About Manchester and Cheshire Dogs Home

Manchester & District Home for Lost Dogs is one of the UK’s oldest dog rescue charities, founded in 1893 to address the growing number of stray dogs in Manchester. Operating from its original inner-city Manchester site alongside the purpose-built Cheshire Dogs’ Home, the charity provides care, rehabilitation, and rehoming for stray and unwanted dogs across Greater Manchester and Cheshire. The organisation offers specialist facilities for vulnerable dogs, including those requiring intensive medical care, pregnant bitches, and dogs that struggle in traditional kennel environments. Committed to responsible dog welfare, the charity vaccinates and microchips all dogs in its care, promotes low-cost neutering and education, and operates a strict policy of never euthanising a healthy dog.

Alizari, a 5 years old female German Shepherd available for adoption from Manchester and Cheshire Dogs Home in Greater Manchester

Manchester and Cheshire Dogs Home

Alizari

Greater Manchester
SexFemale
Age5 years
BreedGerman Shepherd

This beautiful girl is Alizari. She is looking for a patient and understanding home where she can continue to grow. When she first arrived in our care, she was timid and nervous around new people and situations. However, with time, consistency, and gentle handling, she has really come out of her shell with our staff. Once she trusts you, she absolutely loves fuss, attention and being close to her people. She will require some basic house training in her new home, so her adopters should be prepared to invest time and patience to help her settle into a routine. She appears to be under-socialised with other dogs and can be reactive in certain situations. For this reason, we are seeking an experienced owner who understands canine body language and is confident managing and continuing her training. Any introductions to other dogs should be carefully managed. Despite her challenges, she is a lovely dog with so much potential. In the right home, with continued guidance and reassurance, we believe she will make a loyal and devoted companion. If you have experience with German Shepherds and can offer a calm, structured environment, this special girl could be the perfect addition to your home. She will need a private secure garden.Alizari will need to be the only dog in the home and cannot live with cats.As She came into the home as a stray we have no previous history on her so would prefer any children in the home to be 14+ years. If you have a holiday booked in the next 3 months please wait until you return to apply for a dog.*Applications that are successful will be provided with further information on each dog to the best of the charity’s knowledge.

Bella

BreedCrossbreed

Bella is a typical young pup who is full of energy and loves everyone she meets. She is full of energy and always jumping around ready for her next adventure. Bella needs an active home with someone that can take her on lots of adventures to keep her physically and mentally stimulated. Bella has got a lot of love to give and doesn’t shy away from showing you by jumping up and demanding attention. Bella is currently undergoing some basic training and socialisation to help her become more polite in different situations. This will need to be continued once she goes home. Bella loves playing with (and destroying) her toys and loves a tasty treat.Bella can be rehomed with children 5 years and older – Subject to a successful meet.Bella is currently learning how to interact and play with dogs appropriately but has been improving every day. She loves all of the dogs she meets and just wants to play. She can possibly be rehomed with another dog that can match her energy levels and be a good role model – subject to a successful meet.We are unsure how Bella would react around cats. Please don’t apply for a dog if you are going on holiday within the next 3 months.

Manchester and Cheshire Dogs Home

Ben

Greater Manchester
SexMale
Age2 years
BreedCrossbreed

Ben came into our care as a stray so we don’t have any background information on him. He was very nervous and reserved when he first arrived but his confidence has slowly been building. Once he gets to know you he is a sweet excitable boy. We are unsure if he has ever lived in a home before so would need time to settle and get to know his new surroundings. He is unsure walking on a lead so basic lead work training and commands would be a must for him. Due to his size and breed he would need an active home that is willing to take him on lots of adventures and provide enrichment to help keep his brain stimulated.Due to Ben being nervous when he first arrived we think that it would be best for him to go with children who are 16 years and over – Subject to a successful meet. Potential adopters need to be able to commit to multiple meets so he has chance to get to know you before going home.It would not be suitable for Ben to be rehomed with cats. Please don’t apply for a dog if you are going on holiday within the next 3 months.*Applicants that are successful will be provided with further information on each dog to the best of the charity’s knowledge

