About Heathlands Animal Sanctuary

Heathlands Animal Sanctuary is a volunteer-run animal rescue charity based in Royston, Hertfordshire, dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of unwanted domestic pets. The sanctuary supports dogs, cats, rabbits, and some caged birds, caring for most animals in foster homes rather than a central facility. With a strict non-destruction policy, Heathlands rehomes hundreds of animals each year that might otherwise face euthanasia in council pounds. By using foster care, the charity is able to better assess each animal’s temperament and needs, helping to place them into safe, suitable homes primarily across Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Bedfordshire, with some adoptions considered nationwide.

Gentle, handsome little Alfie is a very sweet pup but can be anxious and is still learning about the world. Due to his worries, he will need a confident and playful doggy buddy in the home to help bring him out of his shell. He's very attached to the fosters Border terrier. He's still getting used to the great outdoors and needs a minute to compose himself when something spooks him. He likes to meet other dogs but needs more socialising and puppy classes to help him gain confidence. Alfie now enjoys being stroked and is getting pretty good meeting new people. He is house trained and settles in his crate at night. He's been getting some life experience and training with his foster family, learnt touch, sit and paw.Okay with kids around 8+. Bold cats only

Aria is another of the 4 pups who came in before Christmas, having had no real life experience until they arrived. She's a sweet and affectionate little girl once she gets to know you but it can take a little while to build trust.Aria gets on really well with dogs of all sizes and loves to play with them. She will need a confident doggy friend in the home to help with her confidence as she can be quite nervous still. She is still getting used to the outside world, going for walks etc and although a little unsure at times, she is enjoying them now.Aria is pretty much toilet trained now and she has even started to tap at the back door when she needs to go out. Ellie

Hertfordshire
SexFemale

BreedUnknown

Ellie has not had a great life so far. Not much attention or training and never walked on a lead although she does now. Despite this she is friendly but can be shy meeting people at first, good with friendly dogs. She needs someone willing to get her out in the big wide world, put in the training and socialisation and just make her a normal puppy. She does love to play.Ellie has a grooming requirement that can be expensive so please factor that in. She was in a fearful state on arrival and her coat must be kept tangle free to avoid her being shaved in the future. She does have quite a flat face sadly, so care with exercise especially in heat.Children 7+. Fine with cats

Jimmie

Hertfordshire

BreedCrossbreed

Jimmie is a gorgeous big gentle bear of around 35kg.He's really good in the home and quiet at night. Lives with a similar size dog and a terrier in his foster home. He's also had small puppies staying with him and been good with everything. He'd be happy to live with other dogs but should be fine on his own too.Jimmie enjoys his walks, a stroll and sniffari being more his style than a forced march! He travels well, uses a ramp to get into the boot of the car, or he could climb into the foot well in the back and onto the seat from there. He on a special low fat diet and a joint supplement but otherwise in pretty good nick for big bear who was in a truly pitiful state on arrival.Really great character. Kid's around 8+. Not cat tested

BreedChow Chow

Are you looking for a loyal companion with a big personality and an even bigger coat (when it grows back)? Meet Lulu, the small, 18kg Chow Chow, who is looking for her forever home. She's a fairly typical Chow who has clearly had a rough time. She was so matted, looking like she'd been living outdoors, that she had to be shaved. Not something we take lightly with a double coated breed, She will need daily brushing while her coat grows back to help her get used to being groomed and stop any tangles developing.Lulu absolutely loves her daily walks. She’s great on the lead and enjoys taking in the sights and smells. She's also a real foodie, if there’s food involved, she's there! Great for training.A professional napper, Lulu has an impressive snoring ‘song’. You won't need a white noise machine with her around!Solo Queen, while she currently lives with another dog in her foster home, she would relish having all the love and attention to herself.Lulu struggles with separation anxiety, so she will need a human who works from home, is retired or has a job where she can tag along. She just wants to be where her human is.If you’re an experienced dog owner, looking for a devoted shadow who will keep you active and entertained, Lulu might be the lady for you!Adult home.
