About West Wales Poundies

West Wales Poundies was founded in 2007 after its founder stepped in to help two Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppies facing euthanasia in a local pound. What began as an urgent effort to save a small number of at-risk dogs quickly grew into a dedicated rescue focused on helping unclaimed pound dogs across West Wales. Working with a small but committed team, the charity has since rescued and rehomed hundreds of dogs that would otherwise have been put to sleep. West Wales Poundies continues to focus on giving vulnerable dogs a second chance at life through rescue, rehabilitation, and responsible rehoming.

Athena, a Unknown old female Foxhound available for adoption from West Wales Poundies in Wales

West Wales Poundies

Athena

Wales
SexFemale
AgeUnknown
BreedFoxhound

Athena is a Welsh Foxhound with quite a story behind her, and she deserves the right home to begin the next chapter. A few months ago, a kind local farmer got in touch to let us know about a hound she'd been spotting straying on nearby farmland for over four years, wild, wary, and impossible to get close to. Then came the discovery that changed everything: Athena had given birth to nine puppies in the farmer's barn. The farmer contacted us for help. After some incredibly patient coaxing, Athena was finally safely caught, and she and her little family were soon on their way to us. You could hardly blame her for looking relieved. Her puppies are now finding their own homes, and it's finally Athena's turn. The transformation since she arrived has been remarkable. She came to us thin, exhausted and frightened. Now she happily greets the people she knows, loves her time out in the field, and has really come to enjoy human company. She is still understandably cautious around strangers, but she has come such a long way. Athena is looking for a quiet, understanding home, with patient people who appreciate that she has spent the last four or five years fending for herself, and that adjusting to home life will take time. She has never lived in a house before, so everything will be new to her. She would benefit from living with a calm, settled dog she can take her cues from, and she'd suit teenagers or adults rather than young children. She's a big girl at around 35kg, walks well on the lead, but isn't yet comfortable in busy or built-up areas. As a hound she won't ever be safe off lead in open spaces, though she does stick close to the people she trusts, but you must be mindful of her breed. Athena is a quiet, gentle soul who has already shown just how much she's capable of. Given the right home and a little time, we think she'll be a wonderful companion.

BreedCrossbreed

Bambi is a very pretty 3y.o cross breed who arrived with us as an unclaimed stray. This adorable girl loves everyone, she is definitely a ā€˜people’ dog and whether she knows you or not you’ll have the same enthusiastic welcome!! Bambi is a large Bullbreed cross, she can be strong to start her walk but soon settles. She isn’t reactive on the lead but isn’t great with other dogs so will need to be an only dog and also no cats. She can live with children over 10y.o. Bambi’s favourite thing is to snuggle up on the sofa with a human, she much prefers doing this to going for a walk!!! People really are her everything Bambi travels well in the car and she enjoys going for a jolly! She enjoys playing ball in the field but refuses to bring it back! All in all Bambi is looking for that special someone to share her life with, she has so much love to give and just needs that second chance.

Please meet Bentley who arrived with us a few months ago as an unclaimed stray. Now he is back to full health, is a good weight and is ready to find his forever human Bentley is young boy, only a year old and he’s chipped as a mini Dacci. He is the friendliest, most affectionate little Dacci I’ve met! He has none of the usual ā€˜traits’ and is a pleasure to have in your company! Bentley is super dog friendly mixing well with dogs of all shapes and sizes on and off lead. He can be rehomed as an only dog or with other dogs. He’s not mets cats here. He’d suit children over 8y.o. Bentley walks beautifully on the lead and travels quietly in the car. This little Dacci is an absolute delight, he adores everyone he meets, enjoys his walks and loves to snuggle up next to a human! For people not familiar with the breed please read up on them before committing. Someone is going to be so lucky to have Bentley in their life, what is there not to like?

Biscuit, a 4 years old male Lurcher available for adoption from West Wales Poundies in Wales

West Wales Poundies

Biscuit

Wales
SexMale
Age4 years
BreedLurcher

Today (20/05) marks 4 years, 208 weeks, 1460 days since Biscuit arrived at the rescue....and he is still here waiting for that special person to come along and choose him. That is a huge chunk of a dogs life, a life wasted through no fault of his own While all our long term dogs have found homes over the last year Biscuit is the only one left waiting. We have tried our best to find him a home to no avail, but we won’t give up and I won’t rest until he’s happy in a home. Biscuit arrived like so many others as an unclaimed stray, failed by his owner, abandoned without a second thought, discarded like rubbish. He isn’t a perfect dog but show me one that is, yes he does have quirks but we have rehomed dogs that have been far more complex than him who have gone on to live happy, contented lives. I can only assume it’s because of these quirks that he is still here, still waiting, still being overlooked but still hoping that one day he’ll be chosen and get his happy ever after I’m hoping we will be able to find Biscuit an understanding owner that will love him warts and all! His behaviour is far from extreme and could easily be managed, here at the kennels we understand him and he doesn't give us a minutes trouble. I’ll add some pointers below as to what kind of home he needs, his likes and dislikes, in the hope that he won’t have to wait in kennels much longer Biscuit will need to live with older children, over 16y.o. He wouldn’t be happy living with a dog but isn’t reactive to dogs on a walk. He can’t live with cats. He walks beautifully on the lead, he isn’t strong and doesn’t pull. Biscuit loves long walks and would literally walk all day. He isn’t a dog with oodles of energy in the home, he is a very calm boy who settles quickly once he's been exercised. He’s a very quiet gentle boy who is very loving. Now for the quirks! Biscuit doesn’t like anyone near his food bowl when he is eating, he prefers to be left alone to eat. He can guard his bowl after finishing but soon loses interest and will wonder off leaving you to collect the bowl. He doesn’t like being picked up. Lastly he doesn’t like having his feet touched! That is it. Biscuit is walked by all the volunteers at the rescue, to us he isn’t classed as a ā€˜difficult’ dog, he just has bad habits like the rest of us. All he needs is a chance, someone to open their heart and home to this very special boy who has wasted so much of his life in kennels. He’s a little greyer in the muzzle now since he first arrived, please help us make his wish come true