Bocko, a 4 years old male Greyhound available for adoption from Manchester and Cheshire Dogs Home in Greater Manchester

Manchester and Cheshire Dogs Home

Bocko

Greater Manchester
SexMale
Age4 years
BreedGreyhound

Bocko is an ex-racer who has always lived in kennels. He is a bouncy excitable boy who loves going out for walks and exploring. He is a tall boy that at times can take an interest in wildlife, due to being an ex-racer, so can pull on the lead occasionally. He is a friendly and affectionate boy who always says hi to staff and volunteers when he sees them. Bocko is after someone that can take him on adventures to explore and burn off his energy but he also wants somewhere that he can settle down and be comfortable after his walks. With the right family, this giddy boy will blossom into a devoted and entertaining companion who will bring endless smiles and laughter. We feel that he can be rehomed with children that are 12 years and over – subject to a successful meet.Bocko is currently paired and used to living with another greyhound in kennels. He has also interacted well with other dogs whilst on walks so we believe that he could be rehomed with another dog of a similar size and temperament – again subject to a successful meet.Due to Bocko being an ex-racer it wouldn’t be suitable for him to be rehomed with cats or small furries.*Applicants that are successful will be provided with further information on each dog to the best of the charity’s knowledge

Brandy, a 4 years old male Lurcher available for adoption from Manchester and Cheshire Dogs Home in Greater Manchester

Manchester and Cheshire Dogs Home

Brandy

Greater Manchester
SexMale
Age4 years
BreedLurcher

This handsome lad is Brandy. He is a lovely boy who is searching for an understanding home where he can continue to grow in confidence and enjoy his life to the fullest. He can be slightly nervous when meeting new people, but once he gets to know you, he thoroughly enjoys human interaction and loves a fuss. He forms good bonds with people and has plenty of affection to give. In kennels, he can be very vocal and has shown some kennel guarding behaviours, but once he is out he is more settled. He does have a tendency to jump up when excited and does forget how big he is, so he would benefit from continued training and consistent boundaries in his new home. He is a bright dog who responds well to positive guidance. Around other dogs, he prefers to have his own space and generally avoids close interactions. However, he is happy to participate in social walks alongside other dogs and walks calmy in their company. So we feel he would be best rehomed as the only dog in the home. Due to his breed traits and prey drive he cannot live with cats of small furries. This sweet-natured boy is looking for patient adopters who can provide ongoing training, understanding and plenty of love. He will need a private secure garden. As Brandy came into the home as a stray we have no previous history on him so would prefer any children in the home to be 14+ years. If you have a holiday booked in the next 3 months please wait until you return to apply for a dog.*Applications that are successful will be provided with further information on each dog to the best of the charity’s knowledge.

Meet our little gentleman Buddy! Unfortunately Buddy is Blind. As he came into us as a stray we are unsure if he was born like this or his eyes have been surgically removed. He lives his life to the fullest despite this. He is a very friendly boy who minds his own business. He is incredibly smart and a quick learner and picks up his environment very quickly. He loves going for walks and interacts very well with other dogs but can be quite humpy with them. He is a lovely affectionate boy who has adapted remarkably well to life without his sight and approaches the world with confidence. He may be able to live with another dog that would tolerate his humpy behaviour whilst his new adopter put training and management in place following a successful meet and greet. Prospective owners should understand the commitment involved in caring for a completely blind dog, previous experience would be preferred. In return you will gain a wonderful companion with a fantastic outlook on life. He would benefit from a private secure garden where he can safely have some off lead time.As Buddy came into the home as a stray we have no previous history on him so would prefer any children in the home to be 14+ years. We are unsure how Buddy would react around cats.If you have a holiday booked in the next 3 months please wait until you return to apply for a dog.*Applicants that are successful will be provided with further information on each dog to the best of the charity’s knowledge

Cali was a very nervous girl when she first arrived at the home, she came in as a stray so we don’t know much about her history. It has taken a lot of time and patience for Cali to show us her excitable, bubbly personality.
