About Save Our Spaniels

Save Our Spaniels is a UK-registered charity (No. 1173875) dedicated to rescuing spaniels and bretons (Brittanys) from abandonment, perreras and shelters worldwide, as well as helping UK dogs whose owners’ circumstances have changed. Founded in 2015, the rescue is run by a small team of passionate volunteers, with support across the UK and Spain. All dogs are placed into UK foster homes for assessment before being advertised for adoption, ensuring careful and suitable placements. Supported by a network of fosterers, transporters, home checkers and adopters, Save Our Spaniels works tirelessly to give these deserving dogs a second chance in loving UK homes.

BASIL the springer spaniel came over from Spain back in November 2024 and it became apparent, he had an issue with one of his hips. Hip dysplasia was diagnosed and a FHO (femoral head ostectomy) was carried out to ease his issue whilst in foster. Completely successful and then he was adopted in April 2025. Sadly BASIL has been returned to us a year later. Although not a problem with the husband, the wife adopter had issues with him pulling on a lead and reacting to other dogs. BASIL is in foster near Grantham, Lincolnshire and living with dogs and cats (no issues with either). He is a very cuddly boy, jumps straight in the car and travels well. Sleeps in the kitchen at night with the other fosters and is fully housetrained. Not particularly prey driven and loves to be in the garden watching the world go by. He is a calm 4 year old and loves his rural walks. He would be looking for a quieter home with someone who enjoys their walks in the woods or fields. He would so love his own sofa again with someone to love him for the rest of his days. BASIL is microchipped, vaccinated, castrated and had recent parasite treatments.

BRUNO the Spanish breton is in foster in Chelmsford, Essex. He has the usual characteristics of a breton and is energetic, eager to please and very loving. Loves his walks, can pull on the lead, but responds to his training which will need to be continued. Once a week he goes to a secure field and just runs and runs around the perimeter - not necessarily trying to get out, but just to run. His recall is a work in progress in the secure field, but listens towards the end of the session. He sits nicely to have his harness put on and does not make any fuss. He travels well in the boot of the car, but will not jump in so likes to be lifted in. He has been taken to the beach several times and loves to run on a long 10m training line. He will dip his toes in the water but has not gone in too deep. He is house trained and will ask to go out. He is happy to chill out on the rug or the sofa or on a lap if one is available in the evenings and has been left for 3-4 hours with the resident dogs, but he has been crated during this time to prevent any chewing! He is happy to go into the crate with a treat and will sleep. BRUNO does have a tendency to “relocate shoes and clothing” and have a bit of a gnaw, so things do need to be put away! Foster mum has been working getting a bit more weight on him, but after poor nutrition in Spain, having 2 good meals a day, he will fill out in due course. During the day, he will have a few treats (biscuits) which he takes gently. When offered treats he will sit and wait his turn and is not pushy. He has high bird prey and will do zoomies in the garden. Out on walks there are certain spots where he will stop and listen for the birds. He can be a little wary meeting some new people and may seek reassurance from foster mum, but his confidence is building. We are looking for a rural home where his new family are around most of the day. He will need continued training on recall and walking, but foster mum has started this process and will just need to be continued. He will need a calm, resident dog to help him integrate into family life. He will give so much back in love with the right family. BRUNO is microchipped, vaccinated, castrated, had recent parasite treatments and a Spanish Passport.

CALVIN, we will be brutally honest, is a medium mixed breed of unknown quantities, but is 100% gorgeous! He is in foster in Chippenham, Wiltshire. He was one of 80 dogs rescued from a Spanish perrera that was closing with no options for it’s occupants, other than to be put to sleep. He’d been in the perrera for quite a while with no bedding, decent food or any human interaction, so for him to arrive into a UK foster home and settle so well is a great indicator to his temperament. Words from his foster mum, “Calvin is a really lovely boy. He loves to have belly rubs and will roll over to ask for one. He’s very sweet”. He has been living with a resident dog, teenagers and chickens in the garden (although I believe there was an incident whereby he carried said chicken to a new location!). He can get anxious around other dogs when out on a walk and this will need further work with a calm and relaxed adopter, who will introduce him to good experiences when meeting new dogs. We would love to see him in a home with another calm, maybe older dog, so he can learn from their reactions to new situations. Sadly, whilst in foster, CALVIN has been diagnosed with glaucoma and had one eye removed. There is potential for it to develop in the other eye, hence his need for a long term foster home (Save Our Spaniels would pay for all his veterinary care going forward). CALVIN is housetrained and has been left for a couple of hours with no incident, he just settles on his bed and sleeps. Happy to eat, share toys and chews with the resident dog and instantly friendly when meeting new people. He is microchipped, vaccinated, castrated and parasite treated and has a Spanish Passport.

