Hope for Podencos

. He was adopted in August 2020 and has been in a home for 5.5 years, but we are in agreement with his current owners that despite them working with trainers and behaviourists over the years, that their busy home environment that has regular young children visiting is not the environment he needs in order to thrive. Babu is an affectionate and calm dog who loves nothing more than a head and ear massage and at times really actively seeks out a fuss from people. He has so many amazing qualities. He is incredibly well loved by his current adopters who have found this decision very difficult but know it is right for Babu. As mentioned, they have worked extensively with Babu and as such he knows various commands for certain situations which we will of course share with any future adopter. He is crate trained and really recognises his crate as his safe space and can be shut in there if needed. He isn’t destructive in the home, travels well in the back seat of the car but isn’t so good in the boot and will happily settle during the day at home.At the heart of Babu’s challenges is a level of anxiety that means he is craving stability and routine and a quiet, calm life to match his calm personality. His current owners have already done a huge amount of work with him and he now walks much more calmly and confidently on lead, only really reacting to loud tractors despite having previously reacted to other dogs, cars, bikes, lorries etc. We know he responds really well to training and we are looking for a family who can continue working on this. Praise is his reward during any training rather than treats as he can become overstimulated around food. His current home have grandchildren that visit regularly and this puts Babu on edge and means he is trigger stacked in the home. He has a history of resource guarding anything edible which has also vastly improved with training but when he is on edge and overwhelmed, those old behaviours can start to creep in again and this is a risk with small children around. We are looking for a home free of children in a calm area with a garden and access to rural walks. Babu could continue to live as an only dog, or could live with a well balanced, calm female dog as he is already used to sharing his space with a female dog that is part of the extended family. Ideally, Babu would live in calm a home with a relatively set and predictable routine - he will reward you with love and affection and of course that wonderful podenco character!Babu will be adopted with ongoing support and guidance from ourselves and our trainer, and we can also enlist the help of a behaviourist if needed.Babu is neutered, vaccinated and tested negative for all Mediterranean diseases. , along with her mother, and sister Estrella. Her sister and mother have both been adopted and are living in their forever homes. Cati was living in a foster home in Spain with many other podencos and is now in the foster home in the UK as an only dog. Cati is a sweet girl but is very shy initially and a month into her foster home in the UK she is now starting to show a little more of her personality. When her foster dad comes home from work, she stands up on the sofa and is very waggy tailed as she waits to greet him. She is also becoming more curious around the home, especially with the lovely smells that come from the kitchen! She is no bother in the home at all and hasn’t been at all destructive. She can be left for a few hours with no concerns and she sleeps downstairs on the sofa and goes through the night. She is clean in the house, walks really well on the lead and is just starting to relax into car journeys a little bit more. She has her safe spot, which is on her sofa, and after the trip from Spain took a lot of coaxing to come off but thats changing now. She really enjoys being out in the garden and on walks - we do think a home with a garden is a must for Cati as that way she can progress in her own time without needing to go on walks from day one after a move to her forever home. She doesn't actively seek out affection that often but is happy to be stroked and she also enjoys a belly rub and a scratch! She is happy for people to come and sit next to her on the sofa in close proximity and we know in time she’ll really start to relax and learn to fully trust and relax. Cati hasn’t proven to be much of a foodie since her move to the UK but in a home with other dogs in Spain she could sometimes be a little protective over her food when other dogs were around and will also try and steal food from the others - this is not uncommon with rescue dogs, so if she goes to a home with other dogs which is our preference as we think it would help her to progress quicker, this will need to be managed and can also be worked on with the support of our trainer. Whilst our preference is a home with other dogs, Cati could also live as an only dog with a kind, patient adopter or foster who can help her blossom just as she is doing with her wonderful fosters. Cati wouldn’t be suitable for a busy city - a town, village or somewhere more rural would be ideal. We think Cati could live with older children, as long as they are respectful of her space. Cati is a wonderful girl who just needs a chance to really blossom and show her full wonderful personality. Cati has been neutered, vaccinated and has tested negative for all Mediterranean diseases. , like so many podencos is unknown but luckily found his way into the care of one of our partner kennels and now into foster in the UK!Chico has bonded hard with his foster mum and loves cuddles and playtime with her, he can get a little over excited like any adolescent so toys are a great stimulant and release for him. He gets on with all other members in the home, including the children who he also enjoys playing with. He does have a high prey drive and gets very excited on walks at squirrels, this can lead to some pulling so requires ongoing training.He sleeps well through the night and is crate trained, he has been left solo for short periods of time with no issues - he is currently the only dog in the home which suits him fine. Although he does love greeting other dogs on walks with a polite play bow so could live with other dogs.He is a foody so this needs a little ongoing training around human meal times and counter surfing, but is great for training him. He will store his high value treats for later - hiding them around the house and garden. He is quick to learn and has basic commands down after just a month in the home.Chico has taken so much in his stride in his short time in foster - he is great in the car, is happy on walks in his harness and collar, happy having his nails trimmed. (less keen on the bath!) He can still