About Heathlands Animal Sanctuary

Heathlands Animal Sanctuary is a volunteer-run animal rescue charity based in Royston, Hertfordshire, dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of unwanted domestic pets. The sanctuary supports dogs, cats, rabbits, and some caged birds, caring for most animals in foster homes rather than a central facility. With a strict non-destruction policy, Heathlands rehomes hundreds of animals each year that might otherwise face euthanasia in council pounds. By using foster care, the charity is able to better assess each animal’s temperament and needs, helping to place them into safe, suitable homes primarily across Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Bedfordshire, with some adoptions considered nationwide.

BreedMastiff

Arnie is a lovely big friendly boy of around 40kg. He loves a fuss and everyone he's met. Fine with kids, joggers, cars, bikes, loud noises, coffee shops etc. He's very easy in the home and sleeps quietly downstairs all night. He's generally fine with other dogs but seems to prefer females. He enjoys his food and treats and hasn't shown any signs of allergies or food intolerance. He can be quite strong on the lead at the start of a walk but loves his play time with toys in the paddock and soon calms down after a run. Knows all basic commands.Arnie would be best suited with older teenage children as he is a big boy and doesn't realise his size. No cats or small furries.

BreedCrossbreed

Corky is cute, cuddly, solid fella of around 15kg, who's full of beans! A busy little man, he discovered the toy box straight away, absolutely loves balls, everything from a tennis ball to a football. He also enjoys chew toys and even swimming with a little encouragement. He's been enjoying romping with the female dogs in the foster home but would probably prefer to be an only dog. He loves his walks, though he can be quite strong on lead, so more work is needed on this. Corky travels fine in the car, even for an hour or 2. His recall is improving in a secure field and he behaves well when off lead. He will sometimes bark at other dogs but once he's met them and had a sniff, he just wants to play. Corky doesn't seem to have had much input so he would benefit from some basic training. He is a quick learner and foster mum is currently working on 'sit' and 'wait' while getting ready for walks, crossing roads etc.He enjoys having people around and will need a fairly active home, he may bark initially when left but will settle as long as he's had a walk.Corks adores people and has bundles of character, he will make a great addition to the right household.Kids around 12+. Okay with bold cats

Pedro, a 1 year old male Shih Tzu available for adoption from Heathlands Animal Sanctuary in Hertfordshire

Heathlands Animal Sanctuary

Pedro

Hertfordshire
SexMale
Age1 year
BreedShih Tzu

Poor Pedro is a very misunderstood dog who has not had the essential training and boundaries early on. This is resulted in him doing as he pleases, calling the shots and if he doesn't get his own way, will make a grab for your ankles! He needs an adult home with an experienced person who will commit to his training and exercise needs. Not a dog you can just go up to and handle, Pedro needs to get to know you a little first so hands off training which is how it should be.He is receiving firm, positive training and responding very well to it. He can be a very loving little boy once he trusts you and respects your authority. A dog that will benefit from routine. He has been groomed and was a good boy so he is not overly sensitive. Anybody wishing to adopt will receive training techniques from us to ensure this little guy continues to improve and thrive, he just needs the right person. He loves toys and is fine with other dogs.Adult only home. Cat test on request

He is crate trained and can be left for a few hours once walked. He loves other dogs and is okay with bold cats. Penn bonds strongly with his primary carer and can become possesive so ideally he is looking for a commited person who he will be a loyal companion to. He can be socially awkward when out and about on the lead and can lunge at things that are strange to him but he has come on very well with his dedicated team of volunteers taking him out for new experiences and showing him the world isn’t that scary. Vicky, a 3 years old female Labrador available for adoption from Heathlands Animal Sanctuary in Hertfordshire

Heathlands Animal Sanctuary

Vicky

Hertfordshire
SexFemale
Age3 years
BreedLabrador

Vicky is an absolute darling with people. A sweet natured, gentle and affectionate companion who just wants to be with you. About standard medium lab size at 31kg.She's good in the house and garden, a happy soul who delights in bouncing around the garden wagging like mad and rolling in the grass for tummy rubs. She's starting to play with toys too.Vicky is sharing her foster home with 2 dogs who she gets on well with. She walks nicely on lead and meets other polite dogs well, particularly if smaller. Dogs who come rushing over will get a good barking at, particularly if they are bigger than her. She's not aggressive, she's scared. She needs an experienced home with a strong, understanding leader so she can feel secure. With more socialising and the right handling, we believe she will get over this. She is already mixing with dogs in the foster home.NB Vicky is not always good meeting dogs in the home either. This will also need work so she will be best homed as an only dog unless people are experienced and willing to do a gradual introduction once in the new home.Older kids. Bold cats
