About German Shepherd Rescue Elite

German Shepherd Rescue Elite was established to support unwanted, abandoned, and neglected German Shepherds, while also educating the public about the responsibilities of owning large working-breed dogs. The charity focuses not only on rescue and rehoming, but on prevention—offering advice and guidance to help reduce the number of dogs entering rescue in the future. GSRE works tirelessly to ensure dogs are microchipped, vaccinated, and neutered, with dedicated follow-up support where needed. Supported by a passionate volunteer network, the charity also assists Belgian Shepherd Malinois and Dutch Shepherds, breeds whose complex needs are often misunderstood. As a full member of the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes (ADCH) and the EU Dog and Cat Alliance, GSRE is committed to collaboration and the highest standards of animal welfare.

Alfie, a 7 years old male German Shepherd available for adoption from German Shepherd Rescue Elite in Nottinghamshire

German Shepherd Rescue Elite

Alfie

Nottinghamshire
SexMale
Age7 years
BreedGerman Shepherd

Please meet Alfie who is already a hit with all the volunteers. Our Alf is fully vaccinated and chipped, now just needs neutering as soon as we can get him into a foster place. This boy is so polite, he is very calm in the kennel environment and also while out walking, although he can be very strong on the lead when walking alongside the other dogs.He has met quite a few people since he arrived from the stray pound and he has been ok with everyone.Alfie enjoys his walks and doesn’t really interact with the other dogs, no aggression he just prefers human company and will need to be the only dog in the home.He did have a short spell in a home. He did attach himself to one person more than the other and then tried to dominate the weaker person which caused problems and Alfie was returned to kennels. He will need stronger leadership next time and a couple who will work together in putting rules and guidelines in place so everyone knows exactly where they stand. It really isn’t hard to follow.Alfie is a very good boy when taking treats, he kindly offers his paw and takes the treat so gently. We have seen no issues around food other than the fact he is a very picky feeder and has lost some weight because of this. We have to watch his food intake and his tastes seem to change on a weekly basis. Currently he has a liking for Winalot pouches and will eat these happily so we give him a good supply. He also enjoys a hoof stuffed with raw and the odd pigs ear. He has recently shown some interest in toys which was great to watch, he did take a shine to one of the Kong balls with the handle another ball inside, he thought he had found some treasure.A no to cats and no history around children so teenagers only.If you are fully vetted by us and ready to roll speak to your area coordinator and pop along and visit me.

Anna, a 5 years old female German Shepherd available for adoption from German Shepherd Rescue Elite in Essex