CARLY, our pretty breton, is in foster in Doncaster, S Yorkshire. She arrived a little fearful of her new surroundings (having never lived in a home) and didn’t know her name (but then she had only had it for a week or so!), she comes in from the garden when her foster parents call her name and she’ll also respond from another room with a reward of a small treat. Recall is a work in progress. But is improving every day. Loves a lead walk, the whole world is new to her, she really follows the resident dogs and looks to them for confidence. She has been let her off lead in a secure field and she loves to run, zoomies are her favourite thing to do. Our dogs all join in and this is when you really see her smile. Her adoptive family are going to need to put the time in to build up her trust. When worried she runs away into her bed in the corner of foster mum’s office. CARLY has shown NO signs of aggression even when she is extremely worried. She freezes. When she sees the lead coming she gets excited as she has now learnt this means its time for a walk. Rather than run away she lies down a little fearful . Gentle words, gentle hands treats and encouragement her harness goes on easily and she up and ready to go. CARLY’S confidence is growing by the day. Each day we see something new, she grows more comfortable with us each day. When you put her food down she is nervous to go to her bowl. Now she has learnt we put her food down in her corner tell her she is a good girl and walk away she tucks in. We suspect she has been hit when she has gone for food. But she is learning quickly that nothing bad is going to happen in this house. Consistency and routine has really been the best thing for her. CARLY now has the confidence to come and nudge us for affection. foster mum cried the first time she did it! Recently she jumped up on the sofa next to foster mum and snuggled into her. Foster mum stroked her and rubbed her tummy, she stretched out with a satisfying groan and went to sleep. To be picked as her safe place is truly magical. We have no doubt her new family will be rewarded with the same. CARLY is house trained, loves the company of other dogs and is happy to share food, chews and toys. She hasn’t been cat tested, so no to cats. As she can be fearful a home with older children would be preferable, so they aren’t lots of loud noises and bustle. She has been left for an hour or two left with the resident dogs and had no issues (her long legs lend herself well to reaching counters though!). CARLY will need another playful resident dog(s) in her adoptive home and a family willing to take things slowly, so she can build up her confidence. She is microchipped, vaccinated, spayed, had recent parasite treatments and a Spanish Passport.

CHABELITA is in foster in West Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire and ready to find her forever home. From the moment she arrived into her foster home, she has been so well behaved, loves her walks, especially where she can have long sniffs. Happy to meet dogs and people when out and about. Sleeps in the fosterer’s bedroom in her bed alongside the resident dogs, but would probably sleep elsewhere. She has been exposed to older children (teenagers) and she was very happy and settled with them. She is generally instantly friendly with all new people. She was found on wasteland in Spain with a podenco and clearly had been dumped. Her first time in a home and she has flourished. CHABBY is housetrained and happy to share food and toys with the other resident dogs (but will need some supervision with chews!). She has not been off lead, only used long lead so far with the foster family. She does show interest in birds etc, so could have a slight prey drive, so off lead needs to be part of on going training. She is a well behaved, loving little girl and would respond so well where she can get lots of cuddles and attention. She doesn't gulp her food or snatch treats. CHABBY would be very happy as an only dog with someone around most of the day (can be left for an hour or two), but equally would love a resident dog to cuddle up with. All she wants is cuddles, lovely walks and a warm cosy bed. She is microchipped, vaccinated, spayed, had recent parasite treatments and has a Spanish Passport.

