is still very much a puppy… and has received very little training. He will be good fun, but will also need a fair amount of work with his training and socialisation. He has always had other dogs for company when left, so time alone would need to be built up gradually.

Bobbi, a 3 years old female Staffordshire Bull Terrier available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Bobbi

Derbyshire
SexFemale
Age3 years
BreedStaffordshire Bull Terrier

Bobbi is a lovely Staffordshire Bull Terrier crossbreed who came to us for rehoming due to her previous owner being unwell. She came to us with her Sister, Lola. Bobbi and Lola do get along well, so we would be open to the idea of them finding a home together. She’s friendly with people and has been around children, she could go to a family home. She is boisterous and does jump up, so any children in the home would need to be familiar with dogs. She’s an affectionate girl who’s been used to lots of company.Sadly Bobbi can be dog reactive when she’s out – she can be quite vocal and this is something that will need work on in the new home. Her reactivity sets Lola off too. She’s not lived with cats.Bobbi is a energetic little dog who loves to run in our exercise fields and play ball! She would benefit from a secure garden to play in! Although she has short legs, she is an agile little soul and can jump high.

Cali, a 4 years old female Siberian Husky available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Cali

Derbyshire
SexFemale
Age4 years
BreedSiberian Husky

Cali is a young Husky crossbreed who originally came to us through no fault of her own… she came to us with her Sister, Who has since been rehomed. Sadly their owner realised that they had bitten off more than they could chew by taking on the Sisters as puppies, as well as already having 2 existing dogs and 3 cats in the home. Sadly Cali wasn’t receiving the time and attention that she needed and was spending a lot of the time in the kitchen – now that Cali had matured, she had taken a bit of a dislike to one of the smaller dogs and the cats.Cali is generally a friendly, sociable girl but can be a little wary of some new people initially… however once she knows you, she is your best friend! She’s always super excited to greet the staff and volunteers when they arrive! She’s a real cuddler! She’s definitely a favourite with some of the volunteers and even benefits from occasional outings to go and explore – where she has been impeccably behaved!Since she has been with us, we have worked on her training and she will now walk nicely on a lead wearing her head collar. She does seem quite clever, and keen to please…so continued training would be beneficial. She will need somebody with a lot of time to dedicate to her. Her time alone will need to be built up, as she’s always had company. She’s affectionate, and ā€˜smiles’ at people to say hello! We did rehome Cali but sadly she was returned. Cali has been known to display jealous and/or possessive tendencies around ā€˜her people’ which is why we think she would be suited to somebody who lives alone and can work with her one on one. We also believe that Cali would need to be the only pet in the home.

Coapy, a 7 years old male Border Collie x Large Munsterlander available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Coapy

Derbyshire
SexMale
Age7 years
BreedBorder Collie x Large Munsterlander

Coapy is a handsome fella who originally came to us for rehoming due to a house move. He’s a Border Collie x Munsterlander… meaning he is intelligent, and likes to be kept busy!Prior to coming to us, Coapy wasn’t walked much. This has left him with anxieties about the outside world, and he will react to sounds etc. He gets very stressed and would need a home where he can get plenty of exercise in the garden and mental stimulation to keep him busy… until he feels more comfortable. It was reported that Coapy was reactive to cars when out on walks – whilst we haven’t seen any signs of this whilst he’d been in out care, it is something that his adopters would need to be aware of.Coapy seems to be good with other dogs, and has lived with cats in his previous home.. so may be able to share his home with other pets again. He has lived with children, and could live with children again (8yrs and over).Coapy is incredibly friendly, and affectionate… he loves people and will do anything for a cuddle! He really enjoys spending time with our volunteers, and he’s a firm favourite amongst them! He gets lots of enrichment activities including puzzle feeders, snuffle mats and noise boxes. His previous owner reported that Coapy did have some separation anxiety, so he would be better in a home where he wont be left for long periods… he would need further work to help him to feel comfortable being left alone. We did rehome Coapy, but sadly it didn’t work out for a couple of reasons – mainly his anxiety when out on walks, causing him to be very pully and not focus on anything. But separation anxiety was also a problem too. He did share the home with several cats and another dog that he was fine with.

