Meet Staffordshire Bull Terrier Roxy: slightly senior in years, youthful in attitude, and shaped, at present, remarkably like a very affectionate coffee table. If you judged her purely by spirit, you’d assume Roxy was still in the spring of youth. She’s bright, loving, and full of life, with the kind of enthusiasm that makes everyone she meets feel instantly chosen. The only clue that she’s a senior girl is that wonderfully salt-and-pepper face, a distinguished frosting that says “wise older lady,” while the rest of her says, “Excuse me, I believe you were about to fuss me.”Roxy came to us through no fault of her own after her owner sadly passed away. She’s taken this huge change in her stride and has met everyone here with the same open-hearted friendliness, as if she’s decided the best way forward is simply to make more friends. And friends are very much Roxy’s thing. She is your classic lovely Staffy, everybody is welcome, everybody is adored, and if you have hands available for stroking, even better. Toys are all well and good, but her true favourite thing is people and being the centre of their attention. Now, a small but important matter: our girl is carrying rather a lot of extra timber. In very technical terms, Roxy needs to lose about half her body weight in chub. At the moment she’s less “sleek athletic terrier” and more “solid oak coffee table with feelings.”Because of the extra weight, Roxy isn’t especially keen on long walks just now. She’s happy to potter about, but anything too ambitious is not currently on her agenda. With time, patience, and a sensible weight-loss plan, we hope she’ll begin to enjoy longer strolls again and feel much more comfortable in herself. She’ll need someone kind but committed, someone who can withstand her highly polished snack negotiation tactics. Be warned Roxy can look at you as though she has never eaten a meal in her life. This is theatre. Award-worthy theatre. She’s been wonderfully non-reactive with every dog she’s passed, but as we don’t know whether she’s ever lived with another dog, we think she may be happiest as the only pet, mainly because Roxy seems rather fond of the idea that all love, admiration, and sofa space should belong exclusively to her.Roxy is looking for someone who sees past the extra pounds and straight to the enormous heart underneath. Give her a little help getting back into shape, and you’ll gain a loyal shadow, a devoted best friend, and for the time being, a coffee table with a wagging tail.2020 - 2026 Animal Concern Cumbria.
