About Newcastle Dogs & Cats Shelter

Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter was established in 1896 and has a long history of helping animals that are lost, unwanted, neglected, abused, or abandoned across the North East. Based at Benton North Farm in Newcastle, the charity works to reunite lost dogs and cats with their owners and find loving new homes for those who need one. Its mission is to save lives across the region while promoting kindness and preventing cruelty to animals. Guided by strong values of compassion, commitment, adaptability, support, and joy, the shelter places animal welfare and community at the heart of everything it does. Newcastle Dogs & Cats Shelter

Arwen

Tyne and Wear
SexFemale
Age3 years
BreedStaffordshire Bull Terrier

Arwen could live with children aged 10+ and will need to be the only animal in the home.Arwen is a lovely little lady who absolutely adores spending time with her humans and simply loves attention! She is full of beans and so will need an active family who can keep up with her and take her on lots of lovely adventures, keeping her both mentally and physically stimulated.Arwen has had a poor start to life, we have very little background information about her, but we do know that was previously left in a garden most of the time. Arwen has shown some signs that she may struggle when left alone and so she will need a family who are prepared for this and are able to slowly build up the amount of time she is left for.Arwen does also typically prefer to have space from other dogs and can, at times, be a little reactive. She will need a family who are confident and capable of managing this behaviour, whilst working on her training to help her learn some more appropriate responses. This sweet lady is such a pleasure to spend time with. She is so fun to be around and often has us laughing with her daft ways and her little tappy tappy toe dance as she sees you coming. She loves nothing more than human company – she is such a friendly girl – nobody is a stranger to Arwen! She would spend all day being made a fuss of and needs a family who are able to spend a lot of time with her.Despite the life Arwen has previously had, she still has so much love to give and more than deserves to finally be shown what the safety and security of a true forever home feels like, where she can be spoilt rotten and shown the love she should’ve always known from her forever family.

Joker could live with children aged 10+. He could potentially live with other dogs, but no cats or other small animalsJoker is a super friendly and confident young lad who loves being around people and getting all the attention he possibly can! Once out and about on his walks he is awesome and loves exploring his environment enjoying all the sniffs!Joker responds well to commands and, as he is so food motivated, training comes easily too him!Joker can jump high which will need to be considered by any potential rehomers – though management using a longline or similar when he first goes home should be a simple solution to keeping his paws on the floor!Joker is quite simply an all-round good lad who we have no doubt will bring so much love and so may laughs to his new home.

He has also enjoyed playing with toys and will engage with a variety of them – such as balls and soft toys. His favourite thing of all, though, is definitely his treats! Stefan is a super food-oriented boy and will even sometimes chatter and vibrate with excitement when he anticipates food. This is something his new family will need to consider, as we imagine management will need to be put in place around mealtimes / food in the home.Sadly, Stefan arrived into our care as a stay with no microchip, so we have no background information on his previous life prior to his arrival here at the shelter.
