About German Shepherd Dog Rescue

German Shepherd Dog Rescue (GSDR) is a volunteer-run charity founded in 2001 and granted charitable status in 2011, dedicated to rescuing, fostering, and rehoming German Shepherd Dogs and related large shepherd breeds. Operating across England and Wales, the organisation carefully assesses each dog and matches them to suitable adopters, providing ongoing advice and support to ensure lasting placements. Without its own kennels, GSDR relies on foster homes and boarding facilities, with kennelling costs forming its largest expense. Rehoming 200–300 dogs each year, the charity aims to establish its own dedicated facility to better support urgent and complex cases.

Alfred and Joker, 4 year old brothers, have had a really tough start to the year. Sadly their owner died and they were taken in temporarily by his son, who lived on a caravan site and already had two large dogs of his own.We have seen videos of the boys separately walking with one of the sons dogs however we are currently unsure to what extent Alfred and Joker had already mixed with the son and his dogs and what environment they had previously lived in. We would advise caution and gradual introduction as we do know that despite several rescues and FB sites supporting the carer with food, vaccinations etc and appealing for someone to offer a large dog experienced foster home or kennels place over a number of weeks nobody had been able or willing to do so prior to GSDR stepping up to save these boys from euthanasia. When four large dogs proved too much for the sons neighbours and landlord he was evicted from the site and, with literally nowhere left to go, the devastated son felt he now had no other option left than to call the vets. Alfred and Joker were at very serious risk of being put to sleep the following day.As an emergency measure they were signed over to a local sanctuary, but one who don’t generally rehome such large dogs and we’re therefore only able to offer them an overnightassessment and subsequently a very temporary kennel space.Fortunately, as a final appeal was issued to various Gsd rescues, GSDR and a few volunteers became aware of the urgent need to bring breed experienced help to these boys and were within hours able to respond with an offer of the rescues support and a foster home.We are told that, in a secure field Alfred enjoyed chasing a ball but Joker had little interest in this and just did his own thing. After so much upheaval the boys were a little unsure of being brought out to meet yet another stranger and we’re not entirely welcoming to him, but nevertheless into the car they went. They travelled without issue but we’re then even less happy to see a border collie dog at the other end of their journey and took to guarding the car and home at any sight or sound. Based on what we do know so far of their past environment, and observing them over the following days, our volunteer believes that they may well have been used to guarding a yard / site in the past, as even he was unable to get up to the toilet in the nightwithout setting them off barking. This behaviour did however stop after just 3 days of patience and effort to gain their trust when the boys, laid quietly opposite him, suddenly decided that our volunteer required an immediate greet and lick, and have sought to be firm pals in the following four days since. As yet the three dogs have still not been mixed properly but Alfred and Joker are gradually becoming a little quicker torespond to their fosterer in varied scenarios and did for the first time yesterday stop barking at the sight of them passing by andthen standing still in their sight, some calming signals were then observed between all 3 dogs. Alfred and Joker may occasionally give a minor grumble to each other, EG if coming face to face in a small space, competing for a place nearest food etc but have shown no aggression to each other. If anything they are happy to lay all over each other. They have also seen people, a passing cat and various dogs, sheep, again initially barking robustly at them, bar the young cat and a young Labrador pup ahead, in a generally successful attempt to deter all comers. Alfred in particular seems very interested in ducks and geese in the fields, but whilst wanting to watch and pull towards them, unusually for him, did not bark. This barking behaviour has however largely reduced since taking to their fosterer. Both Alfred and Joker will counter surf given an opportunity, jump to try and eat from their dish before it hits the floor if not controlled, and seek to drink dry every puddle or bucket they may see. They are seemingly used to being on a settee when available.Interestingly they don’t necessarily bark on hearing other dogs, only when seeing them. It should be noted that if the boys were together they would both originally tend to bark very heavilyand seemingly have little training, save for perhaps having been deliberately taught to deter strangers, thus will require an experienced and determined home, willing to earn their trust, come what may. Separately Alfred would still bark, whilst Joker would become more inclined to ignore such distractions. Joker has however been observed as quite reliant on Alfred, initially running around looking for a means of getting back to him when taken out alone. For these reasons we are willing to consider splitting the boys if an experienced and committed home is available for each of them but it is vital that these boys are not let down or thrown into any uncertainty again. It may be that you will need to make a few visits and get to know them before they will trust you, or that a m

Arlo, a Unknown old male German Shepherd available for adoption from German Shepherd Dog Rescue in the UK

