About Strays Without Borders

Strays Without Borders is a UK-registered non-profit dedicated to rescuing and rehoming vulnerable dogs, with a primary focus on those in Macedonia where abandonment, abuse and road accidents are widespread. Working in partnership with trusted local rescues, the organisation ensures dogs receive care, socialisation and rehabilitation before travelling to the UK. Dogs are rehomed nationwide with thorough home checks and ongoing support provided to fosterers and adopters. By fostering or adopting, supporters directly enable the charity to rescue and help even more dogs still waiting for their second chance.

Barbie’s rescue began heartbreakingly early in life. At just two months old, she was abandoned on the streets by irresponsible owners — a baby with no survival skills and no chance on her own. Her luck changed when two incredible women, who have been rescuing animals on the streets of Skopje for decades, found her and took her to safety. What was meant to be a short stay in kennels sadly turned into nearly three years of confinement — years that should have been filled with love, freedom, and family life. Despite this incredibly difficult start, Barbie’s spirit was never broken. She remains hopeful, gentle, and full of love, still believing that her forever family is out there somewhere. Now safely in foster care in Devon, Barbie is showing everyone just how wonderful she is. She is a very sweet, affectionate, and gentle girl with a loving nature and a playful side. She gets on beautifully with children, cats, and other dogs, and truly has love in her heart for everyone. She has adapted incredibly well to home life in the UK and continues to impress with her resilience and willingness to learn. Barbie is: Very affectionate and loving Fully house trained Intelligent — has learned to sit and lie down Food motivated, which has helped with training Walks beautifully off lead, sticks close, and checks in regularly Good recall (and improving all the time!) Loves playing with other dogs and plays very gently, especially with smaller dogs Calm in the home — enjoys walks and playtime but also loves to relax and nap Sleeps well through the night and settles nicely during the day She is friendly and sociable with dogs she meets and has coped very well staying with other rescue dogs, including over Christmas with her foster family. Barbie travels quietly and calmly in the car, even on long journeys (she’s managed four-hour trips with no issues). Although initially nervous of cars — likely due to her long journey to the UK — she quickly learned that they lead to fun adventures and now hops in happily on her own. She is comfortable walking through towns and around traffic and is gaining confidence every day. She can be slightly timid at night, but this is very minor and easily managed. She is currently working on separation training. While this is still early days, her adaptability suggests she will continue to improve with time and consistency. She already manages sleeping alone at night and settles well in her own company. Barbie would thrive in: A loving, active family who enjoy walks and spending time outdoors A home with or without another dog — she’s happy either way A family willing to continue gentle training and reassurance She has no aggressive behaviours and is a beautifully natured dog who simply wants to belong. Barbie is an absolute star. Gentle, playful, resilient, and full of love, she has endured far more than any dog ever should — yet she still trusts, still hopes, and still loves. She is now ready — and waiting — for the forever home she has always deserved

Bella, a 1 year old female Crossbreed available for adoption from Strays Without Borders in Somerset

Strays Without Borders

Bella

Somerset
SexFemale
Age1 year
BreedCrossbreed

Bella is a gorgeous 1-year-old puppy who has been thriving in her foster home! She could definitely live with children, though to be safe we’d suggest school age and above. Bella is best suited to active people, but she has absolutely no spatial awareness. Her new family will need to be steady on their feet, as she has been known to knock into legs when running and often darts across in front when going out into the garden. She has a very loving character and has blossomed from a scared puppy into a playful and curious young girl. She adores her big foster brother and is growing more confident on walks. Bella will need to be rehomed with another friendly dog, ideally in a rural or semi-rural area. She is spayed, up to date with her vaccinations and tests, and comes with full rescue back-up.

Bodi, a 3 years old male Crossbreed available for adoption from Strays Without Borders in Leicestershire

Strays Without Borders

Bodi

Leicestershire
SexMale
Age3 years
BreedCrossbreed

Bodi is looking for a new home. He is just over 2 years of age and currently lives in Leicestershire but can be rehomed in a different part of the country. Bodi was rescued from Macedonia as a puppy by another Rescue and at 6 months old was adopted by a family. Bodi is a large active strong boy who weighs approximately 27 kg and is the size of a Labrador but with longer legs. He is a nervous boy and because of this he can be reactive to other dogs on walks but is better on a longer lead where he is it less restricted. He is also nervous with visitors to the house he does not know sometimes leading him to snap. He is being rehomed because he has proved to be too strong for the family who adopted him. They also have 2 cats and he has proved to be not cat friendly. We are looking for an adopter who is physically fit and has previous experience of working with a large reactive dog. He should not be rehomed with cats or children but may benefit from living with a confident resident dog. A semi rural location would be preferable. We are sure that with the right adopter who has the knowledge and experience he could become a better version of himself. To adopt this big, beautiful dog please contact us.

