About Oakwood Dog Rescue

Oakwood Dog Rescue is a privately funded dog rescue charity operating since 2009 with a strong focus on long-term, successful rehoming rather than quick placements. The charity works with dogs of all breeds, ages, and backgrounds, including those with behavioural or special needs, aiming to rehabilitate each dog and place them into a single, lifelong home through a carefully managed adoption process. Oakwood’s purpose-built facilities are designed to prioritise welfare, offering enrichment, exercise, and calm kennel environments supported by dedicated volunteers. Funded entirely by public generosity and supported by on-site social enterprises, the rescue continues to help vulnerable dogs from the UK and overseas while making difficult welfare decisions only when all other options have been exhausted.

They were very worried that these 2 babies wouldn't survive the winter as they were already so frail, and temperatures had already dropped to -5 degrees. It usually gets to -20 during their winter months. In the photos, Adele is attached to Beyonce's side. Over time though, these 2 girls have made many new friends and are no longer reliant on each other. They both now kennel share with different dogs and are settled and happy with their groups. Unfortunately, when letting them back together for play dates, it seems that these 2 have really grown apart and no longer enjoy spending time with each other.Adele has never lived in a home before and so would require time, patience, understanding and lots of positive based training to help her learn the ropes of home life.\n\nWith other dogs: Adele loves playing out with the other pups and adult dogs, if she were to live with anotehr dog, they would need to be of similar or larger size than Adele. With cats:Adele is has met a cat whilst in our care. She was off lead and showed no prey drive. Please note - it was a very confident cat that she met so if she were to meet a cat that was skitty and ran, it is likley that she would chase due to a dogs natural instinct to do so.\n\nAdele loves nothing more than running around our fields and yards with all of her doggy friends. She's not ready to come inside a minute before the kennel shift is over. Adele has moderate to high energy levels at present.\n\nAdele has never before lived in a home. She will need to be left for minimal periods to begin with so she can settle in and realise that she is safe. This time alone (with another dog) can be built up so she'd be able to be left up to around 4 hours\n\nAdele is not yet lead trained. She is still very unsure about being handled and so lead training will come once she has built a bond with her new family\n\nAdele has no form of basic training. This will all come in time once she has settled and learnt to fully trust her adopters\n\nClick the button below to start the adoption application process!

