About Islay Dog Rescue

Islay Dog Rescue is an independent dog rescue charity founded in 2010 with a mission to give at-risk dogs a fair chance at loving homes. Established in response to the challenges faced by suitable adopters being turned away elsewhere, the charity takes an inclusive, case-by-case approach to rehoming, carefully matching each dog to the right home rather than applying rigid criteria. Islay Dog Rescue focuses on rescuing dogs from UK pounds and partner organisations, as well as supporting international rescue efforts in countries such as Romania and Bosnia, where dogs face particularly harsh conditions. Every dog is fully assessed, receives veterinary care, and is supported through foster care where needed before being placed into a safe, permanent home.

Captain is a handsome, approximately 4-year-old German Shepherd with a striking presence and plenty of personality. Found abandoned on the streets of England, his early history is unknown, but since being taken in by Islay Dog Rescue, he has made great progress and is now ready to find a loving, permanent home.Weighing 34.6 kg, Captain is a large and strong dog who will certainly turn heads. Despite his size, he still shows flashes of playful, puppy-like behaviour. He walks well on the lead most of the time, though he can occasionally pull if something grabs his attention. Since arriving in rescue, he has improved significantly in both his lead walking and overall manners, and continued training will help him reach his full potential.Captain thrives on human companionship and is an affectionate boy who enjoys cuddles and attention. That said, he also has a playful side—give him a ball or a favourite toy, and he’ll happily focus all his energy on playtime.Due to his size and strength, Captain would be best suited to an adult-only home. He generally gets along with other dogs but has shown some reactivity, so he may be happiest as the only dog in the household. Alternatively, careful introductions and time spent with a potential canine companion would be essential before adoption. He has also shown reactivity towards cats and would therefore need a cat-free home.Captain is looking for a stable, secure environment with an owner committed to continuing his training and helping him become the best version of himself. In return, he will offer loyalty, affection, and plenty of fun.He is fully vaccinated, microchipped, and treated for parasites and neutered. His adoption fee is £400, which helps rescue other dogs in need.Could you be the one to give Captain the home he deserves?

Meet Elsa, a beautiful 4-year-old Border Collie who recently came into the care of Islay Dog Rescue after changes in her family’s circumstances meant they could no longer care for her.Elsa is an intelligent, high-energy girl who loves to play and adores her toys. Like many collies, she thrives when both her body and mind are kept busy, so she would greatly benefit from ongoing enrichment such as nose work, agility, problem-solving games, and interactive play. When meeting new dogs, Elsa can initially be reactive until she gets to know them. We believe she could do well living with a confident male dog who can match her energy levels and help build her confidence.Elsa’s lead training is currently a work in progress. She can pull on lead and will bark at passing cars, although she does not lunge. Her future adopter will need to be committed to continuing her training and helping her build calm, positive associations in these situations. She is highly food motivated, with a particular love of chicken—something that has been very useful in her ongoing training.Elsa would be best suited to an adult-only home.It is currently unknown whether Elsa could live with cats, but cat testing can be arranged if required.Vet visits are particularly challenging for Elsa, as she becomes extremely fearful, which has led to reactive behaviour in that environment. We are currently working on gentle desensitisation to help make future visits less stressful, but this will require time, patience, and understanding. We would strongly recommend her adopter speaks with their vet in advance of any appointments to put supportive measures in place.

BreedBedlington Terrier

Jasper is a 8-year-old Bedlington Terrier, weighing approximately 8.9kg. He came into Islay Dog Rescue after his previous owners were no longer able to care for him. He is currently in foster, where he settled in quickly and has been getting on well with the resident dog, as well as other dogs he meets. He does like to playfully chase the resident cat, so would be best suited to a home without cats, or with very dog-savvy cats.Jasper is friendly and affectionate, while also appreciating his own space. He can display resource guarding around his food, so any adopters will need to be mindful of this and continue working on it with him. Due to this behaviour, he is not suitable to live with children. He is house trained and walks well on a lead. Jasper could live in a flat, provided he receives three regular walks per day he does not toilet indoors. He can be left alone for up to four hours and enjoys having the radio on for company.Jasper previously lived with a female owner and clearly has a soft spot for the ladies, though he has no issues living with or meeting men.Do you have space in your home and heart for this fun little character? He is fully vaccinated, microchipped, treated for parasites, assessed, and neutered. His adoption fee is ÂŁ400, which goes directly towards helping to save the lives of dogs just like him.

Meet Leonie – A Fragile Soul Learning About the WorldLeonie is a beautiful 2-year-old Romanian crossbreed with a very gentle nature and a story that tugs at the heart. She was born in a shelter and has grown up knowing very little beyond the shelter environment.Because of this, Leonie finds the world around her overwhelming and unfamiliar. She is an extremely nervous girl who is still trying to understand that new experiences can be safe. There isn’t a bad bone in her body—when she feels frightened, she simply freezes rather than trying to run or react. At present, Leonie is not confident enough to leave the safety of the rescue centre. She prefers to stay in the environment she knows, where she feels secure and protected. For this reason, she is not yet ready for adoption. However, Leonie is beginning her journey towards confidence. She is able to meet visitors in our enrichment room—a calm, controlled space where she can gently start to experience new people and situations at her own pace. With time, patience, and positive experiences, we are hopeful that Leonie will slowly begin to build her confidence and trust.Leonie will need very special adopters in the future—people who truly understand nervous dogs and are prepared to give her all the time she needs, without pressure or expectation. For now, Leonie is taking small but important steps forward. She is fully vaccinated, microchipped, neutered and up to date with parasite treatments.

Milan

BreedWest Highland White Terrier

Milan is a 3-year-old crossbreed from Romania, weighing around 21kg. This medium-sized boy has been through a lot, but his gentle spirit and heart warming “smile” shine through. He can be a little sensitive and nervous when meeting new people or facing unfamiliar situations. However, once he learns to trust you, Milan becomes incredibly affectionate and loves spending time with his humans. He has a playful side too—he enjoys toys, games, and walks beautifully on a lead.Milan gets along well with other dogs and, with careful introductions, could happily live with a canine companion. He has met a cat before and showed little interest until it ran—then the chase instinct kicked in—so a cat-free home (or one with a very dog-savvy cat) would be best. It’s unlikely Milan has lived in a home before, so he may need support with toilet training and settling into domestic life. Due to his initial wariness, he would be best suited to a calm home with no children or older, dog-aware children.Despite everything he’s been through, Milan is a happy, loving soul. With patience, reassurance, and time to adjust, he will blossom into a loyal and devoted companion. He is fully vaccinated, microchipped, and treated for parasites and neutered. His adoption fee is £400, which helps rescue other dogs in need.Could you be the calm, patient, and loving home Milan is waiting for?