Bugzy, a Unknown old male Crossbreed available for adoption from Strays Without Borders in Derbyshire

Bugzy

Derbyshire
SexMale
AgeUnknown
BreedCrossbreed

Little Bugzy is currently thriving in his foster home in Shirebrook! He has settled in rather amazingly, and has been clean in the house since day one. He gets on with his canine roommate as well and has been so happy to leave the street and kennel life behind. Bugzy currently is doing training and trying to get confidence while out on walks. He gets reactive when he is seeing other dogs although he is great at home with the dog he knows. He is improving every day, but anyone who adopts him will have to continue with the training to help him overcome his insecurities and be the best version of himself. At home he loves everyone and has been meeting with extended family members and seems to be winning everyone’s hearts! He is slowly still getting used to the cat in the family, but they have available space apart, so they don’t spend much time together. Bugzy has a deformity on one of his hind legs that he has been born with mostlikely. Meets and greets can be arranged after a successful application. Origin story:We saw a photo of a tiny, sad dog locked behind bars with the title “Will be euthanised – only one day left to find a rescue space.” That was the photo of Bugsy, a stray dog from Macedonia who had been taken to a public shelter because someone didn’t like him sleeping in the kindergarden’s yard. Everything about this screamed injustice, and we couldn’t allow a dog to pay with his life simply for sleeping in a public space, just because someone minded him.We took Bugsy to the kennels and, as we guessed, he turned out to be a gentle, calm little boy. He doesn’t bother anyone and is just happy to be alive and fed. Bugzy is a little bit reserved boy and would thrive in a calm environment, possibly a retired family who has experience with rescue dogs. He would prefer a calm home and a simple life. We truly hope to find him a forever home where he will never have to fear for his life again. A small bed, a couple of walks a day, some food, and love are all he will ever ask for. Bugsy is up to date with his vaccinations, neutered, and has rescue back-up.

Dora, a Unknown old female Labrador available for adoption from Strays Without Borders in Leicestershire

Dora

Leicestershire
SexFemale
AgeUnknown
BreedLabrador

Born May 2020, 23Kg, neutered, chipped, vaccinated, Lab mix female. She is a wonderful dog and has brought her owners lots of happiness. However they couldn’t keep her due to them planning a family and Dora not being suitable around kids. Since, Dora has spent 2 years in kennels waiting for someone to adopt her, without any success. She is incredibly clever, learns commands very quickly and LOVES to play! She is such a playful and happy girl and has her owners laughing every day with her cheeky personality. She travels well in the car, can be left at home alone. She used to enjoy playing with other like minded bouncy doggies, but since being in kennels has become quite reactive to other animals. She shows signs of fear based aggression and can be reactive to humans. Visitors can be managed once she knows people well, and she eventually does form close bonds with others outside of her family. She cannot be homed with children due to her reactivity and general bounciness. She is also very fearful of cats. Dora has undergone behavioural training for guarding food and spaces and has shown improvement with this. She’s an absolute joy, and anyone would be very lucky to have her. We are looking for a home with experienced dog owners who are able to manage fear reactivity. Dora needs to be homed as an only pet as she’s become reactive to dogs while in kennels. We would also prefer a calmer household in a rural/semi-rural environment for her. Multiple meets are necessary for Dora in the kennels in Blackpool.

Freya, a 3 years old female Crossbreed available for adoption from Strays Without Borders in Leicestershire