Dream, a 6 years old female Greyhound available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Dream

Derbyshire
SexFemale
Age6 years
BreedGreyhound

Dream is a lovely Greyhound who came to us for rehoming after she retired from racing. She’s a friendly girl, who seems to really enjoys being around people… however she can be a little timid when she meets people who she doesn’t know.Dream walks nicely on the lead, but can be a little ā€˜bossy’ with other Greyhounds..! She has shared her kennel before coming to us, and may be able to live with a quiet, good natured male – but this would depend on a dog meeting. She can be reactive to smaller dogs, and isn’t cat friendly. She would benefit from a quiet home with a nice garden where she can laze around and play with her toys – she seems to really enjoy soft toys. Due to her desire to chase, she would need to be kept on lead during her walks… with the use of her garden or secure exercise paddocks for her to stretch her legs!Dream was adopted, but unfortunately got returned due to her displaying a behaviour in the home that her adopter was comfortable with. Dream growled when she was woken up, and for this reason she will need a home without children.

Freya, a 11 months old female English Springer Spaniel available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Freya

Derbyshire
SexFemale
Age11 months
BreedEnglish Springer Spaniel

Freya is a lovely Springer Spaniel crossbreed who came to us for rehoming through no fault of her own – her owners didn’t have the time to give her the exercise and attention she needs. She’s a lovely girl, very friendly and affectionate… but also with a lot of energy and zest for life! She approaches everything full on and seems to be a pretty confident dog! She settled into the kennels straight away, and made friends with everybody! She has been around children, and could go to a home with children again, however we would advise that any children in the home are used to bouncy dogs!Freya has lived with another dog, and they got along great… however she can be vocal when on her walks here. We believe that this is more of an excitement vocalisation. She may be able to share her home with a good natured male dog, but this would depend on a dog meeting here at the Ark. She’s not cat friendly, and has opened the cage and chased pet rabbits too.She absolutely loves her walks! She’s very active and has lots of energy to burn! She’s still a baby after all! She particularly enjoys her time off lead in our exercise compounds, playing with the toys! She can be pully on the lead, as she’s not really been walked much in her previous home. She’s had very little in the way of training, so this is something that her new owners would need to consider, and be able to devote time to.

He’s a mix of breeds… his Mum is a Labrador/Husky mix, and his Dad is a medium sized foreign rescue. He is slightly smaller than Bear.Unfortunately Joey had never been walked so didn’t have any socialisation with dogs, apart from the several dogs in his previous home… he can be vocal when he see’s another dog out on walks, but we feel that this is simply that he doesn’t know how to react – we have introduced him to several dogs here in our care and he has been find after the initial vocalisation. We are confident that with a routine, regular outings and plenty of training he will make a fantastic companion! He’s clever and seems keen to please.Joey is very affectionate with people, he gets very excited – a typical puppy! He loves a cuddle! He has lived with children and could go to a new home with children over 5yrs.Joey is still very much a puppy in his brain… he’s hadn’t had any training, but we have started to teach him the basics! He will be good fun, but will also need a fair amount of work with his training and socialisation.Joey did find a home, but sadly he was returned after 3wks, due to his separation anxiety in the home. He found it difficult to settle without all of ā€˜his people’ present, and if left alone he would continually jump up at the doors/windows. He will need a home where people are around majority of the time, and he may be better living with another dog for company – but this would depend on a dog meeting.

Loki, a 2 years old male Siberian Husky available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Loki

Derbyshire
SexMale
Age2 years
BreedSiberian Husky

Loki is a very handsome Husky who came to us for rehoming through no fault of his own… sadly since getting him as a puppy, his previous owners circumstances changed meaning that Loki was being left alone for up to 12hrs a day! Unfortunately the cartoons on the TV weren’t cutting it, so he became destructive and vocal.Loki is very friendly and affectionate with people… he loves life and likes to be on the go! He’s sociable with everybody he meets and has spent time with children – he can be boisterous though, so any children in the new home would need to be used to dogs.He seems friendly with other dogs – although he is vocal when he sees other dogs on his walks, we believe this is excitement and he’s desperate to go and say hi! He could share his home with a spayed female companion, this would depend on a dog meeting. Loki will chase cats and other small animals, so will need a home without any of these! As he’s a Husky, Loki will need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation… he’s a breed that was designed for working, so he’s not going to be a couch potato content with a quick walk around the block! His recall is poor (typical for a Husky), so off lead time would need to be in a secure garden or a secure dog exercise paddock.Obviously he isn’t a fan of being left alone, although his previous owner reported that he was good at being left for 3hrs initially. We would recommend time alone being built up over time, so he see’s it as a positive experience.