FLORRIE’S mum, LETTIE (last photo) was found as a stray and fortunately whelped in the comfort of a Spanish foster home. FLORRIE came over with her mum once she had her rabies vaccine and is in a foster home near Grantham, Lincolnshire. Mum is a small breton, but who knows who Dad is, looking at her size at 5 months, we think she will be medium sized (12-14 kg) when fully grown. FLORRIE settled into her UK foster home very quickly. She is a happy, curious puppy, who wants to be doing what you’re doing, but also comfortable enough to take herself off for a snooze. She has also been happy to go out in the garden by herself for zoomies/amusement (which often takes the form of chasing her tail!). She can, at times, be quite bouncy in the house and has used our teenagers’ legs as springboards at times, but she has responded well to training on that front and is now very quick to try and self-regulate. We have seen lots of puppy behaviour, chewing, mouthing etc, but again, she is responding well to training and correction. She would suit a home with older children. She has met other people (and their dogs) when out on walks and has been calm and friendly. She has really taken to our teenagers and is very excited to see them when they get home from school. She regularly tries to initiate play with the resident dogs, but when they decline, she leaves them be. When we play fetch with our ball-obsessed cavapoo, she will run alongside to join in, but will not try and take the ball off her (she got told-off the first time by said cavapoo and has not tried to do it since). She responds well to her name and her recall is good, albeit it has only been tested in the garden and in a secure field with minimal distractions. FLORRIE is a fabulous puppy - she is still very young and thus has much to learn, but she is bright and responds well to correction and training. It is something that adopters will need to continue to work on, but shouldn’t be a problem in the longer term - consistency is definitely the key. Her foster parents have started to guide FLORRIE and can give the adopters the tools to continue her training. Her foster mum says’ “she is a joyous pup who offers the best of both worlds - playful and energetic but also a lap snuggler - for a family who is willing to continue putting in the work it takes to help any puppy to become a well-adjusted, happy and well-behaved dog.” FLORRIE is microchipped, vaccinated, had various parasite treatments, a Spanish Passport and will leave on an Adoption Contract with a clause to spay before the age of 18 months (usually after their first season). She won’t be rehomed with an intact male.

FLOSS was a stray breton back in 2021 and after a time in a UK foster home, she was adopted. Fast forward 4 years and she has been returned because the adopters say they can no longer cope with her scavenging in the garden and on walks. Apparently she is constantly looking for food, when out in a cafe or generally out and about. As a stray, a lot of our rescues see food as a way to live, but generally, with training over a period of time, this subsides. I feel training may have been missed here. She is now back into foster in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, N Yorkshire and has been assessed for a number of weeks. Lovely FLOSS is a happy soul and very friendly meeting new people and happy around other dogs in the foster home and out and about. Her foster mum says she is very respectful when meeting all dogs and loves to play with them. Apparently she is very gentle even when playing with the resident chihuahua. She is house trained, happy to share food/chews/toys with the other resident dogs and has been left for 3 hours with them with no issues. She has mastered “come”, “stay” and “sit” and good recall with a whistle. Foster mum says she loves her walks and visits to the Cafes/Restaurants. She loves the beach and water! She is an active dog and enjoys her car rides for different walks. FLOSS waits patiently at the car to be lifted into the boot, where she travels with the other dogs. FLOSS also loves her food and a good treat after her walk. She is a very adaptable dog and deserves a lovely permanent home with another resident dog. She hasn’t been cat tested. FLOSS is microchipped, vaccinated, spayed, had recent parasite treatments and would love her new adoptive home.

GOLFO, who has just turned 9 years (but you wouldn’t believe it) is in foster in Wanstead, London. He's already setted in his foster home; doesn't bark, he is a lovely dog. Loves his cuddles and interacts with people very well. No issues with any dogs introduced into the house and settled well with the fosterer’s resident 3 dogs. Showing off his breton qualities of intelligence, he mastered dog flap on his own volition very quickly. Foster mum has let him off leash but on a long line, and due to incident where another dog clamped onto him he is little wary of other dogs when out on a walk, so foster mum is working to resolve that. This will need a little work, but I am sure he will be okay with time and patience and let him know there is nothing to fear. Instantly friendly meeting new people, happy to be cuddled, picked up and groomed. GOLFO is housetrained and happy to be share toys, food and treats with the resident dogs. He has shown a lot of interest in the cat, so we will say no to cats to be on the safe side. He has been left for up to 4 hours with no issues settling in the home with the other dogs. He jumps into the car with no issues and travels well. Has mastered “sit” and “come”. If someone is around most of the day, we feel he would be happy as an only dog, but equally would like the company of resident dogs. GOLFO is microchipped, vaccinated, castrated, had recent parasite treatments and has a Spanish Passport.