Arlo

BreedGerman Shepherd

Young Arlo is sadly looking for a new home due to a drastic change in his owners circumstances. He is very protective of his home and family. The volunteer couldn't interact with him inside of the home, as he doesn't like strangers coming in.He is said to be good with children but we feel due to his protectiveness we will only consider older large dog savvy children. He is a definite NO to cats and he is fine with certain dogsArlo has a dreadful recall so this is something that will need some work. He is lacking in basic socialisation so again work will be needed. He does have basic commands and is good in the home for his family. He asks to be let out by going to the door.He is NOT good at the vets so again work will be needed to make it less stressful for him. When the owners go away he goes into kennels where he is said to be good natured and friendly albeit a little anxious. This is a great positive for the right adopter. It is felt that Arlo missed out on his socialisation and proper training as a young pup which has resulted in him becoming overly protective of his family as he thinks that he is the boss. Outside of the home he is much less aggressive but is still nervous of sudden movements .The volunteer feels that he would benefit from a calm confident experienced home who can take him back to basics and deal with his protectiveness especially in the home. Given the right help he will most definitely become a very loyal and loveable companion.German Shepherd Rescue, Little Vauld, Marden Hereford HR1 3HA.German Shepherd Rescue helping rehome GSD's

Meet Arnie who is a caucasian shepherd.Arnie will be 8 in July and is not neutered. He is looking for a new home due to a marriage breakdown and is not getting the attention he needs.Arnie is an outdoor dog. He used to live indoors but chose to live outside. Some Caucasians prefer to be outdoors.Arnie would benefit from living in a rural home with a big garden with an outdoor kennel so he has shelter but giving him the option to go in the house if he wants to.He currently lives with children but we will only rehome him with older children.Arnie used to live with a rescued female caucasian shepherd but she picked on him so they had to rehome her. Arnie can be selective with dogs. He doesn’t like little dogs and doesn’t like cats.He dislikes birds and will bark and try to catch them. He is fine with the family’s pet rabbit and the hedgehog that visits at night.Arnie loves to be bathed and groomed. He loves his food and doesn’t mind anybody touching his food.Arnie occasionally takes a dislike to men. He has never bitten but there has been a time when workman have been at the house and Arnie was very unhappy about it and had to be kept away.Arnie was fine with our volunteer’s partner and he rolled over for belly rubs.Arnie is a very laid back boy. He can be stubborn and knows a few commands in Ukranian. He walks well on the lead but can be reactive with some dogs. He will bark and lunge and with his size, will be very difficult to control. He weighs about 90kg and he is only being walked by an adult male in the family. He’s not let off the lead because he hasn’t got great recall. He travels well in the car and used to go on camping holidays in Wales and Cornwall.German Shepherd Rescue, Little Vauld, Marden Hereford HR1 3HA.German Shepherd Rescue helping rehome GSD's

** Desperate for Foster/Home **Aslan, is 5 year old and a gorgeous chunky boy.Sadly he is looking for a new home due to recently losing his mum and his dad needs to get back to work as at present he is looking after Aslan. Our volunteer went to meet him and took him out for a walk this is what he had to say.Aslan is a big dog, approx 50 kg. He’s very loving and no problem being stroked, happily took treats from me. Owner has done quite a lot of training with him as when they got him 2 years ago he did suffer from SA. He is much better now and does settle. Aslan walks well on the lead and doesn’t really pull, he tends to walk at the end of the lead but no pulling. He tends to ignore other dogs and has low level of interest in them especially small to medium dogs. He has more interest in large dogs and can react to them if they are reactive to him first.Aslan is very intelligent and listens well to his owner/handler. He’s a lovely dog who maybe unsure at first in a new home but should grow to be a loyal and loving family member.German Shepherd Rescue, Little Vauld, Marden Hereford HR1 3HA.German Shepherd Rescue helping rehome GSD's

