Hope for Podencos

, one of five puppies born safely in the care of one of our wonderful partner shelters. Their mum, Reina, is a small Podenco Andaluz who was rescued from the streets while heavily pregnant, and she gave birth shortly after arriving. Thankfully everything went smoothly, and Reina has been a devoted, gentle mum to her little ones.Ada and her siblings are still very young, so their individual personalities are only just beginning to emerge. They’ve started exploring, playing, and showing those first hints of the curious, joyful nature we expect from pups raised with love and security. We don’t know who dad is, though a collie is a possibility.As Ada grows, we’ll learn more about her character — but for now, she’s a healthy, happy puppy getting the very best start in life.Podenco puppies/adolescents are very cute, but they need consistent training, patience and understanding especially through the adolescent phase where we find a lot of people tend to struggle. If you apply to adopt a podenco puppy, please ensure you have properly thought through the challenges you might face whilst they mature into a wonderful adult where you can then reap the rewards of your hard work. . Found in a state of deep shock, he had survived in an environment surrounded by deceased dogs and skeletal remains. When he arrived at our partner shelter, he was severely underweight, dehydrated and emotionally shut down. Loud noises and sudden movements terrified him, and he oftern withdrew from human contact.Angel’s healing has been slow but steady. With patience, care and gentle trust-building sessions, he’s learning that kindness exists. He now understands that food comes regularly, that humans can be gentle and he is finally safe. He now enjoys regular walks. He’s good with traffic, although a little wary of lorries. He’s sociable with other dogs and often looks to them for reassurance.Angel is looking for a calm, patient adopter with experience of nervous dogs. A quiet home (city life would not suit him) with canine companion(s) to help him continue to build confidence. Angel is carrying a little extra weight at the moment, so his adopters will need to help him gently slim down with a healthy routine,Angel has endured more than any dog should. , the difficult decision has been made to re-home Babu. Changes in the family have led to a busy household at times, with regular visits from young children, which is not the right environment for Babu to feel at ease and thrive. He is a gentle, affectionate podenco who forms deep bonds with his humans. Here is what his current owners have to say about him:“Babu is a lovely boy who shows real loyalty and affection once he gets to know you. In the home he settles very quickly and enjoys being close to his people. His favourite place for sleeping and downtime is his crate, where he happily watches the world go by.He can be a little unsure at times, but with consistency and a calm approach he really thrives and settles into a routine.Babu loves being fussed, especially around his neck and ears, and will often come and gently rest his head in your lap just to be close. On a day-to-day basis he is wonderful company and really just wants to feel safe, loved and part of the home.”In the right home, Babu is a calm and rewarding companion. He walks well on the lead in quieter environments and enjoys getting out and about, particularly in more rural areas. At home, he is settled and content, happily pottering around before retreating to his crate - which he sees as a safe and comforting space. He is clean in the house, not destructive, travels well in the car, and is able to be left during the day.Babu is a sensitive dog who can become overwhelmed in busy or unpredictable environments - this is anxiety based. When he is given space, routine and a calm environment, he is able to regulate well and show his true, relaxed nature.His current owners have worked extensively with trainers and behaviourists, and he has made significant progress. He can still be reactive to other dogs when on the lead, particularly if they are close. However, this is much improved and is manageable with the right handling, distance and awareness. He now walks far more calmly and confidently overall, and is able to pass many everyday triggers that he previously found difficult. He is an intelligent dog who learns quickly with consistent training. Food rewards are an important part of his ongoing training, particularly for building positive associations and confidence. Babu does have a history of resource guarding around food, which has been greatly improved through careful management and training - and again is anxiety based.Babu is looking for a quiet, adult-only home where he can enjoy a more peaceful and predictable lifestyle. He would suit someone with experience of sensitive or anxious dogs who understands the importance of routine, calm handling and giving a dog space when needed.He could live as an only dog or alongside another, well-balanced dog, as he has previously shown. A home in a quieter area with access to quiet walks would help him continue the positive progress he has already made.Babu has so many wonderful qualities and, in the right environment, he offers a huge amount of love, loyalty and companionship. He is a deeply affectionate dog who bonds closely with his people and will flourish in a home that understands his needs and gives him the stability he is looking for.Babu will be fostered or adopted with ongoing support and guidance from ourselves, our trainer, and the behaviourist who has been working with him. . Clearly no longer useful because of his age, he was cast aside with Flamenca and Gitana. At our partner kennel he has proved himself to be a really lovely boy. He is calm and quiet, choosing to spend his time out in the big paddock having a trot around and sniffing - really soaking in his environment. We think a garden would be particularly lovely for Bailaor to enjoy in his retirement. He’s a great dog, confident even with new people and very nicely balanced. He is good with other dogs and will happily live with them, but would also be fine as an only dog. He is looking for someone to see him and love him so he has the chance to enjoy home comforts for the first time in his life. He is a healthy boy and doing very well - he still has wonderful moments of play with some of the other dogs in the paddock