Strays Without Borders

Freya

Leicestershire
SexFemale
Age3 years
BreedCrossbreed

Looking for a Calm, Experienced Home Freya is a bright, quirky 3-year-old Kokoni mix (sheepdog/terrier type) with a personality you won’t forget. She was rescued as a puppy from the streets of Macedonia and has lived with us since she was 11 months old. Sadly, due to illness in our family, we’ve had to make the very difficult decision to find her a new, stable home where she can thrive. Freya is a special girl who has come a long way. When we first adopted her, she struggled with fear and had shown aggression in certain situations. Thanks to daily training and the support of behaviourists, she has progressed tremendously. She still has moments of anxiety, especially in unpredictable or high-stress environments, so she would do best in a calm, consistent home where she can feel safe and secure. She is full of character and charm – from her funny “circus paws” she does when she wants something, to her bold, loyal nature. She is fiercely attached to the people she trusts and loves to be close to them. Freya enjoys playing and running, though she’s fast and strong for short bursts (think collie!). She does resource-guard her food and treasures, and her herding instincts mean she likes to keep her family together – so little ones or chaotic environments aren’t ideal for her. Freya can be reactive to other dogs on walks, so introductions should be managed carefully, and we recommend she doesn’t live with cats. She’s used to human company and can be left for short periods, but she thrives with consistent attention and companionship. Health-wise, Freya has no hip sockets, but her muscles and tissues have compensated beautifully, and she moves and plays with confidence. She has a small patch on her head where her fur doesn’t grow, but it doesn’t bother her, and her amazing white “Teflon-like” coat stays bright and clean naturally. Freya isn’t a dog for everyone – she needs an experienced, patient, and loving person who can give her the calm and consistency she deserves. In return, she will offer loyalty, affection, and her endlessly unique personality. If you have the right home for Freya and are ready to meet her quirks and charms, she would love to hear from you.

Hazel, a 4 years old female White Swiss Shepherd Dog available for adoption from Strays Without Borders in Surrey

Strays Without Borders

Hazel

Surrey
SexFemale
Age4 years
BreedWhite Swiss Shepherd Dog

Hazel was rescued as a little fluffy puppy and sadly waited so long for a home that she spent her entire youth in Macedonian kennel. When she finally was adopted, it didn’t go well and she developed fear based reactivity. But she was lucky the perfect foster home came forward for her and with their experienced and dedicated training she has made huge development. The work with Hazel is still ongoing, but she is now ready for her forever home. Hazel has developed from a shy girl into a big personality who loves running around the house with her toys. She takes time to warm up to people, but once she gets to know you, she will be your best friend. She is loyal, loving and extremely intelligent. She loves cuddles and has a cheeky, playful personality. She is very obedient, and has learnt a lot of tricks which she is eager to show off. Being a typical shepherd dog, she loves to herd and instinctively protects her home. She bonds incredibly strongly with her ‘special person’, so becomes worried when left alone for too long. Hazel has developed from a shy girl into a big personality who loves running around the house with her toys. She takes time to warm up to people, but once she gets to know you, she will be your best friend This stunning girl is a large active dog and needs around two hours of walking (or equivalent exercise) a day, and regular training sessions to keep her mentally stimulated. She can live with a resident dog as long as they’re very confident and friendly as introductions can be a challenge. Although Hazel has made loads of progress with her reactivity she can still be nervous around strangers, and she is triggered by eye contact with people she doesn’t know. She is quite reactive towards dogs she doesn’t know, but becomes very friendly and playful with them after a few slow, careful meetings. The ideal home for Hazel is a calm adults only home with experienced people who will give her the training she needs to continue gaining confidence in the world. There must be a good size secure garden so she can enjoy being outside when weather is nice, and the location should not be too urban and have good, quiet walking areas nearby. Hazel can be potential bite risk in high-stress situations (most commonly when strange dogs are too close), so she needs a physically fit handler. She also may regress in new surroundings, so it’s crucial that her adopter has experience with proper handling of reactivity. Meeting her a couple of times will be recommended so she can get to know her new family before moving again. In the right hands, this beautiful girl has the potential to be the perfect dog! Spayed, microchipped and vaccinated. Lifelong rescue back up and adopter support provided.

Jake, a 3 years old male Labrador available for adoption from Strays Without Borders in Leicestershire