Sex: MaleAge: Approx. 9 yearsSize: Large (Lab size)Breed: Mixed breed\n\nHey guys, Bobbie here! I originally arrived at Oakwood back in Janurary 2021. When I first arrived I was very scared due to how mistreated I was in Romania. It took me a while to begin to trust people again but I managed to find a home in March 2021. In the home I was very loved and the last 14 months I was there I made lots of progress in so many ways. Sadly, I have now come back to Oakwood due to compatibility issues with my family. I am an incredibly loyal boy and tend to bond strongly with one person. For this reason I would prefer a 1 person household that I can give all my love and attention to. The humans said they understand what a huge ask this is though so they will also be happy to look at a 2 person household too, it just may take me a little longer for me to feel safe with meeting 2 new people at the same time. Unfortunately I can really struggle with new people and introductions need to be very slow so that I feel safe - but I promise that I will be the bravest boy and do my absolute best as I really do want nothing more than to meet my forever family. Once I trust you, I guarentee that you will have a best friend for life. My ideal home would have minimal visitors. I'm a lazy boy who enjoys snoozing in my comfy beds, don't let that fool you though because I am super clever really! I enjoy enrichment and love my snuffle & lick mats. I also really enjoy obedience and trick training and it seems to entertain the humans when I show off all the cool tricks I know. I also love a blast on our big field, especially with my girlfriend Alex <3\n\nThe staff here at Oakwood have been helping me get used to lead walking. I will now walk around the centre on a lead just fine, and I'll walk out the back to our further away fields but I struggle out in the front car park as all of the people and cars scare me and I just want to get back to the safety of the rescue as soon as possible. My adopter will need to understand that I may never be a dog that enjoys going on walks but I will enjoy sunbathing in the garden and lots of cuddles and quality time with you. Things I do love: Having a brush! Venison! Chest, belly & butt scratches! Up until recently, I have been on a single protein venison diet as I have suspected allergies- my ears go red and I scratch them if I eat something I shouldn't. It does seem to be mild allergies and we are currently experimenting what triggers it the most. So far we have found that fish and lamb don't really agree with me. I am now eating a delicious hypo allergenic food that the humans bought me and I am doing great on it. They say it costs no more than normal dog food and I feel amazing on it. They say I have become very puppy like, giddy and silly, in the best possible way. I seem to make them laugh a lot <3 Dogs: I was very undersocialised with other dogs but have made progress with this and have shown I can have dog friends, both male and female, so although I need to live as an only dog I could have a visiting dog friend. I cannot live with cats. Full details of return will be given to potential adopters. I really hope to see your application! Sex: FemaleAge: 4 years oldSize: LargeBreed: Mixed breed\n\nIntroducing... sweet girl Carrie! Carrie's Story:Are you looking for a new best friend? Then look no further than Carrie!Carrie has recently arrived with us at Oakwood and with her sweet personality and kind nature, we are hoping she is not going to be with us too long before she finds her forever home.We were contacted about Carrie as she was being held in shelter in Romania where she was getting picked on by the other dogs. She is a large girl and so was in with lots of other large dogs, but this gentle girl wanted nothing more than to be out of that enclosure and to be with the volunteers that showed her kindness. We were told that the volunteers had spent a couple of hours with Carrie and when it was time to go back into the enclosure, she was shaking and holding on to them, pleading with her eyes, to not be put back. We were told that she was not coping at all and she is one of the dogs were they would expect to one day be notified that she had been attacked and didn't survive :(We couldn't let this gentle soul stay there any longer and agreed to accept her into our care.Carrie is very human and dog friendly but can be very nervous until she gets to know you. She is very scared of the world around her and is not yet ablet to walk on a collar and lead due to fear. She loves playing with dogs, loves her food, and is starting to copy the other dogs and play with toys <3\n\nWith other dogs: Carrie has been great with every dog that we have mixed her with so far. She can be very wary of them to start off with but once she starts to trust them, she is off running around the field playing chase with them.Unfortunately, due to her time in the shelter, Carrie will food guard from other dogs and so for this reason, must be rehomed as an only dog. With cats:Carrie is untested with cats therefore, she can not be rehomed with them\n\nCarrie is a young girl with lots of energy. She will thrive in a home that can give her lots of physical and mental stimulation as she may not be brave enough for lead walks for the first few weeks / months\n\nCarrie is very people oriented and will require training to build up her time alone. To begin with, she will need to be left as little as possible. In her kennel, she cries a lot so it's possible that she could develop separation anxiety in a home\n\nCarrie is not yet lead trained. This will come once she has settled into her new home and has built a bond with her new family\n\nCarrie has no form of basic training. This will all come in time once she has settled and learnt to fully trust her adopters\n\nClick the button below to start the adoption application process!

These places are a living hell and poor Chester spent his days making himself as small as possible and hiding away trying to be invisible. Luckily, he was spotted by the team at PPTF that took him off to their private shelter and from here, he was transferred to us at Oakwood Dog Rescue to begin his new life.Chester is a very timid boy that doesn't yet have any trust at all with people. He is going to need a calm and patient home with lots of love, time and understanding. With dogs: Chester has been amazing, playful and respectful of every dog that we have mixed him with at the rescue. With cats: Chester is not yet cat tested.\n\nChester is an active young dog and loved to play with his friends. His energy levels could increase in the home but we'd currently assess him as having moderate energy levels\n\nChester has never been left alone before and so any time alone may need to be slowly built up. Having at least one other dog around should help him feel more settled but he shouldn't be left for any more than 3-4 hours due to him never living in a home before and requiring training\n\nWe have not yet tried Chester on a lead due to being new into rescue\n\nChester has shown to have no form of basic training\n\nClick the button below to start the adoption application process!

