About Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Ashbourne Animal Welfare was established in 1988 after a group of local animal lovers came together to form a dedicated rescue organisation for animals in need. Initially relying on foster homes, fundraising events, and community support, the charity steadily grew as more animals required care. In 2001, Ashbourne Animal Welfare realised its long-term ambition of opening a purpose-built rescue and rehoming centre known as The Ark, providing improved facilities for cats and dogs. Today, the charity has a strong local supporter base and a long track record of rescuing, caring for, and rehoming thousands of animals, all driven by a continued commitment to welfare, compassion, and community involvement.

Bear, a 1 year old male Labrador available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Bear

Derbyshire
SexMale
Age1 year
BreedLabrador

Bear is a lovely young lad who came to us for rehoming due to being part of an unplanned litter that didn’t find a home, he came in with his Brother, Joey. He’s a mix of breeds… his Mum is a Labrador/Husky mix, and his Dad is a medium sized foreign rescue. He is slightly bigger than Joey.Unfortunately Bear hasn’t ever been walked so hasn’t had any socialisation with dogs, apart from the several dogs in his previous home… he can be vocal when he see’s another dog out on walks, but we feel that this is simply that he doesn’t know how to react. We are confident that with a routine, regular outings and plenty of training he will make a fantastic companion! He’s clever and seems keen to please.Bear is very affectionate with people, he gets very excited – a typical puppy! He loves a cuddle! He has lived with children and could go to a new home with children over 5yrs.Bear is still very much a puppy… and has received very little training. He will be good fun, but will also need a fair amount of work with his training and socialisation. He has always had other dogs for company when left, so time alone would need to be built up gradually.

Bella, a 4 years old female English Springer Spaniel available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Bella

Derbyshire
SexFemale
Age4 years
BreedEnglish Springer Spaniel

Bella is a lovely Springer Spaniel who came to us for rehoming as a failed gundog – she was scared of gunshot and other bangs. She has been trained and will be a great addition to a pet home. She’s a super dog – very friendly, loving and is keen to please! She would be fine in a home with children over 5yrs. She loves people and is always excited to see visitors to the kennels – she is used to being left alone, but was in a kennel with other dogs around.Bella is fine with other dogs, and could possibly share her home with another dog – but any existing dog would need to be neutered. She’s not yet been cat tested.Bella walks well on the lead, and has good recall once she knows you. She’s a great dog with lots of potential. As she’s a Springer, she has a lot of energy and will require plenty of exercise – she would be a great walking companion. She loves to retrieve. As Bella has lived in a kennel (both with us, and in her previous home) she wont be house trained, so this will need working on once she is in the home.

Buzz, a 9 months old male Belgian Malinois available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Buzz

Derbyshire
SexMale
Age9 months
BreedBelgian Malinois

Buzz is a handsome young lad who’s not had the best start in life, it appears that he’s had a couple of homes at least in his short life, and latterly he was being neglected outside to ‘train him to be a guard dog’ apparently! Thankfully a family member stepped in, and he came to us to find a loving new home.Buzz is a Belgian Malinois crossbreed (we suspect the cross could be a Collie, but we’re not sure). He’s high energy, intelligent and full of character! He will need an understanding, knowledgeable home… he wouldn’t be suitable for a first time dog owner.Buzz is friendly with people, but can be cautious of some new people initially… he’s still a big puppy, and we are working on his socialisation here; this would need to continue in his new home. He really has improved massively during his time with us – we are confident that this will only continue. Buzz has never really been around children, and we think that he would be better in a home without young children at the moment. Once he gets over his initial caution… he’s a big softy! He loves a cuddle and is really responsive, he’s a happy boy who loves to get out for his walks, and he particularly enjoys his time in our exercise compounds, playing with his toys.He can be vocal at other dogs when out on walks, however we have let him meet several of our other youngsters and he’s been fine with them – he’s over the top and boisterous, but just wants to play and have a good game! He may be able to share his home with a female companion of a similar size (any existing dogs would need to be neutered).Buzz has had very little training, and will need a new family who can dedicate time to his ongoing training and socialisation. Buzz is reactive to traffic, and can get quite worked up when vehicles pass him on his walks (even at a distance) – he will need some work on desensitisation and positive reinforcement around traffic. He does seem a really bright boy, who will excel in the right home! Not only will Buzz need lots of physical exercise, he will need mental stimulation too to prevent him from becoming bored.