German Shepherd Rescue Elite

Anna

Essex
SexFemale
Age5 years
BreedGerman Shepherd

“Hi Lizzy this is Anna I spoke to you yesterday about. Anna was born 31/12/21. She has ended up with us as she was being kept in a shed and was removed. She is a very sweet girl and has been fine with every one who has dealt with her . She is not used to other dogs but has the odd bark when going past something she hasn’t seen before then tends to ignore.she has formed a habit in the shed of holding her tail with her mouth, she does the same in the kennel, she has now made it sore so is on antibiotics & ant inflammatory for a week to see if that helps, if not she will need an X-ray to see if there is some kind of damage to her tail which has caused the habit. Amputation might be a possibility if there is a problem.”Anna is a lovely girl with people and so far pretty much ignoring the other dogs around her but happily plays with male dogs. Still has issues with her tail as it is obviously a long term behaviour which needs to be unlearnt but is better when with people or with her ball and has got much less over time.Anna is fully vaccinated and spayed and would be fine to live with older children. This lovely girl would benefit from a home where she has her people around most of the time so she doesn’t feel bored enough to chase her tail. It will take time and patience but this sweet girl needs to start living life after her horrible start.Anna had a week in foster last year where she settled really well considering. Unfortunately she had to come back because the resident cat was too stressed having a dog in the house.“We had the pleasure of fostering Anna, a beautiful 4 year old German Shepherd. She’s an incredibly sweet and affectionate girl who thrives on one-on-one attention and loves spending quality time with her humans. Whether it’s cuddling, playing with her toys, or enjoying her meals, Anna brings a gentle and loving energy to the home. She is very clean, housebroken, slept through the night along with being very respectful in our home.Anna does exhibit a spinning behavior, however, with the correct guidance and support this may calm down over time. Despite this challenge, her affectionate nature shines through, and she’s eager to connect with people. People just need to see through this as she would make a lovely family dog.On walks, Anna was great with people but will need slow, careful introductions to unfamiliar dogs. With patience and structure, she has the potential to build confidence in these situations.Anna is a truly special dog who deserves a home where she can continue to grow and feel safe. She’ll make a wonderful companion for someone willing to support her with kindness and consistency.”Anna then had a few months in foster with another couple who had adopted from us before:“We Fostered Anna from the end of November last year, until mid-March this year. All we knew was she was almost 4, had been rescued from a shed by the Police, had been with GSRE in kennels for over a year and had been out to Foster once, but returned after a week because their cat didn’t like her! We’ve had Shepherds since b4 we were married in 1483 and of them all, Anna is by far the most affectionate, kissy, loving and pretty cuddle monster we have EVER encountered. She readily jumps into and out of the car and travels well, settling down quite quickly – she had at least two, two hour journeys with us, without issue. She’s housetrained and can be left on her own (we left her for than 2 hours on one occasion and she simply settled down in our hallway – we have CCTV and checked). She LOVES toys and will systematically dissect anything less robust than a truck tyre or an original Kong within minutes! She is packed with fun, play and energy, LOVES water and will chase after a thrown ball (or anything else) and bring it back to be thrown again and again and again until YOU get tired! She really thrives on mental stimulation, but doesn’t chew the house to pieces and will settle down on her bed for a rest or to watch TV – I kid you not! That said, she also loves to snuggle up on her bed, or with her human or just take herself off to lay on our bed and have a snooze…….She snores!Anna settled, relaxed and grew in confidence over the weeks. Over this time, her tail chasing and biting behaviour slowly abated to almost nothing and her tail tip tail hair has grown back beautifully. However, occasional moments of anxiety did seem to trigger them still, or if she wanted attention but wasn’t getting it. Even then, a firm “NO” generally snapped her out of it.She was a nightmare on the lead to start with and any commands (sit, down, heel, etc) must always have been intended for someone other than Anna! However, with reward-based and CALMLY executed Training, she became good with the basic commands and vastly improved on a lead. She is not inherently treat orientated, so the training rewards do have to be high-value treats or toys – not her day-to-day food. She is HIGHLY intelligent and actually quite a sensiti

Arti, a 6 years old male Belgian Malinois available for adoption from German Shepherd Rescue Elite in Cheshire

Arti

Cheshire
SexMale
Age6 years
BreedBelgian Malinois

We were asked by a pound to take in this young lad whose time was up. Arti is a GSD cross Mali we believe. He is now microchipped we believe he is between 1 & 2 years old. Still entire and vaccinations to be restarted.Arti is a little nervous of new people but no malice in him. He loves toys and seems to be a typical energetic, young lad! No young children as we do not know his history. No reaction to other dogs at the kennels so far but further assessment here will be done.Arti will need an experienced home that can continue teaching him that people and the world are not as scary as he currently thinks.

Axel, a 6 years old male Belgian Malinois available for adoption from German Shepherd Rescue Elite in Essex

German Shepherd Rescue Elite

Axel

Essex
SexMale
Age6 years
BreedBelgian Malinois

“Axel, now what can I say about this gorgeous boy who is one massive overgrown pup who doesn’t realize his size most of the time. Axel does have nervous aggression meeting people due to his rubbish start in life but he is better meeting people off lead in the paddock, and it really doesn’t take him that long to get to know people. Axel loves the female dogs so a confident female or male dog in a home would be brilliant for this lad. This lad loves a game of football and just loves loves a cuddle and to play in a puddle.”Please meet Axel who was born 6.5.21 according to his microchip. He is vaccinated and now also neutered. We believe he is a Malinois cross GSD. We were asked to take Axel in from other kennels where he had been taken in by the police and this is what we were told:“I’ve received this message from my boss asking if you can help. This is a new dog that came in on Friday. Very nervous aggressive but actually quite sweet when he knows you but will definitely bark and in the wrong hands bite. But before he gets put down I just wanted to see if Lizzy would give him a chance but only if it’s not a problem for her. I feel a bit sorry for him only 6 months old and been in 3 or 4 homes already and deserves a chance. “How could we say no! Axel is quite full on, but he is settling in fine and really happy with the people he has met so far. Great toy drive and typically full on for his breed and age, but in the right hands, Axel will make a super dog.Axel is GREAT with ALL other animals and spent a time in foster on a small holding where he met horses, goats, chickens, goats, cats and other dogs of all shape and size. He was initially kenneled but was slowly brought into the house where he started to settle, but sadly has never had the opportunity of a long term home.A no to children because of his history and nervous aggression.Axel just needs that special home and in return you will get a super loyal dog.