The photos that we received of her, she was wide eyed and absolutely frozen in fear.Since arriving with us at Oakwood, she is still far too fearful to be handled however we have seen plenty of giddyness from her, especially when she has all of her doggy pals around her for confidence.Hazel is an absolute foody however, she is still too scared of us to take treats from our hands so we are building the trust by not pressuring her into this and allowing her to take treats that are being thrown to her instead.\n\nWith other dogs: Hazel has always lived around other dogs and we believe that it is absolutely necessary to live with another dog. Her confidence around people is so low that she is going to need a more confident dog in her life that will show her the ropes. She gets on well with all the dogs that we have mixed her with so far but the males are definitely her preferred choice, she particularly likes our youngsters Walter, Lewis and Prince <3With cats:Hazel has not been tested with cats. Due to her nervous nature, there is currently no safe way of testing her at the moment.\n\nDexter has shown moderate energy levels since being with us but this could increase as she settles into a home\n\nDexter has never lived in a home before. Sex: MaleAge: 1 year oldSize: LargeBreed: Mixed breed\n\nIntroducing.. Koda! [Wendy's brother - we would happily look at putting these 2 in a home together <3]Koda's Story:Koda [was Bob] is just a giant baby at only 1 year old.He was rescued from a shelter in Romania where his chances of ever getting a loving home where almost zero.Whilst in the shelter, he took solace with his sister Wendy but Wendy was given an opportunity to come to the UK and straight into foster via another charity so Koda was left behind in Romania missing his companion who he loved and trusted.A few weeks later, Koda was also offered a space here in the UK with another rescue. Sadly, as Koda was already travelling, the other rescue backed out leaving this boy with absolutely nowhere to go. We got the call and took him in as an emergency. As fate would have it, Wendy's foster placement only lasted a few hours and they kicked her out so we'd also taken her in meaning that Wendy was already with us and waiting to be reunited with her best friend in the world. They were SO happy to see each other <3Koda is a very shy boy and not yet ready for strokes however he loves his food and has no hesitation about running up to us and getting whatever tasty treats he can from us. We don't think he's too far off from having those first tickles from us but he gains a lot of his confidence from Wendy and being around other dogs.\n\nWith other dogs: Koda has always lived around other dogs and we believe he would do best to live with another dog. Female and of similar size, or larger than Koda are the only dogs we could consider. If Koda was to go as an only dog, progress regarding his confidence would be considerably slower. He really benefits from having another dog around him. We've mixed him with dogs of all shapes and sizes, old and young, he has been great with all of them. With cats:Koda has not been tested with cats. Due to his nervous nature, there is currently no safe way of testing him at the moment.\n\nKoda has shown low / moderate energy levels since being with us but this could increase as he settles into a home\n\nKoda has never lived in a home before. They were really struggling and it was unlikley that any where going to make it. They all had such gentle natures and wanted no trouble. The other 2 dogs were lucky enough to be offered a rescue space quickly but poor Millie had nowhere to go and her future was not looking good.We were asked if we could take her and after seeing her clinging on to one of the volunteer shelter workers, we couldn't say no so off she went for all of her tests and she was soon cleared to jump on the happy bus to the UK where she could begin her new life.\n\nWith other dogs: Millie has been great with every dog that she has met. She's polite, playful and respects boundaries. She has lots of dog friends that she hangs out with but she's just as happy spending all of her time with her people too. She's not dependant on other dogs. With cats:Millie is not yet cat tested although with her gentle nature, we will be cat testing her as soon as she's settled in as we don't see there being an issue.\n\nAs Millie is still settling in, she's making the most of any second she can get with us so we've not yet been able to assess her energy levels. Pudding!!Pudding's Story:The first we ever saw of Pudding was a few second long video of him in a kill shelter in Romania. It extremely loud, extremely overcrowded and Pudding was skin and bone pinned to the back of a small wooden kennel with his friend Coco, he was shaking with absolute fear, it was absolutely heartbreaking!Unfortunately, we had no space to take Pudding in straight away but as soon as we were able to, we got him straight onto a transport van to the UK.Pudding is still very skinny and very fearful. He's being fed 4 small meals a day whilst we slowly build him up and he'll be given all the time that he needs to learn to trust us and hopefully start to finally feel safe.\n\nWith other dogs: Puddings only comfort in life is other dogs. They are the only thing that he's been able to rely on and not had to fear. He will need to be adopted into a home with at least one other dog, one that is kind, playful and will show him the way in life. He wouldn't cope in a home without another dog from comfort. With cats:Pudding is far too fearful of to be able to put a collar and lead on him to be able to safely cat test him so for the time being, we will be looking for a home for him without a resident cat in the home.\n\nPudding is still very shut down at the kennels and so we're unable to get a true read of what we think his energy levels will be\n\nAs Pudding will need to be adopted to a home where there is at least one other dog, we believe he'd be fine to be left for around a 4 hour period.\n\nPudding is still absolutely terrified and so is a long way off from starting lead training\n\nPudding has no form of basic training. Sex: MaleAge: Almost 10 years oldSize: LargeBreed: Mixed breed\n\nIntroducing.. Ralph!Ralph's Story:Our handsome boy Ralph, where do we start with his story..Ralph was rescued back in March 2021 from a kill shelter in Romania. He was adopted shortly afterwards but was returned 12 days later. Ralph was a very nervous boy and he needed time to settle in and feel safe, something that he sadly he was not given.Shortly afterwards, he was offered a place at a different rescue as they believed that he'd be snapped up quickly and this would give us a space to rescue another dog that was facing euthanasia.Unfortunately, Ralph was overlooked time and time again and spent a very long time at this other rescue. They decided to give him another chance elsewhere and knew he'd thrive in a different environment with lots of new dogs to play with.Ralph became very attached to the staff and started being a bit naughty with the other dogs, warning them off and not letting them near his human friends. This behaviour started getting worse and so Ralph came back to Oakwood to see if he could reset himself and start enjoying being around dogs again. So far, he has made lots of dog friends that he loves spending his days with but we don't interact with him whilst he is with them just to prevent any previous issues from arising.Ralph will be staying with us for the foreseeable future and we will actively be looking for the best retirement home for him.Ralph has never had his own home and family before which is just heart breaking so we need to make sure we find the perfect forever home for him. Could this be you?\n\nWith other dogs: Ralph has always been amazing with other dogs however he has been known to warn off other dogs when he is around people that he loves. He will absolutely be able to have dog friends when in a home but from the behaviours that have been witnessed at the previous rescue, we are unable to adopt him to a home with other dogs already residing there. With cats:Ralph is untested with cats however, as he had issues with other dogs around his people, we wouldn't risk a cats safety by placing him in a home with one as it is likely he would also tell a cat off too.\n\nRalph has shown to have moderate energy levels.\n\nRalph doesn't show any signs of separation anxiety however his time alone in a home should be slowly built up to ensure he feels safe before he is left alone for longer periods\n\nRalph is not yet lead trained, we will start working on this once he has settled in\n\nRalph knows basic commands\n\nClick the button below to start the adoption application process!

