Hi there! My name is Bella, and I’m a happy, wiggly, energetic girl who is just waiting to find my new best friend. If you’re looking for a shadow who loves fuss and attention as much as I do, we’re going to get along famously! I’m here because, very sadly, my owner passed away and the immediate family were unable to care for me.I’m what you might call a ‘people person.’ I absolutely adore meeting new friends, though I’ll admit I sometimes get so excited that I can’t help but jump up to say hello! My absolute favourite thing in the world is a good bum scratch. I’ll even put my shoulders down and my bum way up in the air to help you reach the right spot. Just a warning: if you stop before I’m finished, I’ll let out a little vocal ‘hey!’ to remind you that I’m still here for more cuddles. When it comes to other dogs, I can be a bit of a ‘big talker.’ If I see a dog behind a fence or while I’m out on my lead, my hackles might go up and I might bark a bit—but don’t worry, I’m not being mean! I’m just feeling a lot of big emotions. Once I actually get to say hello, I settle right down and walk very nicely with my canine companions. I’ve socialised off lead in secure paddocks here, I’m actually quite an independent lady; I’m happy to let other dogs do their own thing while I focus on the important stuff, like sniffing every blade of grass and having a good roll in the dirt! At home I’d prefer to be the centre of attention, which is why I’d like to be the only dog.I’m a ‘busy bee’ by nature, so I’m looking for a home where we can stay active together. I love my toys—especially the soft ones—and I’m always up for a gentle game of tug or fetch. I’m a clever girl, too; I already know how to ‘sit,’ and I was a total star during my assessment, even when sharing my food and treats. My new home will need a secure garden where I can zoom around, and a family who has plenty of time for enrichment and play. If you have a spot on your sofa (and some spare time for bum scratches), I’d love to meet you!

Hi, I’m Captain Crumplefur… although I should warn you, that’s just the beginning. Around here I’ve already collected quite the collection of nicknames… Cap, Crump, Crumpie, even Crumplestiltskin if you’re feeling fancy. I’m clearly a very important gentleman to deserve so many titles.I’m a 10 year old Shih Tzu with a playful spirit and a lot of personality packed into a small, slightly crumpled package. I love people and I really enjoy a good fuss, but I do like things on my own terms. When I’m in the mood to play, I really go for it. Expect bouncing, zooming and a bit of gentle mouthing as part of the fun… it’s all part of my charm.I do very much enjoy my walks and like getting out and about to explore interesting new places. I’m very polite when meeting other dogs. I can be quite playful with them too, which keeps life interesting. I’m a clever boy too. I can sit, give both paws and lie down when asked, especially if there’s something tasty involved. Speaking of food, I’m polite with my meals, though I might hang on a little tighter to my very favourite treats. I’ve actually lived with 3 cats in my previous home, so I would be happy to consider sharing my home with a feline companion in the future. We would need to meet at a home check, just to make sure we can become friends. Now, I’ll be honest with you… I do have my boundaries. I’m not a fan of too much hands-on fuss when it comes to things like grooming or being checked over, and I’ve been known to tell people when I’ve had enough. I need someone who understands dogs like me and will take the time to work with me, not rush me. With the right person who has experience with owning dogs with handling sensitivities in the past, I know I can feel much more comfortable.Due to my behaviour around handling, and the fact that I am absolutely not prepared to share my favourite toys while I am playing with them, I’m looking for an adult-only home with someone experienced, patient and willing to understand me for who I am. In return, you’ll get a funny, affectionate, slightly cheeky companion who will keep you smiling every single day. I’ll need to stay on the lead in public places, but you can always use longer leads to give me more freedom and I’ll need some outside space attached to the house that is secure (4ft minimum height) for me to stretch my legs in.If you’ve got room in your life for a little character with a big personality (and plenty of nicknames), I might just be your perfect match.