VERY URGENT APPEAL FOR BLAZE. 19 MONTHS IN STRAY KENNELS AND DESPERATE FOR A HOME.Blaze is one adorable, affectionate and friendly German Shepherd. He craves, love and attention and we desperately would love to find him a forever home.Blaze is now eight years old and has been left waiting for nineteen long months in stray kennels and isolation. An endured loneliness has been his life for such a long time. Blaze has been a lonely boy for so long and was the last dog to be moved on the eleventh hour from the Yorkshire kennels that is now closed.Blaze is playful and adores ball games and is loyal and so eager to please. He has so much love to give to anyone human and he will need a home with lots of company that are dedicated to his needs. This boy loves people and is now so happy to be walking with us on the Pennine trail. He has some arthritis his front shoulder so pain relief is now give as and when. We are well aware Blaze is not a fan of other dogs however he is more focused on being with people than anything else when he is chasing a ball. In the right home we feel Blaze will blossom as he has made amazing progress in our care. We have worked on moving forward with his reactivity however his behaviour with other dogs may always need to be managed well by his adopter.Blaze is now embarking on a new lease of life with us and we are hoping to turn many corners and enhance his life in every way possible. At the eleventh hour Blaze was the last dog to come into rescue care and we feel blessed that he has the chance of a new life. Blaze has been health checked by our vets and has passed with flying colours despite some recent arthritis diagnosis. He was the perfect gentleman when examined and being prodded and poked. He is loving life at the kennels and is in heaven chasing a ball and having a love from the girls. Blaze is doing so well and we are aiming very high to find him a new start as soon as possible. This beautiful boy is very loving and friendly despite such a sad isolation at the stray kennels. His life has been turbulent for a long time and we are now desperately to find him one very special rescue adopter.BLAZE NEVER RECEIVES ANY INTEREST. Please read on to see what sort of home Blaze needs. A FOSTER HOME IN YORKSHIRE AND SURROUNDING COUNTIES WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR BLAZE. THIS IS OUR URGENT APPEAL. GERMAN SHEPHERD FANS PLEASE CONSIDER THIS AMAZING DESERVING DOG.?THE HOME THIS ADORABLE AND DESERVING DOG NEEDSBlaze needs a special home. Above all else he needs TLC and love and lots of company. A home that is not too busy would be amazing and preferably with adults or older children only. A home that love and can offer walks and also have an enclosed garden is crucial.Blaze will bounce into life once in a home with company and luxuries and his toys. He is a real character and loves to carry sticks and balls. We feel he needs a home with patience and someone that can offer time for him to decompress. He has been through a turbulent and difficult seventeen months. A less busy home would be ideal for Blaze so he has time to desensitise and recover from his ordeal of being in isolation in kennels for such a long time.Blaze will need to be an only dog as he can be reactive despite making excellent progress with us. This boy has turned many corners since coming into our care and we are working very hard to support him and build up to slow introductions on walks with our other well mannered ladies. A home with adult children or adults only would be a must have and essentially a home with company.Blaze has so much love to give and we welcome visits from rescue supporters. Regular visits from potential adopters are always welcome.German Shepherd Rescue, Little Vauld, Marden Hereford HR1 3HA.German Shepherd Rescue helping rehome GSD's

Cooper is a handsome 3 year old unclaimed stray who is now looking for a fresh start and a loving forever home. Despite finding himself in kennels through no fault of his own, Cooper has shown himself to be a bright, friendly boy with lots of potential. He is entire, microchipped, and vaccinated. He behaves very well at the vetsCooper has recently enjoyed a walk with volunteer Dave and his dog Kelly, and he did really well. He was calm and happy in Kelly’s company, showing that he has the potential to socialise nicely with other dogs when introductions are done properly. As a young dog who hasn’t had any formal training, Cooper can pull on the lead and will need a home committed to continuing his training and helping him learn good manners. We would only consider rehoming Cooper to a home with older children.Cooper is currently in kennels and would love nothing more than to swap kennel life for a cosy bed, regular walks, and a family to call his own.German Shepherd Rescue, Little Vauld, Marden Hereford HR1 3HA.German Shepherd Rescue helping rehome GSD's

Update: May 2019 - Deacon is now under our care and although still living in a kennel and run, his life has improved tenfold. He’s such a lovely friendly lad with people, he clearly has not had much exposure to dogs and the outside world. He has been off lead with a few dogs, but will at points just have a pop.Deacon needs someone who has the time to start lead training, he is reactive when on lead so needs to learn that he is safe and nothing going to get him.URGENT: Deacon needs to find a home urgently, he is living outside and is getting stones thrown at him by children which is winding him up and making him howl and bark.He is living in far from ideal conditions and when our assessor met him Deacon just wanted some affection. He feels that Deacon will be very excitable with human contact and does jump up and piddle when overexcited.Other than that he was over friendly, he needs training and it probably won't take too much for him to become a wonderful family pet.On lead, he will demonstrate over excited pulling which is understandable. He also likes to carry his lead in his mouth. As he has no history with children we will be looking at an adult home for him.German Shepherd Rescue, Little Vauld, Marden Hereford HR1 3HA.German Shepherd Rescue helping rehome GSD's

Dita has been in long-term fostercare for 3 years. Her current fosterer’s deteriorating mobility prevents addressing her issues, because of which it is urgent that we find a new foster or permanent home as soon as possible.Dita came to us from Serbia, where she had not got off to a good start. Initially, when she came into foster care she was a bundle of nerves and would wet herself at the drop of a hat. However, she soon started to settle down and has lived with two male dogs without incident. She now loves everyone she meets and is very affectionate, but still does not like other dogs until she gets to know them; initially, she will adopt “fight” rather than “flight” mode and, therefore, needs careful introduction. She is not suitable for a working family. We are confident that, in the right hands, she will learn to walk without pulling and can be socialised with other dogs. She loves her food and is happy to eat whatever food she is given. She used to be a ‘counter-surfer’ and would steal food, but she no longer does this. She does not climb on furniture and has always been clean in the house. She knows basic commands like “sit, come, down, leave”.A very bright dog, she learns quickly and has recently started scent work, which she loves and is good at.Dita came to us from Serbia, where she had not got off to a good start.