Sunny, a 4 years old male Dalmatian available for adoption from Oakwood Dog Rescue in East Riding of Yorkshire

Sunny

BreedDalmatian

Sex: MaleAge: 4 years oldSize: Medium/LargeBreed: Mixed Breed\n\nIntroducing... Sunny! Sunny was originally born in Romania and rescued from a public kill shelter by another charity. Unfortunately, the home they found him didn't work out so he has come to us to try and find him his second chance at happiness.About Sunny:Sunny was born in Romania and travelled across to the UK as a young pup. He spent roughly 1 year in a home before we were contacted to say they could no longer keep him.Sunny is a quirky boy, he is anxious and will greet people with a toothy dalmation-like smile. This is friendly but it does show us that he can be worried at times. He will create a brilliant bond with the people that he learns he can trust. He becomes super excited when some of our volunteers come in for their shift and all he wants to do is spend time his with them! When Sunny knows you, he is a very affectionate boy and enjoys a good tickle. He can be worried at times about new people and so we have been gradually introducing him to more volunteers on shift.Sunny absolutely loves his walks but over the months he has got more worried with strangers and traffic and can react by barking at them. We have been working on this and we have got him to the point were he can go for a long perioud of time with no reactions or he will look at the things he'd normally kick off at - but then look back at his handler for a little treat for being brave and not reacting in any way. He is a very intelligent boy but really has started to lack in confidence, he just needs to learn that not everything is out to hurt him and that he is now safe with his handler / new owner. This is all a work in progress though and training will need to continue with his new family.Sunny does have a very basic level of training and will give paw and sit for treats, he also knows how to 'touch' and give eye contact when you say his name. He seems to enjoy training a lot so we highly recommend that his potential adopter continues this with him as it does seem to give him extra confidence. Unfortunately, Sunny does also have some guarding issues. It's almost like pure panic sets in if he believes you're going to make him do something that he doesn't want for example: moving him off the sofa or if he thinks you're going to take something away from him that he wants, this is especially the case with food.We never put him in these situations at the rescue but he will still protect what he enjoys. He will give you all of the signals to tell you that he is uncomfortable with the situation, he needs someone that will listen to those signals and not push him into thinking he has to take action because he hasn't been listened to.Someone with experience with dogs with guarding issues would be a huge bonus however a behaviourist would also be of a huge benefit to give Sunny the best possible start of settling into a new home.\n\nWith other dogs: Sunny can get very excited to meet playful and friendly dogs and he's turned out to be one of our best dogs to mix the others with in kennels. He can be too much for some quieter dogs due to his very energic play style.Sunny has lots of dogs at the rescue that he loves going out for walks with and tends to enjoy meeting other dogs out and about although the occasional dog, he can be reactive too, especially in tact males. Sunny has displayed some guarding behaviour around toys and food and therefore will benefit from living as an only dog, but can have dog friends outside of the home when he has settled.Sunny is a candidate for Foster with a view to Adoption. This process is very similar to adoption, the applicant must have the intention to adopt Sunny and will be required to reserve him, the adoptions team will provide the applicant and Sunny lots of support whilst he is settling into the home. Foster is to last around 4 weeks, and after this time, if he is settling well the adoption will commence. Sunny has displayed some guarding behaviours in his previous home, and so an experienced owner that is happy to take on advice from staff will be brilliant for him.Sunny is a dog that has a lot of love to give and we want nothing more than to see him succeed and live a happy life in his forever home. He may require multiple meets with an applicant before reservation can go ahead.Medical information:Sunny underwent surgery April 2022 for cruciate disease and luxating patella in his hind left leg. He was on cage rest for 12 weeks. This was such a big thing for Sunny. It was so important that his mind was kept active during this stage to prevent him getting bored and acquiring any behavioural issues. Time, patience, love and care is what this boy needs. He did so well and we are really proud of him for it.It is possible that Sunny may require surgery on the other knee too however, he is doing great at the moment and we are working to give him daily walks to keep up his muscle mass. Best case scenario is that there will be no need for more su

