About Forever Hounds Trust

Forever Hounds Trust is a UK-based rescue charity dedicated to the welfare, rehabilitation, and rehoming of greyhounds, lurchers, and other sighthounds. Registered as a charity since 1996, the organisation operates from its centre near Cullompton in Devon, where dogs receive care in line with best-practice welfare standards before being matched with permanent, loving homes. Forever Hounds Trust also provides free, lifelong post-adoption behavioural support to help keep dogs successfully settled in their new homes. Supported by a small staff team, trustees, and a nationwide network of volunteers, the charity actively promotes improved sighthound welfare and advocates against practices that compromise the wellbeing of these breeds.

Alfie, a Unknown old male Lurcher available for adoption from Forever Hounds Trust in Devon

Alfie

Devon
SexMale
AgeUnknown
BreedLurcher

This dog is in the care of another rescue organisation – Forever Hounds Trust has agreed to share them on our website, in the hopes of getting them seen by our audience of sighthound lovers! When you apply for this dog, we will pass your details on to the other rescue, so that they can contact you.Alfie is an adult lurcher boy, looking for his forever home! He is not totally blind, but does have very limited eyesight. He is a gentle soul, who behaves beautifully in the home. Lounging and cuddles are the order of the day! He is house trained and enjoys sniffing around the garden. Alfie is very unsure of some dogs – possibly due to his homeless experience and his very limited sight. When out walking, he will react and bark; and not then move, without support and encouragement. But he has spent time with another dog in his foster house and garden and there no aggression – he is just over excited and does not have any doggy manners. This extends to bouncy play and mouthing, so we would recommend no small children. He can find his way around the house and garden quite readily, but close sight is very limited so he may miss hand signals, hands holding treats etc. He has been fully vet checked and apart from his eyesight he is a healthy adult dog.An owner/family who can provide the love and consistency that will enable Alfie to settle, decompress and reach his full potential – he is nearly there! An owner who is willing to support him manage his reactivity to dogs when out walking and socialising (his rescue will support this with a behaviourist as needed). An uncluttered home and garden where he can wander safely. An adult only home or older children. Someone who is home most of the time and/or can ensure he can be left safely on his own. Very secure and safe garden so he can explore independently. A resident calm and socially mature dog is a possibility and potentially a bonus.

Bear

Devon
SexMale
Age6 years
BreedLurcher

Beautiful Bear is a 6-year-old, medium-sized lurcher boy, looking for a new family due to a change in circumstances at home. He is a much-loved family member, but his current owner has reluctantly made the decision to rehome Bear, with his best interests in mind. Bear is an affectionate, loving and laid back boy. He loves to snooze for most of the day, although he does enjoy long walks and needs a decent amount of exercise. Bear is currently living with another dog and could share his home again, but his mum feels that if he had the choice, he would prefer to be the centre of attention in his new home! Bear may be able to live with older children, pending introductions. He is not cat friendly and has a high prey drive for wildlife too! Bear is sociable with most other dogs, and has loads of doggie friends of all shapes and sizes. He can be worried by some unfamiliar dogs and will bark defensively at them when feeling unsure. He walks beautifully on the lead, though he can be strong when he spots a cat! Bear travels well in the car, is housetrained and used to being left alone for up to 3 hours, though he would prefer not to be left on a very regular basis. He’s a really sweet boy, who is easy to fall in love with!Would prefer to be the only dog, but could live with the right dog (pending intros). May be able to live with kind, sensible, older children. Can be left for up to 3 hours (will need building up gradually in new home). A rural or semi-rural home would be ideal, or access to rural walking areas. A decent sized, secure garden. Needs a couple of hours exercise per day (ideally with access to safe areas for off-lead walks, or a secure field to hire nearby).

