They were very worried that these 2 babies wouldn't survive the winter as they were already so frail, and temperatures had already dropped to -5 degrees. It usually gets to -20 during their winter months. In the photos, Adele is attached to Beyonce's side. Over time though, these 2 girls have made many new friends and are no longer reliant on each other. They both now kennel share with different dogs and are settled and happy with their groups. Unfortunately, when letting them back together for play dates, it seems that these 2 have really grown apart and no longer enjoy spending time with each other.Adele has never lived in a home before and so would require time, patience, understanding and lots of positive based training to help her learn the ropes of home life.\n\nWith other dogs: Adele loves playing out with the other pups and adult dogs, if she were to live with anotehr dog, they would need to be of similar or larger size than Adele. With cats:Adele is has met a cat whilst in our care. She was off lead and showed no prey drive. Please note - it was a very confident cat that she met so if she were to meet a cat that was skitty and ran, it is likley that she would chase due to a dogs natural instinct to do so.\n\nAdele loves nothing more than running around our fields and yards with all of her doggy friends. She's not ready to come inside a minute before the kennel shift is over. Adele has moderate to high energy levels at present.\n\nAdele has never before lived in a home. She will need to be left for minimal periods to begin with so she can settle in and realise that she is safe. This time alone (with another dog) can be built up so she'd be able to be left up to around 4 hours\n\nAdele is not yet lead trained. She is still very unsure about being handled and so lead training will come once she has built a bond with her new family\n\nAdele has no form of basic training. This will all come in time once she has settled and learnt to fully trust her adopters\n\nClick the button below to start the adoption application process!

She loves her bestie Roxy but even then, they've had a couple of squabbles started by Amber. We would consider Amber living with another dog but it would be based on the right match. The dog would need to be large in size, definately no smaller than her. With cats:Amber has not been cat tested. She's not yet comfortable on a collar and lead and so it wouldn't be safe to cat test her at this time.\n\nAmber is an active girl, she loves been out in the fields playing with her friends. When she's lead trained, we think she's going to love some long hikes.\n\nAmber has never been in a home and so any time alone would need to be slowly built up over time.\n\nAmber does accept a collar / harness and lead. She is showing great potential, she just needs her confidence building.\n\nAmber has no form of basic training.\n\nClick the button below to start the adoption application process!

Sex: FemaleAge: 9 months oldSize: SmallBreed: Mixed Breed\n\nIntroducing Bella:Bella originally travelled to the UK from a shelter in Romania, with her sister Sahsa by her side the whole way. These public shelters in Romania are extremely overcrowded, very short on funds for food, the dogs have barely any shelter from the harsh weathers and sadly dog attacks are becoming more and more regular. These 2 babies wouldn't have stood a chance if they'd have stayed much longer.Since arriving with us Bella has shown to be the most gentle of souls. She is the quietest of all of the youngsters that we currently have in but she's very sweet and loving, she adores her 1-1 time with our volunteers.Bella's journey from the public shelters in Romania, the 3 day drive to the UK and her time at Oakwood, has all been right beside her sister Sasha. They really do love each other so much and it would be the most amazing happy ending for these girls to be adopted together. We realise that this is a big ask though and so we are also open to the option of them being adopted seperately to at give them a bigger chance of finding their forever homes.\n\nWith other dogs: Bella has shown us that she is great with other dogs and we can mix her with all of our dog friendly dogs with no issues at all. With cats:Bella was cat tested for a second time due to a lot of avoidance the first time and her sister being with her. Upon the 2nd cat test, she was able to be off lead however, she was truly terrified of the cat. She was visibly shaking and avoiding eye contact at all costs. She didn't show any prey drive so with very slow and steady interactions, we believe that she'd be ok to live with a cat in the home.\n\nBella is still just a baby, she currently shows moderate energy levels but she has recently started going out on walks which she is absolutely loving\n\nBella has never in her life been left fully alone as she's always had the company of other dogs. There's a possibility that Bella could suffer with superation anxiety until she gets used to being alone, this will need to be worked on and built up slowly\n\nBella has recently started lead training and is absolutely loving it\n\nBella has no form of basic training. She will also need toilet training in her new home\n\nClick the button below to start the adoption application process!

