About Hay Animal Rescue

HART (Hay Animal Rescue Team) is a small, volunteer-led charity based in Hay-on-Wye, Mid-Wales, supported by dedicated trustees, foster carers, and an admin team. The rescue primarily helps dogs and cats in need of new homes, while also stepping in for small animals and other species during emergencies. All animals are cared for in experienced foster homes, where they are assessed, rehabilitated, and prepared for adoption. Before rehoming, every animal is vaccinated, microchipped, neutered when age-appropriate, and treated for fleas and worms to ensure a healthy start in their forever home.

BreedYorkshire Terrier x Pomeranian

7-month-old Yorkshire Terrier x PomeranianBear’s a young, intelligent, high-energy pup who has simply not been taught how to channel himself yet. He’s bright as a button, eager, and full of potential - but he needs consistency, boundaries, and the right home to help him put all those pieces together.Bear is believed to be a Pom × Yorkie type mix, though we suspect there’s likely some Cairn Terrier or similar breed in there too. Whatever his exact mix, what’s clear is that he’s a small, sturdy, very busy terrier-type dog with a big personality and even bigger energy levels. At this stage, Bear is still very much learning how to be a dog in a home environment - but the good news is, he is already showing huge improvement.Bear has come on leaps and bounds while with us:Now a sweet, affectionate, people-loving little dogNipping behaviour has completely stopped in our careRecall is improving well (with ongoing training needed)Sleeps through the night and is settling into routineBeginning to understand boundaries and structureHe’s a cracking little dog who genuinely wants to get things right — he just needs help learning how.Bear is very much at the beginning of his training journey:Lead walking is very limited and overstimulating for himGets overexcited easily and needs calm, structured guidanceStrong prey drive - small, fast animals will trigger himChews when bored and is very active mentally and physicallyGrooming is currently a challenge due to overexcitementHe is not yet ready for relaxed outings or busy environments.Friendly and playful off-lead and in the homeEnjoys canine company and settles well with other dogsNo issues with dogs he has met in our careOn-lead greetings still need work due to overexcitementHe would likely benefit from living with another confident, well-balanced dog.At present, lead walking is a work in progress. Bear becomes overstimulated easily and struggles to focus. He will need an experienced adopter who is prepared to patiently build these skills from the ground up.Experienced with energetic, intelligent terrier-type dogsActive and able to provide mental and physical stimulationSuitable for homes with confident older childrenAble to provide structure, consistency, and routineIdeally interested in training, agility, or dog sportsBear has all the ingredients to become an incredible little dog - brains, drive, personality, and affection. What he needs now is someone committed enough to shape that potential. With the right guidance, he would absolutely thrive in an agility or active training home where his energy becomes something purposeful and rewarding. If you feel Bear could be the right match for your home, please complete the application form via the link below.Based in Hay-on-WyeCharity Number: 1207328Covering areas of Powys and HerefordshireRehoming Fees Financial Transparency PolicyAnimal Welfare and Care Standards Policy

A gloriously silly, affectionate clown ready to bring the full Basset experience to an active home.Meet Benji, a gorgeous 1-year-old Basset Hound who is ready to completely steal your heart.Benji is a big, strong, and wonderfully comedic lad who has had quite a dramatic journey recently, but he is now fully healed, happy and searching for the perfect forever home.He is a brilliant boy who has only ever known kindness in his life and he is absolutely convinced that he is a lap dog.If you love the full Basset experience, including the ears, the charm, the stubbornness and the comedy, Benji is definitely your boy!Benji is a stunning, purebred Basset Hound who comes complete with his full paperwork. He came into the care of Hay Animal Rescue Team due to unforeseen circumstances and has been a very well-loved pet. He is microchipped, fully vaccinated, flea and worm treated, and neutered. You might wonder why we went quiet about Benji for a little while during his initial search. To put it simply, Benji ate a rock… a whole rock! This led to major emergency surgery, a very long recovery, a very stressed rescue team and a vet bill that could make a grown adult weep. The good news is that he has bounced back beautifully, his medical journey is now behind him and he is fully ready to meet his match!Fully house trained, microchipped, and neuteredLooking for an active, structured forever homeBenji is the absolute definition of big dog energy on short legs. He is a joyful, affectionate sweetheart who loves to play and is highly toy-motivated. He is also an intelligent lad who already knows a lot of commands and is genuinely eager to learn more.Brilliant for handling: Benji absolutely loves being groomed and is incredibly patient for his nail trims.Fully house trained: He has excellent house manners and understands his routine perfectly.Eager to engage: He loves proper play sessions and is very responsive to training when toys are involved.Adopters should be prepared for the authentic, wonderful realities of the breed. With Benji in your life, you can expect hair everywhere, mud everywhere, and a nose that never switches off, meaning you will likely never eat a meal in peace again! He also has a total obsession with water. Puddles, water troughs, or buckets, if it splashes, Benji is going to be straight in it.Benji is a highly social boy who thoroughly enjoys the company of other dogs, but he currently lacks sharing manners. Because he can be a bit rude with his resources, he needs a dog-savvy home. He could happily live with a large, friendly and playful dog, but he is not suitable to live with elderly or frail resident dogs who might find his large presence a bit too much.Due to his background and traits, Benji has some strict non-negotiable requirements regarding his social setup:No young children: Benji is a big, powerful dog who will easily knock little ones over and he strongly dislikes being pulled around. No cats or small furries: He possesses a very strong prey drive. No livestock access: He cannot be rehomed where he has direct access to farm animals.Benji is not your typical couch-potato Basset Hound. He is an active, energetic boy who needs a physically capable home that can match his strength and provide plenty of daily simulation.Have a physically strong owner who can manage a powerful dog on short legsProvide a completely secure garden, as Benji is very strong, can jump, and is not traffic-savvyCommit to keeping him on-lead at all times in public, because when he is out and about, his nose makes all the decisionsShow a strong commitment to ongoing training and boundariesBe a home where he is not left alone for more than 4 hours, as he will cry and chew if left too long, which is something his new family will need to work on with structure and patienceWe would prefer applicants to have previous Basset Hound experience so they truly understand and appreciate the beautiful quirks of