which is a joy to see!Bailaor is neutered, vaccinated and tested negative for all Mediterranean diseases excluding Babesia - as already stated he has tested positive and is receiving treatment for this, so we can retest for the all clear. , unsure where to go or who to trust. Thankfully he was rescued and is now thriving in the care of our wonderful super foster in Spain. With patience, routine and kindness, this sweet boy is blossoming more every day. He recently even met a group of young students - he wasn’t too sure about sitting on their laps, but he handled the whole experience with gentle curiosity and no stress.Like many Podencos, Bambi can be a little shy when he first meets new people, but it doesn’t take long before he wants to be right by your side. At home he’s a quiet, easy companion, happy to settle. Outside in the garden he can be a bit barky when he spots cats (although within the home he has been fine with the resident cats). He gets on well with other dogs and is confident on walks. Hope for Podencos

. The shelter she was with first tried to catch her with a manual trap but the visitors to the golf course had all been feeding her so she wasn’t tempted! Thankfully they’d just got a new remote control trap that was bigger - with some tasty sausages and a good dose of patience it was a success! When she was the golf course, no one could get anywhere near her, let alone touch her. Once she arrived to the shelter, she melted within 24 hours!Caramela is a young, confident, adolescent podenco - all pods are full of character and can be cheeky, but at this age they really do push boundaries and can at times really test your patience. She is a mischief maker, goofy, funny and a real opportunist. She loves to play with toys and will steal anything she can get her paws on, and she has mastered the puppy dog eyes so gets away with it! She is very agile, as a lot of podencos are, so keeping her safe and secure will be key. She has a good nose on her and can be strong willed on her walks so will need some loose lead walking. We’re looking for adopters that have a good sense of humour can work with her through this adolescent stage - enjoying the wins and get past the tougher moments! She will reward you handsomely - whilst she can be a little shy with people initially, once she trusts you she is so loveable and affectionate. Caramela can be a little more wary of dogs her size or bigger, but tends to do better with smaller dogs. She could also live as an only dog. In fact, due to her confidence levels we think she is really adaptable and could live in many homes. Caramela is neutered, vaccinated and snap tested negative for Mediterranean diseases - we are in the process of re-testing her in full. Hope for Podencos

, a beautiful young Podenco with soft chocolate and fawn colouring and an even softer heart. Rescued from an industrial estate where he had been surviving alone. When he first arrived at our partner shelter, Caramello was around a year old and utterly overwelmed by his new surroundings. For a time he shut down completely and was too frightened to leave his kennel.With patience and gentle encouragement Caramello has begun to blossom. He now enjoys exploring at his own pace and takes great comfort from calm, friendly dogs around him, He adores canine companionship and thrives when he has another dog to follow and learn from.Caramello will flourish in a calm, patient home wiht people who understand that trust takes time. A confident resident dog would be a huge benefit to him, helping him continue his journey from frightened youngster to secure, loving companion. A quieter environment with a garden would also help him to settle into home life.This lovely boy has overcome so much already. Now he’s ready for a home where he can continue to grow, at his own pace. Hope for Podencos

, along with her mother, and sister Estrella. Her sister and mother have both been adopted and are living in their forever homes. Cati was living in a foster home in Spain with many other podencos and is now in the foster home in the UK as an only dog. Cati is a sweet girl but is very shy initially and a month into her foster home in the UK she is now starting to show a little more of her personality. When her foster dad comes home from work, she stands up on the sofa and is very waggy tailed as she waits to greet him. She is also becoming more curious around the home, especially with the lovely smells that come from the kitchen! She is no bother in the home at all and hasn’t been at all destructive. She can be left for a few hours with no concerns and she sleeps downstairs on the sofa and goes through the night. She is clean in the house, walks really well on the lead and is just starting to relax into car journeys a little bit more. She has her safe spot, which is on her sofa, and after the trip from Spain took a lot of coaxing to come off but thats changing now. She really enjoys being out in the garden and on walks - we do think a home with a garden is a must for Cati as that way she can progress in her own time without needing to go on walks from day one after a move to her forever home. She doesn't actively seek out affection that often but is happy to be stroked and she also enjoys a belly rub and a scratch! She is happy for people to come and sit next to her on the sofa in close proximity and we know in time she’ll really start to relax and learn to fully trust. Cati hasn’t proven to be much of a foodie since her move to the UK but in a home with other dogs in Spain she could sometimes be a little protective over her food when other dogs were around and will also try and steal food from the others - this is not uncommon with rescue dogs, so if she goes to a home with other dogs which is our preference as we think it would help her to progress quicker, this will need to be managed and can also be worked on with the support of our trainer. Whilst our preference is a home with other dogs, Cati could also live as an only dog with a kind, patient adopter or foster who can help her blossom just as she is doing with her wonderful fosters. Cati wouldn’t be suitable for a busy city - a town, village or somewhere more rural would be ideal. We think Cati could live with older children, as long as they are respectful of her space. Cati is a wonderful girl who just needs a chance to really blossom and show her full wonderful personality. Cati