BreedCrossbreed

Sex: FemaleAge: Approx 1 yearSize: LargeBreed: Mixed breed\n\nIntroducing.. wonderful Wendy! [Koda's sister - we would happily look at putting these 2 in a home together <3]Wendy's Story:Wendy is a worried, young dog that has had a really tough start in life. She was rescued from a Romanian shelter where she'd spent her life growing up with her brother, Bob [now Koda - also now with us at Oakwood]. Wendy was offered space with a rescue over in the UK and, as upsetting as it was to split the siblings, it was believed that they could cope without each other and the opportunity for Wendy to start a new life in the UK was a rarity so it had to be taken up.After a long trip from Romania to the UK, Wendy was placed into a foster home [via the charity that had accepted her]. Unfortunately, the foster carers left poor Wendy alone for more than 6 hours on her first day and in a panic, she ripped up their lino and they immediately wanted rid!She went to the rescue that had accepted her but she was so scared and was trying to escape her areas to get to the other dogs. Wendy has only every known dogs her whole life and they are her safety blanket, understandably, she wanted to be with them to feel safer than it felt to be alone, especially after the past few days that she had just endured. The rescue said that they couldn't keep her and that she needed to leave straight away. They said she was broken and they would send her back to Romanian. Luckily, the charity that organised Wendy's travel to the UK over stepped in, they put Wendy into boarding for the night and then called us to see if we could help. We'd just had a dog rehomed the night before and so we had a space available for her. We jumped in the car and drove a 5 hour round trip to collect the frightened and confused soul.Oakwood will be Wendy's last stop now before she goes on to her forever home, however long this may take to find.\n\nWith other dogs: So far, Wendy has shown that her confidence really grows when she is around other dogs. Although we are still not able to touch Wendy, when she is with all of her doggy friends, her whole demeaner changes and she is so much happier, she has even started coming over for little sniffs of the staff when the other dogs are there to back her up.We believe that Wendy will need to live with another dog as she completely shuts down when she isn't around one, preferably a male dog. With cats:Wendy is untested with cats. We need to work on being able to handle her and have her be confident enough to have a collar and lead on to be able to take her for cat testing.\n\nWendy is currently quite shut down due to being so timid. She is a young dog that has a lot of confidence to gain and once settled, she could have moderate to high energy levels\n\nWe believe that with another dog, Wendy would be fine to be left for 4-5 hours but time alone may need to be slowly built up.\n\nWendy is not yet lead trained, she's still far too timid to let us attempt this yet\n\nWendy has no form of basic training. This will all come in time once she has settled and learnt to fully trust her adopters\n\nClick the button below to start the adoption application process!
