About Dog Aid Scotland

Dog Aid Scotland is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) based in Edinburgh, dedicated to rehoming dogs using a home-from-home approach. Without kennel facilities, the charity supports owners in caring for their dog until a suitable new home is found, reducing the stress many dogs experience in kennels. This system allows dogs to move directly from their current home into their new one, helping ensure a smoother transition. Through careful matching and guidance, Dog Aid Scotland works to secure safe and loving homes while prioritising each dog’s wellbeing.

Chip And Archie

SexMale
Age8 years
BreedChihuahua

Chip (left) and Archie (right) are looking for a new home together. They would love a garden to play and relax in. They would prefer a quiet home and to have company most of the time. Both boys are 8 years old and will be covered by our Old Dog Scheme in their new home which means DAS can pay for any non-routine veterinary care they may require for the rest of their lives, within reason.*Both boys are shy – Chip is particularly worried around people and Archie is quite timid, so it will be good for them to have each other. Their new owners will need to be very patient with them, especially Chip. It would be ideal for their new owner to have experience with Chihuahuas.Chip will bark at visitors if in his crate but otherwise will just want to be petted. Chip is fine at the vets and is okay travelling in the car. He will bark at unfamiliar sounds around the house. He can bark often but will stop if told. He is fine to be left for a few hours. On walks, Chip wears a harness and does not really pull on the lead but his recall is poor. Chip is fine to be bathed and brushed. He has been to boarding kennels before with no problems. Chip would love a home that can give him lots of attention, he loves cuddles. Chip needs to be taken on more walks/outings to be socialised more, in stages of course. His new owner will need to go slowly with him, but Chip has a great personality and will be a close, loving companion.Archie is a bit timid too but he will let you pet him and he is fine afterwards. He will bring you a toy sometimes too. He is quite a lap dog and loves lots of cuddles. Archie is fine at the vets and does not bother with other dogs. Archie wears a harness on walks and is good on the lead and seems to have okay recall. Archie loves a treat, he smiles when you give him one! He can be left alone for a few hours. He is fine at travelling in the car and is happy to be picked up as he is too small to jump in. Archie has been to boarding kennels before and enjoyed it. He tolerates a bath. Archie is scared of raised voices so would like a quiet home.Chip and Archie are loving, affectionate and well behaved. Their new owners need to have the time to give them the attention and patience they require. Please apply for them if you think you can give these lovely boys the best home.*OLD DOG SCHEME: Dog Aid Scotland’s Old Dog Scheme covers dogs rehomed at 8 years old or above. This means that we will cover costs for veterinary care for the dog for the remainder of their life within reason. We do not cover costs for routine treatments such as vaccinations, worming and flea treatment. If the dog requires special dietary food we will contribute 50% of the cost. This will alleviate the worry of the financial implications taking an older dog into your home. Older dogs make great pets! Why not consider an older dog?

Maisie, a 6 years old female Chihuahua x Shih Tzu available for adoption from Dog Aid Scotland in Scotland

Dog Aid Scotland

Maisie

Scotland
SexFemale
Age6 years
BreedChihuahua x Shih Tzu

Maisie is a very sensitive girl and will need an experienced and patient owner. Her new home should ideally be quiet and must have a secure garden. Maisie would prefer company most of the time.Maisie is a bit nervous when first meeting new people, she will bark and pace when visitors come to the home. She can also be a bit snappy if people are overly familiar too quickly. But once she has had time to assess the situation and everyone has settled down, she relaxes and wants to sit on laps and get some attention. She is the same when meeting strangers outside; she usually ignores them if there is no interaction but if people stare at her or approach her too fast, she will bark at them. She is nervous of other dogs, especially when passing them on the street. If they get too close too fast she will bark at them. However, if she is introduced to a dog in a calm setting and given time to understand they are friendly, she will relax. On the other hand, Maisie actually loves cats and is used to living with one. Maisie pulls on the lead and wears a harness. Her recall is good if there are no distractions, but she can get confrontational with other dogs when off the lead and her recall fails. We hope her new home could continue her training as Maisie is bright and responds well to commands and enjoys treats as rewards – she can do a ‘spin’ trick very well.Maisie can be left alone for a few hours but does have some separation anxiety; she will bark and whine when initially left alone. Maisie likes to shadow people around the home but is also used to sleeping alone downstairs. She does not like her eyes or snout being touched. She is scared but tolerates going to the vets or groomers. She is okay with being bathed and brushed. Maisie is very good with children, although she can be scared if they approach too quickly. Due to this and her nerves around being touched in certain places, we recommend any children in her new home are aged 10 and over.Maisie is a good guard dog and will bark at unfamiliar sounds and deliveries etc to the front door – her current owners find her barking is reduced by blocking Maisie’s access to see the front door or front windows. Maisie would love to have her own garden to relax in and feel safe. She is scared of travelling in the car but will tolerate it and she prefers to sit on someone’s lap. She loves being up high, such as on chairs or sofas, and does not settle as well on the floor.Maisie is at her happiest when she is around her people, being part of their day, or sitting on a lap getting cuddles. She has so much unconditional love, loyalty and affection to give. Please apply if you have the experience and patience for shy little Maisie.

Scrappy

Scotland

Scrappy has been an assistance dog for many years but is now ready to retire to a patient, relaxed home. He is looking for company most of the time and a garden to play or relax in. He is not used to having stairs in the home.Scrappy has a grass allergy and takes daily medication and is older so has some routine age related issues. This condition would be covered under our Food and Veterinary Fund, as well as any other non-routine treatment covered under the Old Dog Scheme as Scrappy is over 8 years old.*Scrappy likes to decide when he wants to be petted and by whom. He is not cuddly with everyone. He does not seem to like tall, bearded men very much and is scared when children run up to him. Scrappy does not like to be touched on his ears. He is fine to be left alone for a few hours at home. He can bark if someone is at the front door or while travelling in the car. He is fine to be washed and brushed. As a trained assistance dog, Scrappy does not pay much attention to other dogs when on walks but likes to chase cats or go for a good sniff. If off-lead, he will surrender his toy to a larger dog that comes along, Scrappy is not confrontational. But he does not like dogs that would try to jump on him such as younger dogs. Scrappy wears a harness and walks well. He is used to running free in secure fields. Scrappy has been trained to wear a muzzle, if needed. He likes a good walk but will set his own pace (and sometimes the length).Scrappy loves playing fetch with a ball (with rest breaks), playing searching games and sniffing parcels. He enjoys his own section of the sofa where he snoozes, and likes to have his own blanket to snuggle up with. He does not like to be woken up before 7am and likes to steal any food he can! Please apply for Scrappy if you have the best retirement home for him.*FOOD AND VETERINARY TREATMENT FUND: This fund allows Dog Aid Scotland to cover costs of pre-existing conditions once a dog has been rehomed.