She is boisterous and does jump up, so any children in the home would need to be familiar with dogs. She’s an affectionate girl who’s been used to lots of company.Lola can be dog reactive when she’s out, mainly because Bobbi starts reacting and she joins in. This is something that needs to be worked on in the home. She’s not lived with cats.Lola is a energetic dog who loves to run in our exercise fields! She does play with toys, but is more treat orientated. She would benefit from a secure garden to play in!

Marley, a 11 years old male Siberian Husky x Staffordshire Bull Terrier available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Marley

Derbyshire
SexMale
Age11 years
BreedSiberian Husky x Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Marley is a handsome older gentleman who was originally adopted from us 9yrs ago, sadly he has been returned due to his adopter moving out of the family home and the rest of the family not being able to look after him and give him the attention he needs.Marley is very friendly, he loves people and is always happy to say hello to people! He would be a lovely companion, and doesn’t ask for much!Unfortunately Marley can be reactive to other dogs, and would need to be the only dog in the home. He can be strong on the lead, so please take this into consideration when enquiring. He’s also reactive to cats, and would be better in a pet free home.

Orson, a 5 years old male Border Collie available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Orson

Derbyshire
SexMale
Age5 years
BreedBorder Collie

Orson is a very handsome Border Collie who came to us for rehoming through no fault of his own. His original owner sadly passed away, leaving 8 dogs… the family tried to take them on and care for them but sadly not all of the worked out. We have had Orsons Mum here, and his younger brother too… both were lovely dogs, and Orson fits that mould too! He’s a lovely lad.Unfortunately Orson has been spending lots if time on his own, either on a farm or in a kennel… he’s never lived in a home before, so he may take some time to adjust to being indoors – he’s a bright lad though, and we are confident that it wont take long for him to get the ā€˜house rules’.He’s lived with several other dogs, and whilst he was said to be the bottom of the pack, he’s good with others and tends to ignore them… especially if there’s a ball involved. He seems workable with cats – he showed and interest, but was respectful when the cats told him off. He could share his home with other pets with the right introductions etc. He has also been used to children.Orsons number one love in life is his ball! He will do anything for a ball! If he can’t find a ball… then a stone will do! Whilst it is nice for him to enjoy playing with his ball, it’s important to make sure that he’s having other forms of exercise too! He walks well on the lead, and has good recall.. according to the person who has been caring for him.As Orson is a Border Collie; he’s a clever dog with lots of energy! He will need a home that can meet his needs both physically and mentally.

Penny, a 2 years old female Whippet available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Penny

Derbyshire
SexFemale
Age2 years
BreedWhippet

Penny is a lovely girl who came to us for rehoming due to her previous owner not being able to cope with her – they’d only had her for a few weeks, after finding her advertised online as a Whippet, and during that time she has gained weight and been seen by the vet – it looks like her underweight condition is down to not being fed correctly in her first home!Penny is a lovely natured dog – she’s very friendly and sociable with people, and loves company. She is also okay with other dogs, but is quite intent on playing!Penny does suffer with some separation anxiety… and will vocalise when she’s left. Her ideal home would be with people who are around a lot to keep her company, as well as building her confidence to be left alone for short periods. She may also benefit from living with another dog (depending on a dog meeting). She’s unable to live with cats. She enjoys getting out and about on her walks, particularly enjoying her time off lead in our secure paddocks… however, she does also love to snuggle up in her bed with her PJs on, on chilly days!Obviously Penny needs to gain some weight, and we are feeding her regular small meals to increase her calorie intake.