find some things a little scary and finds the local kebab shop daunting, but he is progressing and improving daily. , who believe it or not is a full Podenco Andaluz - clearly dad a little less paddy! Irene felt he was being overlooked so made the decision to send him to UK foster in July of that year, not long after arriving in foster he was adopted. Sadly with the addition of children arriving in the home, Cisco has struggled to cope with the changes this has brought. After training and behaviour support the team and adopter made the difficult decision that the environment change was just too much for him and the kindest thing we could do was re-home him.We felt a reset with our specialist foster would give us a really clear picture of what is going on for him,and what he needs moving forward - this did him the world of good and he has now been moved to a foster that can re-create this for him.Cisco can be an anxious boy, and we feel that either a home as an only dog, or with a smaller calm dog would work best as he can find larger dogs of either sex intimidating. He is not the most playful dog, but will happily have a run alongside any companion in the garden or secure field.He has been able to really bond with the humans in both foster homes - although he can still be a little more shy with his foster dad he happily cuddles up to all once reassured! He was really curious and affectionate with the team when they met him in foster. He is a low energy dog that just loves to be lounging around on the sofa enjoying cuddles!Cisco needs a home with no children or cats, so that his stimulation levels can remain where we know they work best, nice and level with a very routine and predictable environment - that being said ha handles London life well. He walks beautifully on the lead and his anxieties drop away when he is confident with his human out and about.He is just such a loving and affectionate boy, he wants to be with people and made a fuss of. That being said he can be left for a few hours at a time. , food has become a source of comfort for her. She needs her forever home so she can finally settle with regular exercise and stimulation.Cuca is a happy, sociable and affectionate girl with both humans and other dogs - she has even made friends with the cat in her foster home as you can see from her pictures. She is playful with other dogs and toys, and most out of character for podencos - loves a swim in the sea.She walks well on the lead and can manage both city and rural lifestyles. She loves being in a home and has adapted well form kenells, a garden is not a must for her as long as she has green spaces locally to explore. She travels well and is not worried by new places.As you can see form her pictures Cuca is carrying extra weight, whilst she has no health concerns she is currently on a weight management programme to help her loose the extra pounds and this would need to continue in her foster or forever home.Cuca will be neutered, is vaccinated and tested negative for all Mediterranean diseases. Hope for Podencos

. He was rushed to the vets where he needed life saving surgery. They hoped they could save his eyesight but that was sadly not the case and as such Jimbo has had to have both of his eyes removed.Despite this fact, he is a remarkably happy and contented chap who has adapted incredibly well. Podencos always amaze us at their resilience and adaptability and Jimbo is a shining example of that. It doesn’t phase him and he copes really well. He was in kennels and despite doing really well, given everything we were able to find him a foster home in the UK. He is good with other dogs but also really enjoys the company of people so could live either as an only dog or with other dogs. He has not been cat tested but we could arrange it. Jimbo could live with older and very respectful children who can understand that he cannot see and act accordingly. He walks brilliantly on the lead and does a great job of finding his way around. Whilst a garden is not essential, we do feel that he would ideally benefit from one so that he can adjust to his new surroundings at his own pace without necessarily having to go for walks straight away. As with all of our adoptions, adopters will be fully supported by our team and our trainer post adoption to ensure Jimbo can thrive. Blind dogs are often deeply bonded to their people. They listen harder, trust more deeply and build extraordinary connections. , this has caused him to be overlooked for many years. His wounds have healed and he forms wonderful bonds with his carers once he has learnt to trust them.Kai is a medium sized Podenco Andaluz, who is super sociable with other dogs and loves to play. He really takes a lot of comfort from other canine company and would need another dog in the home to take a lead from. He is very nervous with strangers, but is a little calmer around the volunteers at the shelter who is knows. He will require a patient home who can help him build his confidence and he will also need a garden so he has a safe space before he has to explore the wider world. A more rural area would also be beneficial. He does walk well and calmly on the lead.Kai has spent some time in foster in Spain in a home and was showing signs of curiosity to be with people, he was very drawn to the man in the home and after a few hours was coming inside the house for attention, but when outside he was easily startled so secure 6ft fencing in the garden a must. Hope for Podencos

, she was very thin and very scared when she was rescued back in October 2021. Sadly this is where she remained until she came to foster in the UK, as is common for many podencos in local rescues, they are overlooked no matter how hard the associations try to get them seen. Kiara walked well on the lead locally to the shelter but has taken some time to adjust to walking in the UK where it is busier. She needs a garden as she enjoys being outside and is used to having this space. Since being in the foster home she has really sought out human company and belly rubs, even playing with toys inb the home. We think a home with older children and adults would be the best match for her, she can still be a little startled and could find the unpredictability of young children a little overwhelming. She really enjoys the company of other dogs and get6s confidence from them but she is not the most playful with them.As you can see from her pictures Kiara is carrying a little extra weight, whilst she has no health concerns she is currently on a weight management programme to help her loose the extra pounds and this would need to continue in her foster or forever home.Kiara is neutered, vaccinated and tested negative for all Mediterranean diseases. She