“They are in kennels atm and police have had a verbal disclaimer. They are 2 females one is nearly 1 and the other is nearly 2. Could be mother and daughter or siblings. Police have no other info.Very sweet girls. On a 7 dayer atm.”So Bambi and Bonnie came from the Police DLO in Cornwall. Both girls have super friendly temperaments and get along together so well. However we are walking them separately as well as together so Bonnie learns to be confident away from her mum.No young children as we do not know their history but these girls would fit happily in a breed experienced home with little fuss.

Bear – Pearl Puppy, a 4 years old male Belgian Malinois available for adoption from German Shepherd Rescue Elite in Surrey

German Shepherd Rescue Elite

Bear – Pearl Puppy

Surrey
SexMale
Age4 years
BreedBelgian Malinois

This is Bear’s original write up:“Pearl was picked up as a stray in December and was heavily pregnant. No microchip and nobody to claim her, so we were asked if we could help. Pearl is quite nervous when meeting new people and we suspect she has had a good hiding at some stage, but once she realises you mean her no harm, she is a sweetheart. She likes her space from other dogs but no issues with them at all. Has totally ignored the horses in the field next door as well. On the 22nd December Pearl gave birth to 11 puppies, 4 boys and 7 girls. Sadly one little girl was not breathing and despite getting her started and suckling, she passed over Rainbow Bridge just over 24 hours later.Pearl is a GSD but not knowing what dad was we did a DNA sample on one of the girls which came back as: 56% GSD, 29% Belgian Mali, 7% Border Collie, and 6% Greyhound. The pups are all confident and tear around the place causing bedlam as you would expect. They do all like a snuggle though as well. The pups will need homes that have some experience of the main breed at least as they will need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation as they get older. “Bear came back at 11 months old quite simply the person who adopted him failed to give him the training, socialisation and boundaries he needed, so whereas all the other pups are super with people and other dogs, Bear still mouths, still jumps up, reacts to anything that moves when out on lead….To say he has been let down is an understatement. Did his adopter take him regularly to training like she said she would? No! Did she contact anyone to say she was having issues? No! The first we know about it is when he is snapping at the children when they take things off him and suddenly he has to go immediately otherwise she has booked an appointment at the vets to murder him because a volunteer said it may take a couple of weeks to find him somewhere. We don’t always get the homes right and most certainly did not in this case, but Bear is now safely back where he was born and settled straight back in. He will learn some of the manners he missed out on from the older dogs but there is no malice in this gorgeous lad, purely he is behaving as a young male pup would not having been given the proper direction.Bear definitely deserves a special home now please!

We were asked to take Ben in with another dog called Bill after the police seized for their sake. He is microchipped and fully vaccinated and now neutered.“Lovely affectionate boy loves playing ball and knows basic commands.”Since arriving with us Ben has been quite chilled with life and has loved everyone he has met. Been fine around the other dogs at the kennels but does not seem to like small dogs. Older children only as we do not know his full history. Can be protective when walking with women. He tries to act big and brave but is not completely confident bless him.Ben will need a home experienced with the breed that can give him the exercise and mental stimulation a dog of his age needs. A fun lad to have in your family but would need to be the only dog in the home as he can get jealous!

Bentley, a 5 years old male Belgian Malinois available for adoption from German Shepherd Rescue Elite in Essex

German Shepherd Rescue Elite

Bentley

Essex
SexMale
Age5 years
BreedBelgian Malinois

This was the first we knew about Bentley at 1 year of age:“Bentley has made a massive impression on kennel staff since he has been with us. He acts like a huge, tough, scary Malinois- however he has proven not to be. Throughout his stay he has proven to be a very anxious dog who is unsure or strangers and new environments. But through time and lots of treats he has gained trust in kennel staff. He is very reliant on the handler and will keep looking to ensure the person is still there. He does need a firm hand to ensure he doesn’t drag you around and try to be cheeky. He has proven to be what we call ‘the biggest wet wipe’ in the kennels- acting very tough until told a form ‘NO’ and he melts away- he really does not like being in trouble. He is a sweetheart really and is struggling in kennels- he is extremely stressed and will bark all day- to either get attention or to tell off his noisy neighbours next door. He is still a reactive boy but we can tell he doesn’t mean it as he clearly hasn’t seen much of the world and is very unsure of what is going on around him. It has taken time and patience, but Bentley has proven that he is handleable and is willing to learn as long as he trusts you and knows he is safe.”Bentley turned out to be a super lad, and pretty much as described. He is microchipped, fully vaccinated and not neutered. Bentley could go into a home with older children. He can be selective with dogs but a no to cats. With a home experienced with the breed he will be a super lad.Bentley was adopted last year but sadly needs a new home due to a relationship split meaning his mum is having to move and cannot take her dogs.Bentley was living another dog with no problem(female) and is fine with others unless they are in his face! If they approach politely he is fine and will play. Hee is now not nearly so nervous of new situations or people, and will walk through a busy town centre without issues.Good on lead with recall and selection of commands. Bentley needs a home that can continue giving him the confidence and calm he needs please. We really do not want him to have to come back into kennels as he gets so stressed!