Billi, a 4 years old male Crossbreed available for adoption from Oakwood Dog Rescue in East Riding of Yorkshire

Billi

SexMale
Age4 years
BreedCrossbreed

Sex: BilliAge: 4 years oldSize: SmallBreed: Mixed Breed\n\nBilli's Story:Billi was rescued from a public shelter in Romania. These shelters are severely over capacity and small dogs like Billi are the most likely to be attacked, a lot of dogs don't survive these attacks and so Billi was such a lucky boy to get out.Upon arriving at Oakwood, we noticed Billi was not fully weight bearing on his BL leg. We put him on pain meds and kennels rest but when this wasn't working, we sent him straight from X-rays.Unfortunately, it was found that Billi's hind left leg had luxating patella grade 3/4. He also had an old break that has healed so abnormally that you could feel the bone almost protruding through his skin, even with the gentlest touch. After many discussions with different specialists, it was decided that the best plan of action was to amputate the left hind leg. Billi has now had this surgery and is in recovery. He is doing amazingly well and seems so much happier without the constant pain that he must've been in.His hind right leg does also have milder luxating patella [grade 2]. When speaking with the vet regarding this, the answer was 50/50 as to whether he will be absolutely fine living with this with no further medical intervention and it seems to be causing him absolutely no issues at this time however, there is always the possibility later in life that the luxating patella could get worse and he could need anything from pain management to possible surgical intervention. The vet advised there was just no way of knowing but at this time, Billi is a very happy and heatlhy boy and has now been signed off from veterinary care regarding his legs. We understand that this can all sound very scary to a potentail adopter but after surviving all of the above, Billy is the most loving, cuddly and happy boy that loves every minute of his lift and he deserves the chance of a loving, forever home as much as any of the others, we really hope that people can see past his missing leg and love him for the sweet boy that he is.\n\nWith other dogs: Billi has shown to do well with all the dogs that we have mixed him with so far. He does get a little too excited with the girls and will try to hump them. If they don't allow it, he will stand and bark at them :/We'd consider Billy being adopted into a home with another / other dogs based on the right match however, we believe he'd also be absolutely fine as an only dog. With cats:Billi was very gently with the cat upon testing, he showed no prey drive.\n\nBilli has shown to be an active little dog although he's soon distracted when snuggles are offered.\n\nBilli has been lucky enough to spend a few weeks in foster with one of our staff members and we believe in a new home, he'd be fine to be left up to 4-5 hours\n\nBilli has been doing great with his lead training although he has started to show signs of slight dog reactivity which is currently being worked on\n\nBilli has no form of basic training althought he's done great with his toilet training. It's likely that's he'll have accidents in his new home but with consistency and patience, he has shown that he can very quickly pick up toilet training in a home\n\nClick the button below to start the adoption application process!

Blue came in to our care from another rescue that was closing down and he was at risk of having nowhere to go.Blue is an Australian Cattle Dog, also known as a Blue Heeler. They are a working breed and are are highly intelligent, loyal and incredibly energetic, thriving off mental and physical stimulation. Blue will need someone who can provide him with plenty of exercise and mental enrichment in order for him to live a fulfilled life.We are ideally looking for someone that has experience with this breed and understands their breed traits. We can discuss Blue in more detail with anyone who is interested in adopting him.As far as we are aware, he has never been around children. This combined with his boisterous nature means we will not be looking to place him in a home with children.Blue seems to enjoy the company of other dogs and may even benefit from living with another dog so we are open to doggy meet and greets.