Eukie, a 5 years old female Crossbreed available for adoption from Gables Dogs & Cats Home in Devon

Hello, I’m Eukie — a big girl with an equally big personality and a whole lot of love to give once I feel safe. I was surrendered through no fault of my own when my family no longer had the time, space, or finances to care for me, and now I’m looking for a new forever home where I can truly settle and shine. When I meet new people, I can be a bit shy and unsure. I might bark at first because I don’t quite know what to think, but with time, tasty treats, and gentle encouragement, I’ll gather my courage and come over to say hello. If I see another dog greeting someone confidently, that really helps — I take my cues from my dog friends and it gives me a big confidence boost. I absolutely love other dogs and gain so much reassurance from their presence. Having a confident, friendly canine companion helps me feel safe and brave, so I must live in a home with another dog who is playful, confident, and people-friendly.I’m quite a chatty girl and I have a whole range of noises depending on what I’m trying to tell you. I enjoy affection, but on my own terms. The better I know you, the more affectionate I become, but even if we’re not cuddling, I’m perfectly happy just relaxing nearby on my bed or the floor, enjoying your company. I form strong bonds quickly and once I trust you, I like to keep you in sight — just to make sure my favourite people are close by.I’m tolerant of handling and cope well with checks of my ears, mouth, and feet. Being lifted makes me uncomfortable, so that’s best done by two people if it’s ever needed. At the vet, I was a little hesitant at first — new people can be worrying — but once I realised there were treats involved, I relaxed quickly. I had no reaction at all to my kennel cough vaccination. Grooming is fine for me too, as long as I’m calm — if I’m feeling playful, I might try to turn the brush into a toy!Speaking of toys… I love them. All kinds! Tug, fetch, or independent play — I’m happy however you want to play, or I can keep myself entertained if you’re busy. I’m polite around food and happy to share both my food bowl and high-value treats. I can also sit and give my paws when asked. On walks, I’m strong and can pull at times, so I’ll need to wear a head collar to help my humans keep good control of me. With consistency and guidance, I’ll continue improving my lead manners.I’m house trained, was crate trained as a puppy, and I’ve been allowed on the furniture. I can be a little anxious when travelling, but I do settle once I’m on my way.I’m looking for a home with someone that understands sensitive dogs like me and has owned an anxious large breed previously, and already has a confident dog to become my emotional support companion. In return, I’ll give you loyalty, conversation, and a whole lot of heart. If you’ve got room in your life (and on your sofa) for a big, thoughtful girl who just wants to feel secure and loved, I’d really like to meet you.

My life has been full of hardship and difficulties. I have already been in 3 different homes before I arrived at the safety of Gables. My first owners tried to train me as a gundog but as I wasn’t very good at it they no longer wanted me. The sad part is they were prepared to shoot me. Luckily I was saved by a farmer who rehomed me to a family with small children after I had been attacked by a large dog. With all the trauma and upheaval I had already faced I found living with a young family too much which is why I found my way here.Despite such a hard start I think I have been a very lucky boy to have been given another amazing chance at happiness. I have been here for a while now and I know that is because the humans want to make sure I find a home that is perfect for me with people who can help me thrive.I came into rescue back in 2020, and over the years I’ve shown that once I trust someone, I love deeply and wholeheartedly. With my people, I am affectionate, loyal, and incredibly loving. I adore cuddles and will gently wrap my paws around your neck to pull you in for a proper hug. I can be playful and silly too — tennis balls are my absolute favourite, and a game of fetch is one of my happiest moments.I’m very good with handling from people I know well and trust, although I can be sensitive around my head and don’t like hands coming over it. Because of my past experiences, I do need to wear a well-fitted basket muzzle for vet visits and any hands-on care like grooming or medical treatment — it helps me feel safe and keeps everyone protected. I’ve actually learned to enjoy brushing with people I trust, which shows just how far I’ve come.Strangers are very hard for me. When I don’t know someone, I can feel overwhelmed and frightened, and I may bark or react to keep them away. I cope best when new people ignore me completely and give me time and space. Because of this, I’ll always need careful management around visitors, and I’ll need to be kept separate from people I don’t know well. Any necessary introductions must be done slowly, with me on a lead and wearing my muzzle.Walks are something I really enjoy. I’m generally lovely on the lead, although I do react if I see dogs, small animals, or busy surroundings. Because of this, I must always stay on the lead and wear my basket muzzle in public. Quiet walking routes suit me best, where I don’t have to face lots of unexpected encounters. I am a very playful young man and I love to have off lead time in the secure paddocks here at Gables. The brilliant thing is that with so many private rentable secure paddocks in the area my new owners will still be able to give me the freedom of off lead play but in a totally safe environment. I adore playing with toys and I am really good at playing fetch. I quite enjoy giving the toy to my handler and grabbing it back quickly when they go to pick it up. I find it hilarious.I am very motivated by food which is the best thing to use as a distraction when there is another dog around. I have shown some resource guarding behaviour around my food in the kennels so I prefer to be left alone during meal times. I know how to sit when I’m asked but I still need other basic training once I’m finally in my forever home. My new home will need a secure garden with 5ft high fencing. Due to my past I absolutely can’t be around children, even if they only visit very occasionally. My home needs to be my sanctuary and I am very unsettled around kids.Due to my difficult past, I am a complex chap who has some very specific requirements from my new owners. It is very important that I am rehomed to someone who has experience dealing with reactivity in a dog that they have owned in the past, while they were an adult. Experience with resource guarding would be beneficial, though not essential, provided adopters are willing to research and follow professional guidance.I need a quiet, rural or semi-rural location where exposure to unfamiliar people and dogs can be kept to a minimum. My new owners must be understanding that I must always be kept separate from visitors to the home, where having visitors at all is a very rare occurrence. A secure garden with solid fencing of at least 5 feet high throughout is a must for safe outdoor play.I feel now is my time to shine! If you feel that you have the time and experience that I am looking for then I would be very grateful if you filled out an application form.