Strays Without Borders

Jake

Leicestershire
SexMale
Age3 years
BreedLabrador

Jakes adopters have come very far with him but it turns out he needs a quieter home and we are looking for the perfect forever home or foster place for this black diamond. This gourgeous boy is an incredibly loyal and affectionate dog, who loves a fuss and wants to be close to his owners. He loves to play tug and chase balls around the garden. Whilst he does tend to resource guard some toys/items, he has made good progress in reducing this behaviour through developing trust with this owners and understanding that he doesn’t need to guard. Feeding by hand has been a good way to develop trust and continuing this will help him gain further confidence over time. He can be cautious of new people, but through proper and gradual introductions he is able to build a good level of trust and has improved so much since arriving in the UK. He needs to have his own quiet space to decompress and relax after meals; he is crate trained and will sleep there at night and various times during the day. He is an energetic dog and mental stimulation is essential for him – snuffle matts and other activity toys helps with managing his energy levels. Jakes ideal home will be a quiet household with no kids or other dogs, and owners with energy, patience and an understanding that he will need time to settle in to his new surroundings. Access to a garden and rural environment/green space is important. He needs at least two decent length walks a day, and time must be spent on training and obedience. He is only reactive towards dogs when they invade his personal space and outstay their welcome. He tends to be happy with interacting and even playing with female dogs, so socialisation is possible. It will just take time and perseverance. He is very clever and has picked up basic commands quickly, as well as making significant progress in recall and lead obedience. He will take some time to settle into his new home and may seem detached at first – this is not unusual for a rescue dog in a new environment. Jake needs people who will dedicate time and effort to continue his positive development, and he will be a fantastic dog in the right environment. Neutered, vaccinated & microchipped

Leah’s Story Leah didn’t have an easy start in life. As a puppy, she was kept on a balcony by an addict and only survived because kind neighbours managed to throw her food.Soon after, she was abandoned on the streets and not long afterwards, she became pregnant.Thankfully, caring neighbours stepped in and had her spayed immediately, but Leah was still struggling to cope with life on the streets. She would follow children around the playground, hoping someone might take her home… but no one ever did. After a short and distressing stay in a public shelter, we stepped in and moved her to kennels and shortly afterwards she was adopted by a lovely family. Unfortunately, we have now received the sad news that Leah needs to be rehomed. The family’s other dog is not coping well with her, and the current dynamics are not meeting Leah’s needs as they had hoped. About Leah Leah missed out on vital love and care in her early years. She had to learn how to survive on the streets with no food and no support, and adapting to life in a home was a big change for her.She has had to learn how to share, how to play appropriately, how to settle indoors, and how to manage her excitement without becoming nippy. Despite this difficult beginning, Leah has blossomed into a funny, affectionate 2-year-old mixed terrier with a huge personality and an even bigger heart. She is: very playful and full of curiosity highly intelligent and responsive to training eager for mental stimulation, training games, and one-to-one attention already familiar with many commands patient around food and able to wait for instruction Walks are still very exciting for her, and in those moments she can forget her training. She can also become overwhelmed in certain situations—particularly around other dogs—and does have a few specific triggers that can make her reactive. That said, with the right support, structure, and understanding, Leah has already made incredible progress and continues to improve every day. The Home She Needs Leah will thrive in a calm, consistent environment where she feels safe and secure. Ideally we are looking for: a home without other pets or children (even though she loves playing with kids. She needs consistent training and family members that can all collaborate on that) someone who can build a trusting, one-to-one bond with her (a single person or couple would be ideal) an active lifestyle that includes enrichment, training, adventure Leah absolutely adores cuddles and will happily jump into bed with her person when given the chance. She loves drying herself off on the bedsheets and snuggling under a blanket ️ We know there is someone out there who would love an energetic, intelligent girl like Leah, someone who would enjoy going on hikes with her, dedicate time to training, and provide the calm environment she needs to become the very best version of herself. Please help us share her story far and wide so we can find her the forever home she deserves! Leah is spayed, vaccinated, healthy, and comes with full Rescue Back Up.

This gorgeous girl was originally rescued from the streets of Macedonia. She was adopted and travelled to the UK several years ago. Sadly over the years in her home she developed reactivity and the family returned her to us. Her anxiety and resulting reactivity was quite severe and to give her the best possibilities for a new beginning we found a rehab centre where she stayed for several months. There was improvement but it was when she was moved to Sakima’s Sanctuary in Blackpool at Poulton le Fylde that she really began gaining confidence. The lovely staff at the sanctuary have worked so hard with her and the results are amazing – she is like a different dog! Shilly

We rescued Shilly and her mum from a street where one of our rescuers lived. They were lying in the middle of the road, unaware of the dangers that come with traffic. Shilly’s mum was taking such amazing care of all her pups, who were sleeping and cuddling with her. It was a beautiful yet heartbreaking sight, knowing they were all together, but all together on the streets. We brought them to the kennels, and the pups have slowly blossomed from scared little munchkins into playful young pupsters, being naughty, running around, and goofing about.Shilly is the only girl, and she has a very sweet nature. She is a little reserved at first but quickly warms up and loves cuddles and playtime. Her ideal home would be with another confident and playful dog. She can live with school-age children and cats. We expect her to grow to around Labrador size when fully grown.