is initially a little aloof with new people, we don’t know what she’s been through in the past but with patience & understanding in a home that can continue building her confidence she will soon be able to learn how to fully trust and love humans again. In the short time they have been focused on her, she has come on in leaps and bounds and is a happy girl with a wagging tail when she is around people she knows - so we know that she will continue this progress once she finds her people and is in a home.Nela has been in the shelter since December 2023 so a longer term resident that has sadly been overlooked. She was found abandoned in a street in Almonte. She is around 14kg so a small/medium sized pod. As she is on the more insecure side initially, we would be looking for a home that doesn’t have young children and she’d also really benefit from a garden for her to gradually get used to her new world. Nela wouldn’t be suitable for city life as it would likely be too overwhelming for her.Nela could live as an only dog or with other dogs, and hasn’t been tested with cats but we are arranging for this to happen. , he was such a fearful boy he froze when they tried to take him out of his kennels. The GDS team have done incredible work to help him understand that not all humans are bad, but he has clearly been mistreated before being taken into the perrera.Oscar will really benefit from a multi-dog household, as you can see from his pictures, he is particularly bonded with his buddy Monkey the gun dog in his foster home. We would say no cats or children at this stage as this dear boy continues to find his feet living life as a pet. He needs a rural home with a garden for him to play in off lead safely.Oscar is fearful of all humans until he can slowly start to build a bond with them, like he has his foster mum Sarah. He is food motivated which has really helped with his training, he walks well on the lead and is house trained. He has started to play with toys, keeping ti simple with apples he has found in his local off lead field that he likes to run about with!All this boy needs is a loving patient home that will accept him for his nerves and give him the space to work out he is safe and the gentle pushing to help him discover the joys of life.Oscar is neutered, vaccinated, and tested negative for all Mediterranean diseases. , however he couldn’t stay there permanently and sadly ended up in a rescue where he was put in a kennel with another uncastrated boy and an unneutered girl which meant there was lots of fights and he had been bitten many times. Our partners found him very thin, with wounds and sore eyes. Since then he moved to a foster home in Spain with a much calmer environment where he really blossomed both in health and personality. He put on weight, his wounds healed and his spirit slowly started to return. He’s now moved to a foster home in the UK with another dog where he is continuing to progress and has made such a big transition in the month he has been here. Like many podencos, he is a little aloof at first, but does warm up and soon learns to trust. Once you have gained that, he gets very excited for you to put his harness on ready to go for a walk and he loves to hold hands/paws with you and enjoy a fuss. He’s the happiest little soul once you return from being out and about but does still have nervous moments. We know that in time, these will disappear but they are understandable given his past. He is good with other well balanced dogs and forms lovely bonds - he had a wonderful relationship with a small female pod in Spain and now he’s in the UK he gets on well with the female podenco cross in the home. We do think he would really benefit from another dog in his permanent home, as he does look to them for confidence. Quijote can be a little nervous of men in particular, which isn’t uncommon in podencos, but if there are adult males in the home it is something any adopter would need to be aware of. We are confident given his overall progress in a month that he would be able to build a bond with men in time. He will happily come to his main foster carer who is female for a fuss on his terms and sometimes he’ll choose to sit next to her on the sofa. He’s also happy to take himself off to his own bed and relax there. He can be left in the home with the other dog without a problem for a few hours at a time - he hasn’t been destructive at all. He currently sleeps downstairs and will go all through the night without an issue.He travels well in the car and gets quite excited to be out and about but soon settles down on the journey. He walks well on the lead but can pull at times. He’s been for his first cafe visit and whilst he was nervous, he did really well and settled down nicely. We know that he will continue to progress with time as he’s made such brilliant strides already. He loves to sniff and potter about so we do think he’d benefit from a garden. He can be a little nervous of new things and loud noises so we don’t think a busy city centre would work for him, but suburbs or a town or village would be fine. , loveable lad Robbie turned up at a home in Almeria where he was cared for by a family with young children and cats. He did absolutely brilliantly with them but they weren’t in a position to keep him, so he thankfully bagged himself a spot with one of our amazing fosters where he was living in a home with lots of other dogs and he did really well - good with the other dogs, and he was relaxed around the home. Robbie then made his way to the UK and into a home and initially struggled to settle after the transport which led to him moving to a foster home who are experienced with podencos. Since the move, he’s back to his old self and will happily snooze the day away! He’s put on weight which has really helped his overstimulation around food although he will steal other dogs food given the chance so this will need to be managed. We’re ideally looking for a home with one or two well balanced confident dogs that enjoy a play and won’t be intimidated by his size but can also continue to be wonderful role models for him. In new environments (like a recent trip to his fosters office for the day), he can still find things a little too exciting initially and struggle to settle but with a calm routine in the home he is a lazy boy and as he continues to bond with his humans we think he’ll start settling much quicker in new places. He’s managed to relax in the pub on a few occasions and is happy being out and about in public places. He loves people and is very friendly - enjoying a snuggle on the sofa and eager to please. He’s used to being out and about, walking on a lead although is a big boy so can be strong! He is also good in the car.
