About National Animal Welfare Trust

National Animal Welfare Trust is an independent UK animal welfare charity founded in 1971, with roots dating back to earlier efforts to protect animals from harm and neglect. The Trust rescues, cares for, and rehomes around 1,200 animals each year through a network of centres across southern England, including specialist facilities for elderly pets. Over the decades, NAWT has expanded by supporting and integrating established local rescues, ensuring long-term care and improved welfare standards for animals in their communities. Alongside rescue and rehoming, the charity raises funds through charity shops and local supporter groups, continuing its mission to protect and improve the lives of animals in need.

Hello... I’m Albie, and I’ve been told I’m ridiculously handsome and squishy!I came into rescue with my friend Eden after we were sadly left at a vet practice. I think Eden is absolutely brilliant and I’m very happy following her around, even if she sometimes acts like she could take or leave my company. I don’t mind though, I’m just a sweet boy who likes having friends around. I’m around four years old, and the humans say one of my best features is my adorable wiggly bum. Apparently, when I get excited to see people, my whole back end joins in. I just can’t help myself.I absolutely love cuddles, cosy naps, tasty snacks, and generally being adored. I’m a big fan of food, maybe a little too much of a fan if we’re being honest, so I’m currently on a diet to help me lose some weight and improve my breathing. It’s really important that my future family helps me stay fit and healthy so I can avoid any health issues and keep feeling my best.I’ll also need some surgery soon to help with my breathing, but through it all I remain a very happy, loving little guy who just wants affection and a comfy place to snooze.I could potentially live with older children who are gentle and kind. I may also be able to live with a cat, although I haven’t been cat tested yet, so slow introductions would be important. Unlike Eden, I actually quite enjoy having canine company and could happily live with another friendly dog.More than anything, I’m looking for a loving home where I can be spoiled appropriately (within my diet plan, of course), enjoy plenty of cuddles, and wiggle my way right into your heart. If you’re searching for a soft-hearted, affectionate companion with the sweetest little bum wiggles around... I think we might be perfect for each other.

Apollo

BreedMastiff

Apollo is a stunning 50kg Mastiff, with an enormous heart. He has amazing manners, as you would need from a dog of his size. He’s delightful on walks and meets both people and other dogs with calm, respectful behaviour when returned, but doesn't always want to stay and chat! He is muzzle trained and fly's the movement flag with pride. Apollo is a routine guy, he can be a bit dishevelled if things are out of kilter, but with a patient home he can work through things and adjust accordingly. He craves to be your shadow and just wants to share your world. He is and hearted dog with an even bigger personality. Whether you’re cooking dinner, folding laundry, or settling down on the sofa, Apollo wants to be right there beside you, he’s very much a ā€œshadowā€ companion.Special Features• Size-blind: Apollo has no idea he’s enormous, which makes his cuddles both hilarious and wonderfully cosy.• Big love, big presence: He thrives on being involved but not every empty space needs to have Apollo in it, even if he thinks otherwise.Apollo is looking for a home that understands his gentle soul, playful spirit, and he’ll flourish in a calm environment where he can be included in your daily routines. If you’re ready to welcome a loyal, goofy, and endlessly affectionate companion, one who will adore you wholeheartedly and benefit from a bit of structure, Apollo might just be your perfect match.

Archie, a 8 years old male Chihuahua available for adoption from National Animal Welfare Trust in Hertfordshire

Hi everyone, my name's Archie and I may be little in size but have a big personality to make up for it.I have recently spent the last couple of months in Foster care with two staff members from the centre here, and I have loved being in a comfy home environment again. This has allowed the team to learn a lot more about my rehoming requirements. So here goes......I am going to need quite a special home that's nice and quiet with an owner who will give me lots of time, patience, reassurance and understanding as I am a very worried and scared little boy. I am not the type of dog that likes to be fussed or petted, so if you are looking for a lap dog that isn't me I'm afraid. However, the team have been working on other ways of interacting with me and I now know a "touch" command and I get so excited to do this, I'm such a good boy!I would also benefit from having a space in my new home just for me, where I can go to if I need some quiet time - my Foster Mums say I get very sleepy in the evening and will take myself off to my favourite "igloo" bed.I am spotlessly clean in the home, and I actually settle very well so would be fine to leave for a period of time - you will most probably find me asleep under my blanket upon your return as I love getting all snuggly and warm. I am not a fan of the rain, mud, getting dirty or being woken up from my snoozing though!Once I know and trust you the real Archie comes out to play - I just love my special mini sized balls and tug toys, we could have so much fun! I am actually very clever and know lots of commands, love enrichment activities and am keen to learn new things. I am good on the lead and really enjoy sniffy walks as long as I'm away from busy roads.I wouldn't be able to live with cats or dogs I'm afraid, but if you have an adult only home and would be willing to handle me carefully and build up my confidence I would love to meet you and show you the real Archie x

