About German Shepherd Rescue Scotland

German Shepherd Rescue Scotland was established in 2008 to rehome German Shepherds across Scotland and is a registered charity funded entirely by donations. The rescue takes in dogs from a variety of circumstances, including owner surrender, abandonment and cruelty cases, and works closely with other breed-specific organisations to help as many dogs as possible. Each dog undergoes a full assessment, including veterinary history checks, before being carefully matched to a vetted home with references and a home check completed. Committed to finding the right dog for the right home, the charity also provides ongoing advice and follow-up support after adoption to ensure every dog remains safe, secure and well loved.

Blue, a 6 years old male German Shepherd available for adoption from German Shepherd Rescue Scotland in Scotland

German Shepherd Rescue Scotland

Blue

Scotland
SexMale
Age6 years
BreedGerman Shepherd

Blue is a 6yr old handsome boy who is looking for his new home through no fault of his own. When the volunteer entered the house Blue didn't bark but was a bit wary for the first 5 min then he sussed out what pocket the treats were in and constantly gave the volunteer his paw while she was chatting to his owner. Blue lives very well with children in his family, as usual any children in the home would need to be 10 or older. When outside on the walk he seems very confident with all the noises out and about, however, he does prefer the company of his family over any unwanted dogs coming up to him as he will bark at them. Blue loves to travel in the car, he also loves his long hikes every so often. Training: Knows the basics People: Good Children: Good Dogs: Very wary of other dogs being close to him Travelling: Good

Fawkes, a 6 years old male German Shepherd available for adoption from German Shepherd Rescue Scotland in Scotland

German Shepherd Rescue Scotland

Fawkes

Scotland
SexMale
Age6 years
BreedGerman Shepherd

Fawkes is a compact and good-looking short-coated sable boy who is coming up to 6 years old. He is lively and friendly; he loves to interact with people but sometimes gets a little over-excited and will jump up. Fawkes knows all his basic commands and walks reasonably well on the lead with good engagement. His play style is boisterous and not suitable for a home with children or regularly visiting small ones. Fawkes has never shown any aggression, but he does grumble about being dried or brushed so new owners need to have the experience manage this. He has never lived with another dog and has had limited interaction outside. He has played well with females but has got into a couple of minor scraps with other young males so is generally kept away. He has been taught to move aside and sit to allow dogs to pass. Fawkes is fully house-trained; he does not chew anything other than toys and is fine to be left for short periods. He loves going in the car and settles well until he recognises a favoured destination. Fawkes is being rehomed because of a change in family circumstances which mean his owners feel that he is not getting the amount of mental stimulation and exercise that he needs to thrive.

Kenzo, a 3 years old male German Shepherd available for adoption from German Shepherd Rescue Scotland in Scotland