Cali, a 4 years old female Siberian Husky available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Cali

Derbyshire
SexFemale
Age4 years
BreedSiberian Husky

Cali is a young Husky crossbreed who originally came to us through no fault of her own… she came to us with her Sister, Who has since been rehomed. Sadly their owner realised that they had bitten off more than they could chew by taking on the Sisters as puppies, as well as already having 2 existing dogs and 3 cats in the home. Sadly Cali wasn’t receiving the time and attention that she needed and was spending a lot of the time in the kitchen – now that Cali had matured, she had taken a bit of a dislike to one of the smaller dogs and the cats.Cali is generally a friendly, sociable girl but can be a little wary of some new people initially… however once she knows you, she is your best friend! She’s always super excited to greet the staff and volunteers when they arrive! She’s a real cuddler! She’s definitely a favourite with some of the volunteers and even benefits from occasional outings to go and explore – where she has been impeccably behaved!Since she has been with us, we have worked on her training and she will now walk nicely on a lead wearing her head collar. She does seem quite clever, and keen to please…so continued training would be beneficial. She will need somebody with a lot of time to dedicate to her. Her time alone will need to be built up, as she’s always had company. She’s affectionate, and ‘smiles’ at people to say hello! We did rehome Cali but sadly she was returned. Cali has been known to display jealous and/or possessive tendencies around ‘her people’ which is why we think she would be suited to somebody who lives alone and can work with her one on one. We also believe that Cali would need to be the only pet in the home.

Coapy, a 7 years old male Border Collie x Large Munsterlander available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Coapy

Derbyshire
SexMale
Age7 years
BreedBorder Collie x Large Munsterlander

Coapy is a handsome fella who came to us for rehoming due to a house move. He’s a Border Collie x Munsterlander… meaning he is intelligent and energetic! He will need an active home who can give him the time he deserves.Prior to coming to us, Coapy wasn’t walked much, which is a shame as he loves his walks with us and particularly enjoys his time in our exercise paddocks! He would love a home where he can get plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to keep him busy. It was reported that Coapy was reactive to cars when out on walks – whilst we haven’t seen any signs of this whilst he’d been in out care, it is something that his adopters would need to be aware of. He is strong to walk, and will need further training.Coapy seems to be good with other dogs, and has lived with cats in his previous home.. so may be able to share his home with other pets again. He has lived with children, and could live with children again (8yrs and over). His previous owner reported that Coapy did have some separation anxiety, so he would be better in a home where he wont be left for long periods… he would need further work to help him to feel comfortable being left alone. We did rehome Coapy, but sadly it didn’t work out for a couple of reasons – mainly his anxiety when out on walks, causing him to be very pully and not focus on anything. But separation anxiety was also a problem too. He did share the home with several cats and another dog that he was fine with.

Dream, a 5 years old female Greyhound available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Dream

Derbyshire
SexFemale
Age5 years
BreedGreyhound

Dream is a lovely Greyhound who came to us for rehoming after she retired from racing. She’s a friendly girl, who seems to really enjoys being around people… however she can be a little timid when she meets people who she doesn’t know.Dream walks nicely on the lead, but can be a little ‘bossy’ with other Greyhounds..! She has shared her kennel before coming to us, and may be able to live with a quiet, good natured male – but this would depend on a dog meeting. She can be reactive to smaller dogs, and isn’t cat friendly. She would benefit from a quiet home with a nice garden where she can laze around and play with her toys – she seems to really enjoy soft toys. Due to her desire to chase, she would need to be kept on lead during her walks… with the use of her garden or secure exercise paddocks for her to stretch her legs!Dream was adopted, but unfortunately got returned due to her displaying a behaviour in the home that her adopter was comfortable with. Dream growled when she was woken up, and for this reason she will need a home without children.

Grendel, a 5 years old male Terrier available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Grendel

Derbyshire
SexMale
Age5 years
BreedTerrier

Grendel is a handsome little Plummer Terrier who came to us for rehoming due to his original owner passing away, and the person who took him on couldn’t cope with him. He’s a lovely little lad, very friendly with a great character! He’s very sociable with people and loves attention… he has been around children and would be a great little companion! He is used to having a lot of company.Grendel can be reactive to other dogs – he would need to be the only dog in the home. He is also be unsuitable to live with cats and other small furries. He has also killed poultry – and scaled a 5ft wall to get to the neighbours poultry too! Any garden would need to be very secure – so he can happily play ball! he loves to play!He isn’t a dog that can be let off lead whilst on walks due to his desire to go off and chase things! He has also got history of taking himself off for several days! A person familiar with terriers would be ideal.

Jessie, a 6 years old female Lurcher available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Jessie

Derbyshire
SexFemale
Age6 years
BreedLurcher

Jessie is a nice Lurcher who came to us for rehoming through no fault of her own – the family got her via a private rehome, but a child in the home wasn’t comfortable around her.Jessie is a nice natured, and seems to be pretty relaxed. She settles in her bed (in true lurcher style), but also enjoys getting out and about on her walks – she particularly enjoys her time off lead in our exercise compounds, playing ball! She loves a tennis ball and would happily chase it all day!!She seems to be happy around most of the other dogs here on her walks. Apparently the previous owner tried to rehome her privately but her and the other female dog in the home didn’t get along too well. She may be better as an only dog, or in a home with a calm castrated male for company. She’s not sociable with cats.Jessie has lived with children, and was friendly – she could go to live in a family home again with children over 5yrs… but any children in the home would need to be used to dogs.