Hey there, I'm Bruno - my best pal Miffy and I are looking for a new home as sadly our beloved human Mummy has passed away, and her family, heartbreakingly, are unable to keep us.We are loving, loyal and kind, and very much a bonded pair, so really need a new owner who can take us both. We are so very friendly and great fun to be around so we are hoping it won't be too long before someone comes forward for us. We are a couple of sensitive souls and have been through a really traumatic time of late, in fact we could both tell how ill our lovely owner was and did get a bit stressed and start losing our hair. However, we are now getting back to our normal selves and feeling much better and looking forward to our next chapter. We have been enjoying getting back out on lovely walks and even having some runs on the beach which was great fun.We have been used to living with a cat and we got on just fine, and although we can walk out with other dogs, it has only ever been us two at home so we think it's best if it carries on like that. We can get very overwhelmed and excited by everything and anything, and will become quite vocal, so we are looking for an owner who won't mind that and can give us the time to settle down again. With us being poodles we will need regular coat care, and are used to going to the groomers for a trim with no issues at all. We also love travelling in the car and happily sit on the back seat, so can join you on all sorts of adventures. We haven't lived with children, but have been around family members children regularly and we love them. We have been used to our owner being at home with us most of the time, so wouldn't suit a home where we would need to be left for long periods every day, but we do cope with a couple of hours here and there with no problems. You will generally find us curled up together having a sleep, we are like 2 peas in a pod! We will jump at the chance to sit on your laps or even sleep on your bed with you if we are allowed, so hopefully someone out there has the room in their hearts for a couple of gorgeous boys like us xx

Chance

Hi I’m Chance. I’m 5 years old, and I found my way into rescue after my time at the pound ran out. It was all a bit scary and confusing, if I’m honest. I’m still figuring things out.I can be quite an anxious boy in certain situations. But once I know I’m safe, that’s when the real me comes out.If I bond with you, you’ll know it. I’ve got the wiggliest bum and the happiest tail you’ve ever seen, all ready to greet my favourite people. I absolutely adore fuss and attention. Gentle strokes, kind words, sitting close together... that’s my love language. I’m a soft-hearted, gentle soul who just wants to feel secure and loved.I’ll need someone patient and understanding who can help me build my confidence at my own pace. I’m just a little unsure about life sometimes. With reassurance and positive experiences, I really will blossom.I’ll also need some support with my dog socialisation. I’m a bit fearful around other dogs right now, so slow introductions and ongoing positive training will help me learn that I don’t need to worry. In return, I promise to be the sweetest, most loyal companion you could ask for. I may take a little time to find my brave, but when I do, you’ll have a best friend for life.If you’ve got a kind heart and a bit of patience to spare, I’d love to meet you. Maybe my second chance starts with you.

Darla, a 3 years old female Mastiff available for adoption from National Animal Welfare Trust in Hertfordshire

National Animal Welfare Trust

Darla

Hertfordshire
SexFemale
Age3 years
BreedMastiff

Meet Darla! Darla is a larger than life personality, hoping to jump into her new forever home and bring unlimited joy and laughs into the world. At nearly 3 years old, Darla is a bit of an overgrown puppy who has been learning about manners and how to properly behave when out and about. She is so enthusiastic about absolutely everything she does, she is keen to explore and enjoy her youthful years. With a love for walks and zoomies, Darla is really looking for a family who love to be outdoors - but don't worry, she will also appreciate her home comforts and will appreciate a snack and cuddles on the sofa! Darla has a big love for toys but can become a little over excited when playing, so calmer, structured games and best for her - she's not yet got the hang of games like fetch and just runs after the ball, gets zoomies and forgets all about the toy! She is a very fun girl who makes everyone laugh. Darla has shown here that she can be really playful with other dogs, so it may be possible for her to live with another dog, providing that they are able to play and match her bouncy energy. Darla can be quite boisterous so this needs to be considered in finding the right match for her. In a previous home, Darla has lived with children and is very good around them, so sensible older children who are used to larger dogs may be suitable. If you think you could provide Darla with the fun loving home that she needs, please register your interest.