I’m Lorenzo, an ex-racing Greyhound who’s swapped the track for a chance at a real home, and I’m throwing myself into this next chapter with a lot of enthusiasm. I’m a confident, lively boy who loves meeting new people and making friends. If you’ve got time for fuss, cuddles, and a bit of fun, I’ll happily be right by your side.I really enjoy affection and I’m not shy about asking for more. If you stop stroking me, don’t be surprised if I lean into you or gently remind you I’m still there. I’m great for handling and have been brilliant with the vet too, so you won’t need to worry about check-ups. I also quite enjoy being brushed and will happily relax while you give me a groom.Toys are one of my favourite things, especially soft, squeaky ones. They really bring out my playful side. I’m also very food-motivated and I take treats nicely, although I will help myself if anything tasty is left within reach, so tidy worktops are a must in my future home.As I’ve never lived in a home before, I’m still learning the ropes and I don’t know any basic commands yet. I’m keen though, and with kind, consistent guidance I’ll enjoy learning what being a family dog is all about. When we’re out and about, I walk nicely on the lead and don’t pull much at all. I do need to stay on lead and wear my muzzle in public, as I have a strong prey drive, so my future family will need to be comfortable managing that. I’m happy wearing my harness and muzzle and don’t let it spoil my walks one bit.I get on well with other dogs and greet them politely. If given the chance in a safe, enclosed space, I enjoy a gentle game of chase, but I’m just as happy to relax and soak up attention from my humans. I’d be fine living with another dog, but I’m not able to live with cats or small animals.I’m looking for a home where I can be shown patience, kindness, and understanding as I adjust to life off the track. I’d suit first-time owners who’ve done their research on Greyhounds and are ready to help me discover just how lovely home life can be.If you’re searching for an affectionate, fun-loving companion with a big heart and a waggy tail, I might just be your boy.

Hello there. I’m Markle and I’m so glad you’ve come here to find out more about me.I have been at Gables for a little while now and I have had a troubled time in the past. I’m afraid I can’t divulge too much about what happened but just know that I am happier here. I can tell you that there were times in my past life when I was put under too much pressure.I’m a sweetheart. I might be a bit shy when we first meet but just give me a few minutes and it doesn’t take me long to come out of my shell. I have bags of energy and plenty of love to give. I have learnt so much since I have been here at Gables but there are some traits that are inherent which means they will always be part of my character. One of these inherent traits is resource guarding. I don’t share food and if I am ever challenged for it I will growl, snap and bite.I’m a playful girl and I love spending time in the paddocks where I can run and play with all the toys. When I’m in the mood I will bring toys over and put them in your hand, this means ‘let’s play together’. Sometimes I like to take my toys to bed, or lay down outside and play on my own. If you try to take my toys or play with me at this point I will become guarded and I may growl to tell you not to approach me. I’ve learnt so much since I have been here and I have shown how quickly I can pick up new skills. They are currently working on teaching me to ‘leave it’ which could be really helpful for me in the future.I used to be very strong on the lead and I would pull like train when on walks. However I have undergone loose lead training and I am very good on the lead now. Most of the time I walk to heel, apart from when I see a squirrel or anything else super exciting. I can also sit, lie down, give paw and put my paws ‘up’ on your arm. When I first came to Gables I loved being around other dogs. I liked to play off lead and I was often out and about making friends. I began to suffer with ear infections which took quite a while to get under control. My ears were very painful and I became sensitive to other dogs being around them. Despite having no issues with my ears for ages now as I am on really good medication, I still worry about other dogs touching my ears and I will snap at them if I am concerned. I have also displayed resource guarding behaviour with other animals so for this reason I am looking for a home as the only pet.I would love to meet a person or couple who have a very quiet home who like to keep themselves to themselves. Due to my past I am not able to be around children of any age at any time. I will need owners who have experience with food guarding behaviour as without the right knowledge we could all be put at risk. I will need to wear a muzzle when I see the vet, have baths, when I’m brushed and for any formal handling of any kind. I am eager to please and I love learning new things so I would be really happy to attend agility classes in the future.I really am a lovely girl who just needs to be in the right environment with the right people in order to reach my full potential and flourish.