has been neutered, vaccinated and has tested negative for all Mediterranean diseases. , like so many podencos is unknown but luckily found his way into the care of one of our partner kennels and now into foster in the UK! This is what his foster mum Sid has to say about him:“He’s a lovable, playful lad who thrives on routine and is doing really well with training. He’s crate trained (sleeping overnight and during mealtimes – he is cheeky!), fully toilet trained, and very food-motivated, so he’s always keen to learn.He gets on well with everyone in the household, is tolerant of the younger child and enjoys running around and playing tug. Chico loves to play – either by himself or with his humans – and while he can be a bit mouthy at times, he has great bite inhibition and adjusts his play depending on who he’s with. He also enjoys a cuddle with the adults and will happily fall asleep in your arms.He loves his walks and walks well on the lead, though he can get excited if he spots a squirrel! He’s friendly and polite when meeting other dogs and people.”Chico has bonded hard with his foster mum and loves cuddles and playtime with her, he can get a little over excited like any adolescent so toys are a great stimulant and release for him. He gets on with all other members in the home, including the children who he also enjoys playing with. He does have a high prey drive and gets very excited on walks at squirrels, this can lead to some pulling so requires ongoing training.He sleeps well through the night and is crate trained, he has been left solo for short periods of time with no issues - he is currently the only dog in the home which suits him fine. Although he does love greeting other dogs on walks with a polite play bow so could live with other dogs.He is a foody so this needs a little ongoing training around human meal times and counter surfing, but is great for training him. He will store his high value treats for later - hiding them around the house and garden. He is quick to learn and has basic commands down after just a month in the home.Chico has taken so much in his stride in his short time in foster - he is great in the car, is happy on walks in his harness and collar, happy having his nails trimmed. (less keen on the bath!) He can still find some things a little scary and finds the local kebab shop daunting, but he is progressing and improving daily. Chico is loved by everyone at the centre and is a happy, confident boy - he knows his name and will come to you for a fuss when called, He happily plays with all dogs in the kennels and loves attention from humans. He is active and walks well on the lead, and he is curious which alongside everything else means he is ready for the next part of his journey - to find that forever home and be spoilt living life as a pet!We think Chico could cope in pretty much any home set up, he does not need a garden and could live city or rural life. , who believe it or not is a full Podenco Andaluz - clearly dad a little less paddy! Irene felt he was being overlooked so made the decision to send him to UK foster in July of that year, not long after arriving in foster he was adopted. Sadly with the addition of children arriving in the home, Cisco has struggled to cope with the changes this has brought. After training and behaviour support the team and adopter made the difficult decision that the environment change was just too much for him and the kindest thing we could do was re-home him.We felt a reset with our specialist foster would give us a really clear picture of what is going on for him,and what he needs moving forward - this did him the world of good and he has now been moved to a foster that can re-create this for him.Cisco can be an anxious boy, and we feel that either a home as an only dog, or with a smaller calm dog would work best as he can find larger dogs of either sex intimidating. He is not the most playful dog, but will happily have a run alongside any companion in the garden or secure field.He has been able to really bond with the humans in both foster homes - although he can still be a little more shy with his foster dad he happily cuddles up to all once reassured! He was really curious and affectionate with the team when they met him in foster. He is a low energy dog that just loves to be lounging around on the sofa enjoying cuddles!Cisco needs a home with no children or cats, so that his stimulation levels can remain where we know they work best, nice and level with a very routine and predictable environment - that being said ha handles London life well. He walks beautifully on the lead and his anxieties drop away when he is confident with his human out and about.He is just such a loving and affectionate boy, he wants to be with people and made a fuss of. That being said he can be left for a few hours at a time. He is a foody and this has helped greatly with training and bonding.Cisco is neutered, vaccinated and tested negative for all Mediterranean diseases. (and brother Mars) are two adorable, playful little brothers who are full of fun, curiosity and that irresistible puppy charm. They were born safely in a loving home after their pregnant mum was rescued from the streets by a kind local family. Cosmo and Mars are currently in the care of our super foster in Spain. They are typical happy, mischievious puppies. The love to play, explore, bounce around, and turn absolutely anything into a toy. They’re friendly, sweet-natured and adore people - including children - making them wonderful companions for famililies who understand the needs of growing pups.Cosmo had the best possible start thanks to the family who rescued his mum. Now he’s ready for his next chapter - growing up in a forever home where he’ll be cherished and guided, and allowed to be come the wonderful dog he is meant to be.Podenco puppies/adolescents are very cute, but they need consistent training, patience and understanding especially through the adolescent phase where we find a lot of people tend to struggle. If you apply to adopt a podenco puppy, please ensure you have properly thought through the challenges you might face whilst they mature into a wonderful adult where you can then reap the rewards of your hard work. It is a wonderful experience to bring up a pod puppy, but it is not for the faint hearted!Cosmo will be vaccinated and tested for all Mediterranean diseases at the appropriate age.