Charley

Devon
SexFemale
Age9 years
BreedLurcher

Charley is a sweet, small-medium sized lurcher girl. She’s 9 years old and is looking for a new home due to a change in circumstances in her current home, where she is a much-loved member of the family. Charley is a loving dog who bonds deeply with her family, and is very intelligent. She loves walking and playing with her tennis ball, but is also a typical couch potato lurcher, as long as her needs are being met. Charley is very friendly with women and although she needs a more gradual introduction to new men, it doesn’t take long to gain her trust. She is housetrained, well-behaved at home and can be left alone for a few hours. She travels well in the car, but can occasionally get sick on very long journeys. Charlie is nervous of unfamiliar dogs; whilst she can make friends with proper introductions, she can be defensive on walks if another dog enters her personal space. She is not severely reactive or difficult to manage, and tends to ignore dogs unless they get too close, but her adopter must be willing to support her and understand that there are some situations she finds challenging. Charlie would love to live in a quiet rural or semi-rural area, with a garden to play and relax in and plenty of love and attention from her new family.Would prefer to be the only dog, but may be able to live with the right dog pending introductions. May be able to live with teenagers, but would prefer a quiet, calm environment. Would prefer a rural or semi-rural home. Needs access to walking areas without too many other dogs (especially loose dogs). Can be left alone for around 4-6 hours, but this must be built up gradually in a new home.

Diesel

Devon

BreedLurcher

Diesel is a very bright and active 6-year-old lurcher boy, who has come into our care as he was very worried by the young child in his previous home. He’s a really affectionate and loving dog with adults, keen to snuggle on the sofa or lean in for fuss. He’s happy to accept visitors into his home and meet new people on walks. Diesel is very smart and picks up training easily! He enjoys spending time with his handler, has a excellent check in and loves to play. He’s house-trained and very well-behaved at home, but does thrive on human company and isn’t comfortable being left alone for long periods. Diesel can be anxious around unfamiliar dogs. He prefers to keep his distance and avoid conflict, but may react by lunging and barking if he feels threatened or overwhelmed. He can make friends with calm, polite dogs if given very gradual introductions, but is much more of a people-person!An adult only home, with no visiting children (or plans to have children in future!) To be the only dog Can manage 2-3 hours alone, but this will need building up again gradually Walks in areas without too many other dogs (especially off-lead dogs!)

Flo

Devon

Lovely Flo is a 5-year-old greyhound hoping to find her forever home. She can be a little quiet when first meeting new people but once she feels familiar her sweet, playful side shines through and she becomes a bouncy girl who adores fuss and playtime ! She may return to her initial shyness when settling into a home, so she’ll need patient adopters who can give her plenty of time and space to adjust at her own pace.Flo walks well alongside other greyhounds and similar-sized dogs, though being a naturally quiet and sensitive girl, she can feel a little anxious if they come into her personal space. She’s made great progress with smaller dogs since arriving with us, but they can still be a bit overwhelming for her so needs on-going management around smaller breeds. Flo would be happiest as the only dog in the home, with calm, understanding adopters who can offer her the gentle support and reassurance she needs.Would prefer not to be left alone for long periods. Needs active adopters who are looking for a playful girl Would prefer not to be left alone for long periods & needs a gradual introduction to home life. Flo will need to be the only dog in the home and would benefit from quieter walking areas where she won’t have off-lead dogs running up to her.

Ritchie

Devon
SexMale
Age8 years
BreedGreyhound

Handsome Ritchie is a gentle soul, searching for a kind-hearted human to call his own. He is a very social boy with other greyhounds and has even been well-mannered around other breeds (but that is something he is still learning about). Ritchie absolutely loves travelling and will happily jump into the van before settling down for a snooze. He especially enjoys gentle countryside walks where he can take his time sniffing and relaxing.Like many greyhounds, Ritchie can feel worried in busier environments, particularly if there are lots of off-lead dogs around him. Because of this, he will need kind and patient adopters who are happy to introduce him gradually to the bigger world, helping him build confidence at a pace that feels comfortable for him.Ritchie will make a wonderfully rewarding companion, and the love and kindness he receives from his people will certainly be returned tenfold!Would prefer not to be left alone for long periods & needs a gradual introduction to home life Could live with another hound, or as an only dog in a quiet home with walks that avoid busy parks Best suited to calm, understanding humans who will give him time and reassurance when he feels worried