“Bruno has come on such a long way he loves his walks and a game of football or playing with the hose. Bruno can be nervous meeting new people but if your calm and have cheese he will be leaning in for a head stroke.Bruno does have food aggression over his bowls and treats but only when food is in the bowl but when the bowl is empty his fine for you to pick it up. Bruno would probably benefit in a home with a older female dog.”What can I say about this young man. Born 15.8.18, Bruno is a full GSD we are told! He is microchipped and vaccinated and he is now neutered. The kennels were called asking if they would take him in as he was biting. Of course we said yes, and he arrived at the kennels quite stressed and snappy. Given a chance to settle, he started to trust the staff at the kennels and slowly learnt to trust a wider circle. Basically this poor young man had nervous aggression.Bruno has come on leaps and bounds however and is a lot more confident within himself but still takes time to adjust to new people. No young children for obvious reasons, and working on socialising him slowly with other dogs. This lad will need an experienced home that has dealt with this issue before, and with calmness and normality, he should flourish to be the lovely young man that is hiding inside.Bruno was adopted but sadly has come back to us after 18 months as he feels he is just too much due to his protective nature. His adopter has done a lot of work with Bruno and this is what he says about him:“Guards food a little, especially high value treats. Is much better once he knows and trusts you, but still guards a bit.Great with routine. Very active. Loves to play with balls over most toys. Loves a game of tug of war, but gets a bit over excited sometimes.Brilliant recall now, great off the lead (in quiet places of course). Loves rivers etc. Has a huge thing for big branches – both loose and attached to trees still.Chases squirrels, rabbits etc. Very good around deer now and will not chase them if told no.Started to enjoy some agility – especially climbing. Can get a bit frustrated when learning to climb things etc – watch out as he can mouth and nip a little in frustration sometimes.Generally very responsive to a No command in all situations.I’ve had a dog walker 2 days a week for a year now. He’s great with her letting herself in, and walks very well with her.Sits, lays, paw, kiss for treats (kisses can be a bit teethy sometimes – be warned!)Very well behaved indoors – doesn’t chew anything, no toilet issues (he’s like a camel tbh)Bruno is all about his personal space, doesn’t really snuggle. Loves to lay on the bed but bolts if you get on it. Be wary about him laying with his back to you – if you then fuss him he can get a bit snarley. If he is tired or grumpy he is also quite quick to get snarley.”Things like towel drying after a walk need to be done carefully and with rewards – watch out around his feet – he really doesn’t like that (anything to do with his feet is typically not welcomed).Muzzle him for flea, ear drops etc – that will be a battle.Overall a great, active dog who likes his space.”Do you have the experience for Bruno please who would obviously do well with a ‘job’ to keep him busy.

Well what can I say about this poor young lad!Bruno was born May 2021. He is microchipped but that’s it.We were asked by the RSPCA if we could take him on after he had been signed over by his owners who we were told were crack heads!Bruno had never been outside since a puppy so is terrified of everything and everyone. Now safely in our kennels in Cornwall, it is going to be a long and slow road for this poor lad to learn to trust and learn how to be a normal dog enjoying life but we are seeing improvements all the time.Bruno is now fully vaccinated and neutered and is accepting of so many more people and has really started to find his confidence.A very special home needed please.

We were asked to help Buddy from council kennels:“Hi Lizzy, hope you’re ok? I’ve got a really urgent GSD boy & he’s at risk as he barked at the big boss man I was wondering if you could help him pls? This is buddy. He’s a year maybe, young and very white teeth x”Buddy was in fact 1 in January when he arrived He is microchipped. We are told he has had his first vaccination so we will ensure he is fully vaccinated. He is also now neutered.Buddy was all teeth when he first arrived but was easily bribed with a treat! He is a typical young GSD that needs boundaries and training. No children as we do not know his history. He does want to bond with one person and suspect this may be an issue. He is ok with other dogs when out walking (did take a dislike to a poodle) but does not like them in his face at all so would be best as only dog, maybe due to his protectiveness of his person, so something that will need a lot of work and patience. This young man will need a GSD experienced home so he can show his true colours. He would also be suited to a working home!
