About Ferne Animal Sanctuary

Ferne Animal Sanctuary was founded in 1939 by the late Nina, Duchess of Hamilton & Brandon, to provide refuge for pets belonging to men and women leaving for war. Based on the Ferne Estate in Wiltshire, the sanctuary also cared for animals rescued from London and other southern cities during wartime. Following the Duchess’s death in 1951, leadership continued and the charity formally registered in 1965 (charity no. 1164350). Today, Ferne’s work continues in the same spirit of compassion, offering care and sanctuary to animals in need.

Bailey

Somerset
SexMale
Age10 years
BreedSiberian Husky x German Shepherd

He lost his owner… and now he’s lost his home too. Bailey didn’t do anything wrong. The only thing that changed was that the person he loved sadly passed away. Now this older boy is in rescue, confused and waiting for someone who isn’t coming back. Bailey is a lovely, gentle soul who still has so much love left to give. He’s friendly with other medium/large dogs off lead but can be reactive to smaller dogs on lead/off lead, Bailey is house trained, walks beautifully on a loose lead, loves water, loves being groomed, travels well, and is used to being left for a few hours. He’s also been socialised with children aged 10+. He will chase cats and doesn’t have recall off lead, but what Bailey truly needs right now is simple — a safe home, a soft bed, and someone to love him again. He’s already lost everything once. Please don’t let him spend the rest of his days waiting in a kennel. Can you give Bailey the loving home he deserves for his golden years? Please apply online if you can help. Bear

Somerset

Age3 years
BreedJack Russell Terrier

Meet Bear Bear is a handsome little terrier who came to Ferne after the sad passing of his previous owner. He is now looking for a loving new home where he can thrive. Bear is a lively and affectionate dog with plenty of character. He loves playing fetch, walks nicely on a loose lead, travels well, and is house-trained. He is also comfortable being left alone for short periods of around 2–3 hours. Bear can be excitable when meeting other dogs while on the lead and may react enthusiastically, so his recall training will need some continued work. He also has a strong instinct to chase cats, meaning a cat-free home is essential. Off lead, however, he is friendly and enjoys the company of other dogs. Bear could live with sensible older children aged 13 and above, subject to careful introductions. If you think you could offer this charming, energetic terrier the loving home he deserves, please apply online. Bear can’t wait to meet his new family! ️ Read more & enquire Temperament: Lively, friendly. Weight: 9KG.

Hank, a 3 years old male Mastiff available for adoption from Ferne Animal Sanctuary in Somerset

Ferne Animal Sanctuary

Hank

Somerset
SexMale
Age3 years
BreedMastiff

Meet Hank Hank came into Ferne as a stray and, after spending time in foster care, is now ready to find his forever home. He has been affectionately nicknamed ‘Doofy’ by his carers which is a bit of a reflection of his personality! He is a big bundle of fun who has zero concept of his own size. He’s a big, handsome boy with lots of energy and strength. Hank is very strong on the lead, so he’ll need ongoing training in his new home, especially with lead manners and recall when off lead. He will come with behavioural support while he is still learning. While he can be boisterous and pull towards other dogs when on the lead, he has shown himself to be friendly with some dogs when off lead, any introductions would need to be done carefully. He has been working well with a behaviourist and his fosterer on being able to pass other dogs and ignore them, this will need to be continued. Hank has great capacity for learning and enjoys the training. He even spent a week being a teaching dog for a group of dog trainer students here at the Sanctuary Hank will need an experienced, large breed owner who is committed to continuing to work on his training. Ideally he would suit being in a quieter location with less distractions to help him focus and progress with his life skills. Hank does have a strong prey drive and will chase cats, so he’ll need a cat-free home. The good news is that Hank is house trained, comfortable being left alone for 2–3 hours. Hank is happy to hop into a car but does get travel sick, He could live with older teenagers (13+) following careful introductions. This is due to his sheer size and enthusiasm! If you think you could offer Hank the home he deserves, please apply online — he can’t wait to meet you! Read more & enquire Temperament: boisterous, friendly. Weight: 53KG.

Manny, a 4 years old male Belgian Malinois available for adoption from Ferne Animal Sanctuary in Somerset

Manny

Somerset
SexMale
Age4 years
BreedBelgian Malinois

Manny This handsome boy hasn’t had the easiest start in life… found as a stray, with no one coming forward for him, Manny’s time sadly ran out at the pound. He was just hours away from being put to sleep — until a space opened up and he was saved at the very last moment. Now he’s safe… but what he truly needs is a place to finally call home. Manny is a sweet, affectionate dog who absolutely loves treats — and that makes him eager to learn! He’ll need some help with the basics like walking nicely on a lead, recall, and possibly house training. With patience, consistency, and lots of tasty rewards, he has so much potential to blossom. He travels well and enjoys the company of calm, friendly dogs when off lead. However, Manny does have a strong instinct to chase cats, so he’ll need a cat-free home. As we don’t know much about his past, any time left alone should be built up slowly and gently. Manny could live with children age 13 upwards after careful introductions. More than anything, Manny just needs someone to show him kindness, stability, and love — things he may never have truly known. He’s been given a second chance… now he just needs someone to take it with him. ️ If you can offer Manny the safe, loving home he deserves, please apply online. Shadow

Somerset
SexMale
Age7 years
BreedSaluki

Meet Shadow (aka Shadrack) Shadow is a big-hearted goofball looking for his forever home — one that’s adults-only and filled with patience, understanding, and love. This handsome sighthound came to us as a welfare case after living in a car, so the world is still a pretty new and sometimes overwhelming place for him. Because of this, Shadow needs someone who will take things slowly, helping him build confidence through calm, positive experiences and continued training. Shadow can get overexcited or bark in new situations — sometimes he just doesn’t quite know what to do with all his energy! But once you’ve earned his trust, you’ll find he’s incredibly funny, affectionate, and loyal. He’s the kind of dog who will keep you smiling every day. Shadow’s ideal home: Adults-only and in a quiet, rural area Patient owner willing to go at his pace No cats or small furries (he has a strong prey drive!) Best as the only dog in the home What Shadow loves: Playing with toys and having zoomies Walks on a loose lead Spending time with people he trusts Relaxing after a good play session Other notes: House trained Fine being left for 2–3 hours Playful with other dogs off-lead Whines a little when travelling but soon settles Shadow might take a little time to come out of his shell, but when he does, you’ll have a loyal, hilarious, and loving companion by your side.