KIKA, a very loving breton is in foster in Dersingham, Norfolk. She is happy, but slightly nervous and sensitive to loud noises and sudden movements. She is very people-oriented and actively seeks affection, comfort and reassurance from humans, showing less interest in interacting with other dogs. She settles well when accompanied by a person and appears to relax more easily when she has a secure space, such as a corner or sheltered area, where she feels safe. KIKA is affectionate, gentle and enjoys close human companionship. During the day, KIKA has been left alone for up to one hour at a time and has coped well. Overnight, she is left with the resident dogs from approximately 9:30 pm until 5:00 am without any issues. There have been no incidents whilst left overnight, although she has occasionally barked when deer have entered the garden. Overall, she settles well and has shown no signs of separation-related behaviours during the periods she has been left alone. Her recall has improved significantly since learning her name and, due to her strong attachment to people, she generally enjoys staying close to her handlers and returning regularly for reassurance and check-ins. KIKA would benefit from living with a calm, confident, and patient resident dog who can help continue to build her confidence and teach her appropriate social skills and household routines. While she is very people-oriented and seeks most of her comfort and affection from humans, a well-matched older dog could provide valuable guidance, companionship and positive role modelling. Any resident dog would need to be tolerant of her occasional insecurities around human attention. She travels well in the car, but needs to lured into the vehicle initially, this will improve with more car experience. KIKA is microchipped, vaccinated, spayed, had recent parasite treatments and a Spanish Passport.

KOKO is a mix of breton and setter (about springer spaniel size) and in foster near Grantham, Lincolnshire. He was rescued from Spain after abandoned. He has bowed front legs, but our Spanish and UK vets see no reason for any medical intervention, his mobility is not affected. He is living in a house with dogs and cats with no issues, but he is very people orientated and we feel he would be happier as an only resident dog. Dog savvy cats in his adoptive home would be fine. He is housetrained and happy to settle in the kitchen at night with the other foster dogs. He can take liberties (counter surfing, wiping off with the dishcloth and tea towels), so does need boundaries and someone to provide some rules! But he does listen! Quite strong on lead and harness, but settles after 15/20 mins into the walk. Can be a little reactive to some dogs, when walking but distraction tactics work and he is getting more settled. KOKO is a bit of a cuddle monster, loves a belly rub (and has really soft, fluffy fur). He also loves to play with his toys (although there may be some unexplained explosions!). He’s an intelligent boy and would love to use his brain (scent trailing would be right up his street). KOKO is microchipped, vaccinated, castrated, had recent parasite treatments and a Spanish Passport.

LANA is in foster in Shifnal, Shropshire and now ready for her forever. A breton cross found in a field (dumped?) in Spain. She is curious about everything, playful and still very much a puppy. She’s a lovely natured dog and after being very frightened when she arrived and has blossomed into a lovely dog. She is very intelligent and taught herself to go up and downstairs within a day and has also taught herself to open doors in her foster home. Quite impressive for a dog who hasn’t lived in a house before! LANA is young and her foster parents have been working on basic commands, but training will need to be continued. She knows her name and knows to wait and respond to her name in the house and garden. She’s only been off lead in a secure field, so recall needs to be worked on. She eats extremely quickly and if you’re not careful will try and pinch food from the others! Foster parents are working with her to leave the others when they’re eating and she is making good progress with this. She is housetrained now, jumps straight in the car and travels well. Happy to share chews and toys with the resident dogs, been left for a couple of hours with no issues. She is happy to be groomed, feet washed down, instantly friendly meeting people and dogs. She hasn’t been cat tested, so we will say no to cats in adoptive home. She will need another dog to learn from, cuddle with and play with. LANA is microchipped, vaccinated, spayed, had recent parasite treatments and has a Spanish Passport.

LOUIS was adopted 3 years ago as a puppy from SOS, but a change in circumstances has lead him to coming back to us. In foster near Sleaford, Lincolnshire. He is a sensitive little boy, which isn’t immediately obvious at first meeting. Just a 11 kg of happy, bouncy, fun loving pup. Sometimes barks if he thinks dinner is a bit slow! Barks with excitement to go out. Pulls like a train on a walk at first, which lessens a bit once he gets his nose down, but would be a good candidate for loose lead training as he's very food driven. He loves to be groomed and enjoys cuddles, very biddable around the home. Recall is ok but only bee let him off in a secure field where he would come to foster mum’s whistle or call, althogh sometimes by a scenic route. We were told he wasn't a good traveller, but he's been fine on the back seat with a bed for support and he can see out the window. This busy little boy is looking for an active home, where outdoors life is the norm. He would do well if given an activity like agility, scent training, man trailing etc. LOUIS is a good little chap around the home, housetrained and will settle in his bed during the day. Has shown fear of loud noises and have been told fireworks. His reaction is that he pants, trembles and rushes around looking as if he wants to get away. At these times security is even more essential. Currently living , sleeping and eating with 6 others both male and female with no problems. hasn’t shown any interest in our visiting pigeons! Not been cat tested. LOUIS is microchipped, vaccinated, castrated, had recent parasite treatments and ready for a loving, caring home.