Sex: MaleAge: 10 years oldSize: Large (Lab size)Breed: Mixed breed\n\nHey guys, Bobbie here! I originally arrived at Oakwood back in Janurary 2021. When I first arrived I was very scared due to how mistreated I was in Romania. It took me a while to begin to trust people again but I managed to find a home in March 2021. In the home I was very loved and the last 14 months I was there I made lots of progress in so many ways. Sadly, I have now come back to Oakwood due to compatibility issues with my family. I am an incredibly loyal boy and tend to bond strongly with one person. For this reason I would prefer a 1 person household that I can give all my love and attention to. The humans said they understand what a huge ask this is though so they will also be happy to look at a 2 person household too, it just may take me a little longer for me to feel safe with meeting 2 new people at the same time. Unfortunately I can really struggle with new people and introductions need to be very slow so that I feel safe - but I promise that I will be the bravest boy and do my absolute best as I really do want nothing more than to meet my forever family. Once I trust you, I guarentee that you will have a best friend for life. My ideal home would have minimal visitors. I'm a lazy boy who enjoys snoozing in my comfy beds, don't let that fool you though because I am super clever really! I enjoy enrichment and love my snuffle & lick mats. I also really enjoy obedience and trick training and it seems to entertain the humans when I show off all the cool tricks I know. I also love a blast on our big field, especially with my girlfriend Alex <3\n\nThe staff here at Oakwood have been helping me get used to lead walking. I will now walk around the centre on a lead just fine, and I'll walk out the back to our further away fields but I struggle out in the front car park as all of the people and cars scare me and I just want to get back to the safety of the rescue as soon as possible. My adopter will need to understand that I may never be a dog that enjoys going on walks but I will enjoy sunbathing in the garden and lots of cuddles and quality time with you. Things I do love: Having a brush! Venison! Chest, belly & butt scratches! Up until recently, I have been on a single protein venison diet as I have suspected allergies- my ears go red and I scratch them if I eat something I shouldn't. It does seem to be mild allergies and we are currently experimenting what triggers it the most. So far we have found that fish and lamb don't really agree with me. I am now eating a delicious hypo allergenic food that the humans bought me and I am doing great on it. They say it costs no more than normal dog food and I feel amazing on it. They say I have become very puppy like, giddy and silly, in the best possible way. I seem to make them laugh a lot <3 Dogs: I was very undersocialised with other dogs but have made progress with this and have shown I can have dog friends, both male and female, so although I need to live as an only dog I could have a visiting dog friend. I cannot live with cats. Full details of return will be given to potential adopters. I really hope to see your application! Bruno, a 4 years old male Lurcher available for adoption from Hull Animal Welfare Trust in East Riding of Yorkshire

Bruno

It breaks our hearts to think of what Bruno must have gone through, but it gives us such relief to know that he was rescued in time, before the worst happened. His journey to a full recovery will be a slow and careful process involving veterinary care, a controlled feeding regime to get them gradually back to a healthy weight, and most importantly lots of love. Although he still has quite a way to go before he’s back to full health, we feel that he is now ready to find his forever home and that he will benefit greatly from being in a home environment with a loving family. Bruno will need an adult only home with someone who is willingly to support him in his recovery and provide him with a calm and safe environment to flourish in. Bruno is still under assessment with other dogs.He cannot live with cats or small animals. If you think you can give Bruno his second chance in life, please call us any day between 11am – 2pm on 01430 423986.