Eden, a 4 years old female French Bulldog available for adoption from National Animal Welfare Trust in Hertfordshire

Hi! I’m Eden, part dog, part rocket, part cuddle expert.I came into rescue with my friend Albie after we were sadly left at a vet practice, but if there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I don’t let anything slow me down... not even the fact that I only have three legs. I can still zoom around faster than most dogs with four.I absolutely love to play, I love a good zoomie around the garden, and I’m happiest when I’m right in the middle of whatever’s going on. I adore people and honestly think attention should probably revolve around me at all times. Cuddles? Yes please. Fuss? Even better. Being told I’m beautiful? Essential. The humans here say I’m full of character, and I think that’s a polite way of saying I’m hilarious, confident, and just a little bit dramatic.Even though I arrived with Albie, we’re looking for separate homes as I’m pretty indifferent about sharing the spotlight. I could potentially live with another dog, but if I’m honest, I really enjoy being the star of the show and would probably thrive as the only dog in the home.I could live with older children who understand that sometimes I get a little excited, but cats are probably not for me, I’d find them far too interesting and would definitely want to turn them into part of the entertainment.I’ll also need a little surgery soon to help me breathe more comfortably, which the rescue is hoping to get booked in shortly. But trust me, it doesn’t stop me enjoying life one bit. What I really want is a home full of love, laughter, adventures, and a sofa big enough for me to stretch out on after my zoomies. If you’re looking for a dog with spirit, personality, and a huge heart packed into three speedy legs... I might just be your girl.

Hello, I'm Hugo, I’m a handsome 3-year-old Mastiff mix with the heart of a softie and the size of a gentle giant. At 56kg, I’m definitely a big boy, but underneath it all I’m just a loving, affectionate goofball who wants nothing more than to be part of the family. One of my favourite things in the world is heading out on adventures. I absolutely love meeting new people, exploring new places, and taking in all the sights and smells. Whether it’s a countryside walk, a trip to the park, or a stroll to the vets, I’m happiest when I’m out making memories with my favourite humans.Because I’m such a big lad, I can be strong on the lead if I get excited, but I wear my Halti and it helps me walk beautifully. With it on, I’m happy to stroll along nicely and enjoy the journey, and I’d love a family who will continue helping me with my training and confidence.I adore a fuss and I’m a true Mastiff at heart – expect lots of leaning, cuddles, and attempts to convince you that I’m actually a lap dog! I have so much love to give and I’m looking for someone who’ll let me be their loyal best friend.I’m a sociable boy who loves other dogs and could potentially live with a similar-sized, well-matched canine companion who enjoys a good play session. Because of my size, I’m looking for an adult-only home, and I’d prefer a cat-free one too, as I find them a little too interesting!I’ve been waiting for my forever home for far too long now, and everyone here agrees that I really deserve a family of my own. If you’re experienced with larger breeds and looking for a kind-hearted, adventure-loving companion who will repay you with endless loyalty and affection, I might just be the missing piece of your family.

Look at me, look at me!!!! I'm the gorgeous Lilly!!I am a bouncy, young energetic girl who is ready to get going with life.....so who is joining me?I came into the centre as a stray, so the staff here have had to get to know me from scratch, but so far they have discovered that I am super clever and great fun to be around. As with any dog my age I am still going to need lots of help with my training but I am extremely quick at picking up things and a real joy to work with. I can be a bit boisterous at times and I'm going to be a large sized dog when fully grown so will need new owners and a new home that can cope with a big dog who is full of fun and energy.Although I can socialise with other dogs I think a home with just me is going to be best as I can get a bit protective over things. I am going to need an adult only home too, ideally with someone who has dealt with guarding issues before or at least someone who will be willing to follow the advice from the team here at the centre.I haven't had the greatest start to life so far, but I honestly can't wait for a home to call my own xx Lilly xx