Wow, how lucky am I that you want to find out more about me. I feel honoured. Well, I’m an aloof girl when you first meet me, but don’t let this put you off. I’m just a slow burner. Offering me a toy can be a really good ice breaker as I blooming love them. I adore those ones that are like teddy bears but have a squeak. I’ve accumulated quite a few in my kennel already! I’m a very tidy girl and when I’m done playing I’ll put the toys away in the toy box, well I did here anyway.I’m a high energy girl and I can’t wait to find active people so we can go on lots of adventures together. Once you’ve gained my trust I can be quite cuddly and I’ll use trusted people to look to for reassurance if I’m worried about what’s going on around me. I’m very frightened when I have to see the vet so I need to wear a muzzle to keep me and the vet safe.I presume you’d like to know what happened to lead to me ending up here, Well, I’ve been in the same home with the same family since I was a baby. I was living with two other dogs, one male who I got on very well with, and one female who I fell out with after she had a litter of puppies. Sadly our relationship was beyond repair so I was unable to stay in the same home as her. When meeting other dogs I can be a little tense and unsure at first but within a few moments I’m much more relaxed. I would be prepared to share my home with a male dog who doesn’t show interest in playing with toys.I’m a polite lady who can sit and drop when I’m asked. There’s plenty of room for me to learn some new tricks but I’m pretty good with basic manners and I have been house trained in my previous home.I am hoping to meet a new family who can give me lots of reassurance and plenty of long walks. My new people will need to have experience with active breeds and have owned a dog who doesn’t cope well with vet visits. I will need a wear a muzzle when I’m in public places and I have to stay on the lead too. I hope you like what you see and I really hope you choose me and fill in an application form soon.

Hi, I’m Rayne… and I think the quiet life might just be my perfect happily-ever-after I’ve recently hung up my racing shoes and I’m ready to discover sofas, soft blankets, and the magic of having my very own humans. I’m a gentle, sensitive soul who loves calm affection and peaceful company. If you stop fussing me too soon, don’t be surprised if I softly nudge your hand to remind you that I’m still here and very much enjoying it.I’m wonderfully well-mannered for handling, grooming, and vet visits. As long as everything feels calm and kind, I’m a very good girl. Busy, noisy environments aren’t really my style though. I truly shine in quiet spaces where I can relax, feel safe, and show my sweet personality.Toys are still a fascinating mystery to me. I watch them with big curious eyes like they’re tiny moving puzzles. They are quite fun to chase when they are thrown but I haven’t quite figured out how to play yet. With patience and love, you might get to watch me discover a whole new world of fun. When it comes to food, I’m polite and easy-going. I happily share my space at mealtimes and I don’t guard my treats. I do prefer picking snacks up from the floor rather than taking them from hands. It’s just one of my little quirks.Walks are something I really enjoy. I stroll along nicely and love watching the world go by. Because small fast-moving things can catch my attention, I need to wear a harness and muzzle and stay on lead in public. I’m very used to this routine, and it doesn’t stop me enjoying my adventures.I’m calm and respectful around other dogs and don’t feel the need to be the centre of attention. If I had a doggy housemate, I’d love one who is relaxed and happy to share space rather than constantly play. What I’m really searching for is a kind, understanding home where I can learn what it means to just be a dog. Somewhere gentle. Somewhere safe. Somewhere filled with soft voices, cosy naps, and people who see the quiet magic in a sensitive soul like me.If you’re looking for a sweet, peaceful companion who will melt into your life and your heart… I might just be the girl you’ve been waiting for