Sex: FemaleAge: 4 years oldSize: LargeBreed: Mixed breed\n\nIntroducing... sweet girl Carrie! Carrie's Story:Are you looking for a new best friend? Then look no further than Carrie!Carrie has recently arrived with us at Oakwood and with her sweet personality and kind nature, we are hoping she is not going to be with us too long before she finds her forever home.We were contacted about Carrie as she was being held in shelter in Romania where she was getting picked on by the other dogs. She is a large girl and so was in with lots of other large dogs, but this gentle girl wanted nothing more than to be out of that enclosure and to be with the volunteers that showed her kindness. We were told that the volunteers had spent a couple of hours with Carrie and when it was time to go back into the enclosure, she was shaking and holding on to them, pleading with her eyes, to not be put back. We were told that she was not coping at all and she is one of the dogs were they would expect to one day be notified that she had been attacked and didn't survive :(We couldn't let this gentle soul stay there any longer and agreed to accept her into our care.Carrie is very human and dog friendly but can be very nervous until she gets to know you. She is very scared of the world around her and is not yet ablet to walk on a collar and lead due to fear. She loves playing with dogs, loves her food, and is starting to copy the other dogs and play with toys <3\n\nWith other dogs: Carrie has been great with every dog that we have mixed her with so far. She can be very wary of them to start off with but once she starts to trust them, she is off running around the field playing chase with them.Unfortunately, due to her time in the shelter, Carrie will food guard from other dogs and so for this reason, must be rehomed as an only dog. With cats:Carrie is untested with cats therefore, she can not be rehomed with them\n\nCarrie is a young girl with lots of energy. She will thrive in a home that can give her lots of physical and mental stimulation as she may not be brave enough for lead walks for the first few weeks / months\n\nCarrie is very people oriented and will require training to build up her time alone. To begin with, she will need to be left as little as possible. In her kennel, she cries a lot so it's possible that she could develop separation anxiety in a home\n\nCarrie is not yet lead trained. This will come once she has settled into her new home and has built a bond with her new family\n\nCarrie has no form of basic training. Sex: MaleAge: 1 year oldSize: MediumBreed: Mixed Breed\n\nIntroducing.. the ever so handsome Chester!!Chester's Story:Chester was rescued from a public kill shelter in Romania. These places are a living hell and poor Chester spent his days making himself as small as possible and hiding away trying to be invisible. Luckily, he was spotted by the team at PPTF that took him off to their private shelter and from here, he was transferred to us at Oakwood Dog Rescue to begin his new life.Chester is a very timid boy that doesn't yet have any trust at all with people. He is going to need a calm and patient home with lots of love, time and understanding.Chester has had several viewings whilst being at the rescue but, due to his nerves, he does become very vocal and keeps his distance from anyone new. We need someone that can see past this and understand why he's so fearful of strangers because, behind all of the noise is a sensitive pup that's had a hard life and had some serious mistreatment from humans.Once Chester's trust has been earnt, he is the most loving, playful and cheeky boy, he just needs someone that's going to understand him and give him that time that he needs for him to let his guard down and let his true personality shine. With dogs: Chester has been amazing, playful and respectful of every dog that we have mixed him with at the rescue. Due to his nerves, he can be very vocal when meeting a dog for the first time but this tends to settle down after a couple of mixes once he knows that they are not going to hurt him. With cats: Chester is not yet cat tested.\n\nChester is an active young dog and loved to play with his friends. His energy levels could increase in the home but we'd currently assess him as having moderate energy levels\n\nChester has never been left alone before and so any time alone may need to be slowly built up. Having at least one other dog around should help him feel more settled but he shouldn't be left for any more than 3-4 hours due to him never living in a home before and requiring training\n\nWe have not yet tried Chester on a lead due to being new into rescue\n\nChester has shown to have no form of basic training\n\nClick the button below to start the adoption application process!

Oakwood’s purpose-built facilities are designed to prioritise welfare, offering enrichment, exercise, and calm kennel environments supported by dedicated volunteers. Funded entirely by public generosity and supported by on-site social enterprises, the rescue continues to help vulnerable dogs from the UK and overseas while making difficult welfare decisions only when all other options have been exhausted.

More Information

The East Riding of Yorkshire offers a combination of coastal areas, open countryside and quieter towns, making it suitable for many rescue dogs. Dogs adopted here are often placed with homes that can provide calm surroundings and regular exercise. Rescues operating in the region frequently work across wide areas, using foster homes to assess dogs before rehoming. Adopting a dog locally helps ensure dogs are placed into environments that suit their temperament and needs.