Joey, a 1 year old male Labrador available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

BreedLabrador

Joey is a lovely young lad who came to us for rehoming due to being part of an unplanned litter that didn’t find a home, he came in with his Brother, Bear. He’s a mix of breeds… his Mum is a Labrador/Husky mix, and his Dad is a medium sized foreign rescue. He is slightly smaller than Bear.Unfortunately Joey had never been walked so didn’t have any socialisation with dogs, apart from the several dogs in his previous home… he can be vocal when he see’s another dog out on walks, but we feel that this is simply that he doesn’t know how to react – we have introduced him to several dogs here in our care and he has been find after the initial vocalisation. We are confident that with a routine, regular outings and plenty of training he will make a fantastic companion! He’s clever and seems keen to please.Joey is very affectionate with people, he gets very excited – a typical puppy! He loves a cuddle! He has lived with children and could go to a new home with children over 5yrs.Joey is still very much a puppy in his brain… he’s hadn’t had any training, but we have started to teach him the basics! He will be good fun, but will also need a fair amount of work with his training and socialisation.Joey did find a home, but sadly he was returned after 3wks, due to his separation anxiety in the home. He found it difficult to settle without all of ‘his people’ present, and if left alone he would continually jump up at the doors/windows. He will need a home where people are around majority of the time, and he may be better living with another dog for company – but this would depend on a dog meeting.

Logan, a 4 years old male Pointer available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Logan

Derbyshire
SexMale
Age4 years
BreedPointer

Logan is a very handsome English Pointer who originally came to us for rehoming due to his previous owners not being able to meet his needs – he wasn’t getting walked regularly etc. We did rehome him, but sadly he has been returned due to the adopters (and their older dog) not being able to cope with his energy levels.Logan is a typical young Pointer – he loves to get out and about on his walks… particularly racing around in our exercise compounds! Although his recall does need a little more work!! He does have the desire to chase birds etc, so he would need a home without other pets/poultry!Logan has been around children, and never been an issue… he could live with children over 5yrs; but any children in the home would need to be dog-savvy as he can be quite boisterous. He’s okay with other dogs and could possibly share his home with a canine companion depending on a dog meeting. He would chase cats.He has had some basic training, but would definitely benefit from some further education as well as a little more socialisation. He would be great in an active home with people who understand his breeds needs.Logans previous adopters said that he was a loving boy, but lacked boundaries. He’s full of energy and needs a home that can keep up with him! He has been used to long walks, and has been off of the lead – however he does run and run until he’s out of sight, so this would need more work. He can be destructive with objects, like cushions and things that he considers to be toys… but has always been fine with furniture. He has been left for up to 4hrs, with no issues.

Loki, a 5 years old male Labrador x Presa Canario available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Loki

Derbyshire
SexMale
Age5 years
BreedLabrador x Presa Canario

Loki came to us for rehoming due to the landlord not allowing him to stay with his previous owner. They had got him as a private rehome a few months before. He’s a Labrador X Presa Canario, so he’s a big lad (37kg) and he can be strong and pully when he wants to be! He’s a friendly boy once he knows you… but he can be a little wary of strangers initially – however it doesn’t take him long to feel comfortable (especially with some snacks!). He has lived with older children, 12yrs+Loki has lived with lots of other dogs in a previous home, and is generally okay with dogs when out, as long as they’re okay with him. He’s not yet been cat tested, but he has been around horses in his previous home. He’s been ok being left for a few hours, and has been crate trained – although the crate would need to be pretty big! He has received some training, and seems keen to please! He loves his walks, and has also been a running companion too! He really enjoys his time off lead with his toys in our exercise compound.Loki would benefit from a home that’s familiar with large dogs, who will let him settle in his own time. We are confident that he will be a great companion once he is settled into a new routine with a new family.

Loki, a 1 year old male Siberian Husky available for adoption from Ashbourne Animal Welfare in Derbyshire

Ashbourne Animal Welfare

Loki

Derbyshire
SexMale
Age1 year
BreedSiberian Husky

Loki is a very handsome Husky who came to us for rehoming through no fault of his own… sadly since getting him as a puppy, his previous owners circumstances changed meaning that Loki was being left alone for up to 12hrs a day! Unfortunately the cartoons on the TV weren’t cutting it, so he became destructive and vocal.Loki is very friendly and affectionate with people… he loves life and likes to be on the go! He’s sociable with everybody he meets and has spent time with children – he can be boisterous though, so any children in the new home would need to be used to dogs.He seems friendly with other dogs – although he is vocal when he sees other dogs on his walks, we believe this is excitement and he’s desperate to go and say hi! He could share his home with a spayed female companion, this would depend on a dog meeting. Loki will chase cats and other small animals, so will need a home without any of these! As he’s a Husky, Loki will need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation… he’s a breed that was designed for working, so he’s not going to be a couch potato content with a quick walk around the block! His recall is poor (typical for a Husky), so off lead time would need to be in a secure garden or a secure dog exercise paddock.Obviously he isn’t a fan of being left alone, although his previous owner reported that he was good at being left for 3hrs initially. We would recommend time alone being built up over time, so he see’s it as a positive experience.
