Last week, a rescue transporter arrived at our shelter unexpectedly. With nowhere else to go except the high-kill shelter she originally came from, the transporter made a last-ditch plea for help. It was after hours… but our team refused to let her be sent back. We came together to open our doors and our hearts, giving Athena a safe place to land. Soon after, we learned that Athena is heartworm-positive — a diagnosis that adds significant cost and time to her path to recovery. Taking her in stretched our already limited resources, but turning her away simply wasn’t an option. Athena is now safe with us and looking for a foster or adopter to give her a place to recover.