Chase, a 10 years old male Lurcher available for adoption from West Wales Poundies in Wales

West Wales Poundies

Chase

Wales
SexMale
Age10 years
BreedLurcher

Please meet Chase one of our latest unclaimed strays.. This big handsome lad arrived in excellent condition and we are pretty sure he was someone’s pet. Chase is as I said on the larger side, he has the sweetest temperament and is everyone’s friend. He walks beautifully on the lead and trots calmly by your side. He loves nothing more than a good run in our enclosed field and he’s quite impressive when he’s at full speed!! He is dog friendly mixing well with all dogs, due to his size I’d say he’d be better suited to medium to large dogs. He will not be rehomed with cats. He can live with children 10y.o and above. Chase is an adorable boy who aims to please, he welcomes everyone enthusiastically and wants to be everyone’s friend. He really will make someone a cracking companion

Dexter, a 6 months old male Collie available for adoption from West Wales Poundies in Wales

West Wales Poundies

Dexter

Wales
SexMale
Age6 months
BreedCollie

Dexter is a beautiful 6 month old Border Collie pup who arrived with us as an unclaimed stray. We are the fourth home he’s had in his short life, which is incredibly sad. Dexter is well socialised, well behaved and we can see no reason why he has been passed around so much. He knows all the basic commands, walks well on the lead, and really is a pleasure to be around. Dexter is currently in foster with a variety of other dogs and mixes well with them all. He is polite and respectful, both on and off lead. He is a typical Collie pup and can get a little overexcited at times, but that is to be expected. He enjoys playing with his friends in our enclosed field and loves snuggling up on the sofa in the evenings. Dexter travels well in the car and loves going on adventures. He would suit an active home that can provide plenty of exercise as well as mental stimulation. He isn’t the sort of dog who will be happy with a quick five minute stroll around the block! He would benefit from ongoing training and someone willing to put the time and effort into helping him reach his full potential

Jack, a 8 years old male Labrador available for adoption from West Wales Poundies in Wales

Jack

Wales
SexMale
Age8 years
BreedLabrador

Jack is a big lad and trust me I should know as he insists on climbing onto my lap. He’s a super friendly boy who adores everyone he meets! He loves playing ball but bringing it back is a bit hit or miss!! He’s super dog friendly, he happily mixes with dogs of all shapes and sizes on and off lead. Jack has lived with cats, while he leaves them alone if they are in the house he will chase them in the garden! Jack walks well on the lead and travels quietly in the car. This super cuddly, rather large lap dog is a joy to have around, he’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face and will make someone a loyal companion He can be rehomed with children over 8y.o and would love an active home with no sheep in close proximity to the garden…just in case!

Jet, a 4 years old male Crossbreed available for adoption from West Wales Poundies in Wales

West Wales Poundies

Jet

Wales
SexMale
Age4 years
BreedCrossbreed

Please meet the very handsome Jet who arrived with us a few weeks ago. He was going to be PTS through no fault of his own, hence why we stepped in to offer him a second chance. Jet has been the most perfect gentleman since arriving here with us and has flown through his assessment with flying colours. He is a little nervous on first introductions but quickly warms to new people. He is a 4y.o Collie cross (we believe Collie x Lab) he’s taller than a collie and quite lean. He is the most loyal, faithful companion who chooses to stay close by your side wherever you go Jet is quite nervous meeting new dogs, he genuinely wants to interact but has no idea how. That said he happily goes out into our enclosed field in a mixed group and chooses to keep himself to himself. So if he’s to be rehomed with another dog he’d be best suited to a calm, respectful dog or he’d be just as happy as an only dog in the home. Jet has not met cats. He loves to play ball and is one of the cleverer ones who always brings it back!! He walks nicely on the lead once he settles and travels quietly in the car. I have a soft spot for this boy, to think his life was very nearly ended prematurely is heartbreaking He has the most comical facial expressions which never fails to put a smile on our faces and just wants to please He would suit an active family with teenagers and above.

Millie And Bella, a 9 years old female French Bulldog available for adoption from West Wales Poundies in Wales

West Wales Poundies

Millie And Bella

Wales
SexFemale
Age9 years
BreedFrench Bulldog

This delightful pair arrived with us a few months ago after their owner moved out of the property and left them behind. It seems they didn’t have a great life but are now lapping up the attention they are getting in their foster home! Millie the 9y.o Staffie is very petite and is super friendly. Bella the 5y.o Frenchie is the quieter of the two and she also adores everyone she meets. These two are bonded and spend all their time together so we are looking to rehome them as a pair. Millie has a few lumps on her which have been investigated by our vet and they are harmless fatty lumps. Both walk well on the lead, love their off lead time in our secure field where they like nothing more than chasing a ball! They are dog friendly and meet dogs politely, neither have met cats. Both love the car but Millie does the well known staffie squeal which is out of sheer excitement! She is quieter on the return journey! Their foster is very fond of them and says they are no trouble at all So they are looking for a home together, somewhere they will be spoilt rotten and given endless attention just as they deserve.