German Shepherd Rescue Scotland

Kenzo

Scotland
SexMale
Age3 years
BreedGerman Shepherd

Kenzo is a very handsome, large, 3 year old boy. When our volunteer arrived at the garden gate Kenzo barked loudly. When Kenzo's owner let our volunteer into the garden, Kenzo sheltered behind his owner, stopped barking and kept his distance from our volunteer. After a brief chat in the garden Kenzo's owner and our volunteer went into the house and Kenzo followed quietly. Kenzo kept his distance most of the time, but approached our volunteer very tentatively a number of times. Kenzo was wary of unfamiliar items, such as the clipboard and the camera used by our volunteer. By the end of the visit Kenzo was willing to accept treats, which he did very gently, and he accepted being gently petted for brief periods. Kenzo is used to getting some small scraps of food from his owner, after his owner has finished eating and has stood up from the table. Kenzo looks forwards to the food scraps and mouths his owner's hand in anticipation of getting them. Although Kenzo remained timid and somewhat anxious throughout the visit, he was very well behaved, lay down quietly much of the time and did not show any signs of aggression. It is possible that Kenzo's timid dismeanour is at least partly due to recent and very significant changes in his home life. Sadly, Kenzo's previous owner passed away in recent months and Kenzo had very limited socialisation for a lengthy time period before this. Kenzo was a constant companion for his original owner, being very close by her side most of the time. For a couple of years prior to his previous owner's death she suffered poor health and was unable to walk Kenzo. Although Kenzo did not get walks, he did have free roam of a fairly large garden area. Kenzo's previous owner's brother is now living with and caring for Kenzo at Kenzo's original home - while trying to find a new home for Kenzo. Kenzo spends more time on his own than he did with his previous owner, and is experiencing some lifestyle changes that are similar to those a rehomed rescue dogs might experience, e.g. loss of a known or comforting relationship with his previous owner, new handler/main companion and different daily habits and routines Kenzo's new temporary owner is taking him on regular walks and has successfully got Kenzo walking well on lead most of the time - although like some other large dogs Kenzo pulls strongly on the lead when excited. There are wild deer in the surrounding area, and Kenzo gets very excited at their scent. Kenzo also gets excited when he sees cats when he is out on his walks. During a walk with his owner and our volunteer Kenzo met a group of two people and two spaniels. Kenzo was quiet when they got close and were chatting a few feet away, but he did bark and pull on the lead when the group began to walk away. Kenzo's current owner says that Kenzo is good around some dogs he has come to know from meeting on walks. Kenzo is not walked off lead at present, which makes sense as his new owner does not know if he can rely on Kenzo recalling to him consistently and reliably. During the home visit a farmer on a quad bike came into the field immediately behind Kenzo's home, to tend to sheep in the field. Kenzo ran to the fence line barking, but did respond to a recall command from his owner. His owner gave the command three times before Kenzo responded, but given Kenzo's level of excitement it suggests that his recall might become better with further training and further time to bond with his owner. Kenzo is not used to travelling in the car, and his owner is presently working on this. Initially, by getting Kenzo to be comfortable in a stationary car - with the intention to progress, at a rate Kenzo is comfortable with, to making journeys in the car. Kenzo's owner has done well Kenzo's training in the short time he had been caring for him, but any new owner would have further work do to on this. In his new owner's limited experience of him, Kenzo has been good with people once he has time to become less anxious around them. His owner commented that some tradesmen recently carried out work in the house and Kenzo was fine with them. Kenzo has experienced very significant lifestyle changes in recent months, and given Kenzo's present timid and somewhat nervous demeanour he needs to be rehomed in a quiet, adult only home. Any new owners would need to understand how to patiently and gently manage Kenzo's nervousness and anxiety, and carefully manage his interactions with new owners and any other people he came into contact with while he settles in and gains confidence and trust. Roxy, a 2 years old female German Shepherd available for adoption from German Shepherd Rescue Scotland in Scotland

German Shepherd Rescue Scotland

Roxy

Scotland
SexFemale
Age2 years
BreedGerman Shepherd

Roxy is a beautiful young lady (2) with bags of energy, she greeted our volunteer like she had always known her. She was out for a walk when they arrived at her home but she can be vocal when visitors arrive to her home. Roxy will bark at anything moving outside her home when she is left alone, so she is kept away from the front of the house when there is no-one home. She has free run of the house otherwise, and is happy to settle til her humans return. She loves her humans but likes to push the boundarys when there is food around that she would like to eat. Her new home would need to be mindful of leaving food out. Roxy can be reactive and vocal when she sees other dogs out on a walk and is currently walked on a halti as well as a harness, as she is very strong when she pulls. Her owners do not let her off-lead very often in case Roxy sees another dog and runs off towards them but she does enjoy regular and long walks. Her recall is not great when distracted! She has been off-lead in an enclosed exercise area and has also happily met with one or two friends' dogs with reasonably positive outcomes. She seems to have a short attention-span but does seem to be willing to learn so would suit someone who is prepared to put work in with Roxy and teach her good behaviours Roxy is used to children visiting fairly regularly but her owners would not leave her unsupervised as she can be overly boisterous with them. Roxy was living with another dog but was too much for the elderly dog and has had to be separated. Roxy is a beautiful young girl who is bursting with energy and would benefit from an active home where she can burn her energy off and learn new skills with someone prepared to put the time and effort into her.

Saphire, a 5 years old female German Shepherd available for adoption from German Shepherd Rescue Scotland in Scotland

Saphire

Scotland
SexFemale
Age5 years
BreedGerman Shepherd

Sapphire is a 5yo entire female who is being reluctantly rehomed due to her owner’s deteriorating health. Sapphire lives with children and teenagers and is very gentle around them. She lives happily with another dog. She is crate trained and travels well in the car. Sapphire can be excitable .When our volunteer arrived she was in her crate barking very animatedly and straining to get over to her. She also barks a lot when people come to the door. Further training will help with this. When allowed out of her crate, Sapphire greeted her visitor very gently and checked her out thoroughly by sniffing, before lying down quietly with her favourite chew for the rest of the visit. She can, however, chew inappropriate things, particularly wooden chair/table legs etc so is crated when left unsupervised. She can lunge and bark excitedly at other dogs when on a walk but ignores them if she is carrying a ball.Sapphire has attended some training and is quick to learn new things.