BreedBearded Collie

An intelligent, striking boy who needs a confident handler to help him unlock his full potential.Meet Frankie, a 7-month-old Bearded Collie cross Border Collie who is on the lookout for a very specific forever home.Frankie is a young, bright lad who has unfortunately had a bit of a tricky start when it comes to learning the rules of the world. Due to very poor training advice early on in his puppyhood, Frankie has learned that he is entirely in charge and can do whatever he pleases. He is not an easy dog right now, and he is going to be a bit of a handful initially. However, we know that in the right, experienced hands, he is going to make an absolutely awesome companion.Frankie is a handsome Bearded Collie and Border Collie mix who has all the intelligence and drive you would expect from his breeding. Because he missed out on the correct guidance as a young puppy, he now needs an experienced, confident owner who can put the basics firmly back in place and kindly but clearly show him what is acceptable and what isn't.To give Frankie the absolute best chance at success, Hay Animal Rescue Team will fund ongoing support/ training for him with Malvern Fabdogs. It is essential that his new owners are fully committed to using positive training methods to rebuild his boundaries. Because of this tailored support, his new family will need to live within a two-hour drive of Malvern so they can easily attend these sessions.A 7-month-old Bearded Collie x Border Collie maleIn need of an experienced, adult-only homeRequiring a family living within 2 hours of Malvern for funded training supportWhile Frankie has some behaviours that need sorting out, he also has some fantastic foundational traits that will make training him a rewarding experience. He is a clever lad who learns incredibly quickly when he is guided with patience and positive reinforcement.Brilliant with his crate: Frankie is fully crate trained, sleeps soundly through the night, and settles down beautifully when left alone.Highly motivated: He absolutely loves his toys and is very food-motivated, which is a fantastic tool for his ongoing positive training.Basic understanding: He already understands his basic commands and is eager to engage.Decent recall: Frankie's off-lead recall really isn't bad at all, and he comes back reasonably reliably when he is called.Frankie is making great progress with his social skills and has learned to respect other dogs. However, because of his big personality, he cannot live with just any dog.If he is to live with a resident dog, it must be a strong, steady, and balanced companion who can confidently set boundaries. Frankie is simply too much for weaker, younger, or elderly dogs who cannot tell him to stop when he gets over-excited. Additionally, Frankie cannot live with cats, as he loves to chase them.Frankie needs a structured, calm, and predictable environment where he can understand where he actually belongs in the world.Be an adult-only home with absolutely no children (this is non-negotiable for their safety and his)Have a patient, firm, and knowledgeable owner committed to positive reward-based trainingBe a home that does not require a lot of car travel, as Frankie is currently an extremely poor traveller (though we are actively working on this with him)Be a pet-free home or one with a strong, companionable resident dogBe a pet-home only, as Frankie is not suited to a working dog lifestyleWhile activities like agility might be a wonderful option for his clever brain in the future, his immediate focus in his new home must be purely on basic manners and boundaries.Frankie is using nipping as a primary form of communication because this behaviour was never corrected when he was a tiny pup. At his current age and size, this is no longer safe or acceptable, which is why we are being incredibly clear about his needs.Frankie is a diamond in the rough. He needs someone who won't let him rule the roos