Scout, a 4 years old female German Shepherd available for adoption from German Shepherd Rescue Scotland in Scotland

German Shepherd Rescue Scotland

Scout

Scotland
SexFemale
Age4 years
BreedGerman Shepherd

Scout is a lively 4-year-old short-coated sable girl. She is happy to welcome visitors to her home and gets on well with adults and children. Scout is fully house-trained and she can be left for short periods without any issues. She loves going in the car but is a restless traveller. Scout will bark when someone approaches the house but not excessively. Outside she loves to run and play and particularly enjoys retrieving items from the river. Scout has not had any formal training, and new owners would need to work on her basic obedience, lead walking and recall. Scout has never lived with another dog but loves to play given the opportunity, she does need to be taught that not all dogs want to be approached. She has never shown any aggression and is very food oriented so training should be a rewarding experience. Scout is being rehomed because of a change in family circumstances which mean her owners no longer have the time and energy to give her the attention and exercise that she needs

Tara, a 7 years old female German Shepherd available for adoption from German Shepherd Rescue Scotland in Scotland

German Shepherd Rescue Scotland

Tara

Scotland
SexFemale
Age7 years
BreedGerman Shepherd

7 Year old Tara is a lovely dog who is in our kennels. Our volunteer visited Tara while she was on a foster placement for a few weeks, she is now back in our kennels. When our volunteer called at the home of the fosterers Tara barked loudly and jumped up in front of our volunteer. Tara air snapped a couple of times around head height but did not appear to be trying to make contact. Tara followed our volunteer into the living room area, barking but still not coming close to her visitor. After a couple of minutes Tara quietened down and our volunteer then sat on couch. Tara is a fairly large and fairly strong for a female. When our volunteer sat down, Tara approached him and gently took some offered treats. Tara was happy to these and be petted. As Tara became more confident around our volunteer, she mouthed his arm a few times. She did let go quickly when told “No” but pushed her luck and tried again. This would need to be worked on in her new home. Our volunteer engaged Tara in some find the treat games which she quickly began to enjoy. Due to a medical condition with her throat, Tara cannot be taken on long walks. However, Tara does seem to want to be an active dog and to play. This could explain the mouthing (frustration)behaviour she displayed. Engaging Tara in less strenuous activities such as search games around her home, brain games and training exercises to keep her mentally stimulated will give her purpose and reduce boredom and frustration whilst tiring her out at the same time. When the male fosterer got Tara's walk harness and lead to go out Tara became noisy and excited, but when the fosterer sat back down Tara quickly settled down and began playing with a soft toy. Tara is walked on lead attached to a harness as she has a medical condition in her throat area that means she must not have pressure applied to her throat by a lead and collar. On going out for a walk Tara pulled a bit on lead with the fosterer and when a car passed nearby she circled on herself repeatedly. Our volunteer walked Tara and her pulling eased off. When a few other cars passed our volunteer kept Tara close on a short lead length and she did not circle. Our volunteer tried standing Tara some yards from a busier road and found that fairly quickly he could get her to turn away from the passing traffic to take food treats. With careful and consistent desensitisation training, Tara would become easy to manage around passing traffic. While our volunteer was walking Tara she saw three or four other dogs but did not react. Two of the dogs were smaller dogs who were fairly close on the opposite pavement and were barking loudly at Tara, but she did not bark back or react. However, the fosterer advised that Tara is reactive on occasions and will bark at some dogs. Our volunteer thinks that Tara has the potential to make a good companion dog, but will need to be placed with someone who will keep her regularly mentally stimulated, and who will manage her in a firm but fair manner and set clear and consistent boundaries, or she could become overly dominant in the household.

Wilson

SexMale
Age6 months
BreedGerman Shepherd

Wilson has now arrived in our kennels. Wilson is a good-looking friendly boy who is just over a year old. Hehas a black and tan short coat with plush glossy hair. Wilson did nothave a great start in life and came to his current family around 6months ago, unfortunately a change in their circumstances mean he isagain needing a new home. Wilson can be destructive when left so needs an owner who will bearound most of the time. He has lived with children and a small dog, butwhen he gets excited, he can spin around without thought for who or what he may bump into so can damage himself and those around him. We think therefore that he would be best suited to being the sole pet in an adult only household. Wilson is happy to greet visitors and takes treats very politely. Hehas not had any formal training but is eager to please. He walksreasonably well on the lead after initial over-excitement, and he ishappy and relaxed when out. Wilson is house-trained, and he travels OKin the car. New owners would need to have the time and experience to work onbasic obedience and to provide Wilson with the mental stimulation andphysical exercise needed to help him mature into a well-balanced adult. They will also need to commit to having him neutered once he is oldenough.
