Albie

BreedPug

Hello... I’m Albie, and I’ve been told I’m ridiculously handsome and squishy!I came into rescue with my friend Eden after we were sadly left at a vet practice. I think Eden is absolutely brilliant and I’m very happy following her around, even if she sometimes acts like she could take or leave my company. I don’t mind though, I’m just a sweet boy who likes having friends around. I’m around four years old, and the humans say one of my best features is my adorable wiggly bum. Apparently, when I get excited to see people, my whole back end joins in. I just can’t help myself.I absolutely love cuddles, cosy naps, tasty snacks, and generally being adored. I’m a big fan of food, maybe a little too much of a fan if we’re being honest, so I’m currently on a diet to help me lose some weight and improve my breathing. It’s really important that my future family helps me stay fit and healthy so I can avoid any health issues and keep feeling my best.I’ll also need some surgery soon to help with my breathing, but through it all I remain a very happy, loving little guy who just wants affection and a comfy place to snooze.I could potentially live with older children who are gentle and kind. I may also be able to live with a cat, although I haven’t been cat tested yet, so slow introductions would be important. Unlike Eden, I actually quite enjoy having canine company and could happily live with another friendly dog.More than anything, I’m looking for a loving home where I can be spoiled appropriately (within my diet plan, of course), enjoy plenty of cuddles, and wiggle my way right into your heart. If you’re searching for a soft-hearted, affectionate companion with the sweetest little bum wiggles around... I think we might be perfect for each other.

Andy

Hertfordshire
SexMale
Age7 years
BreedCrossbreed

Our beloved Andy has been a part of the RATS Family for most of his life. Despite several attempts, he sadly hasn't yet found his pawfect home. He sees our kennels as his home and our volunteers as his furever family, but he could still be adopted if he found his ideal owner.Due to a traumatic incident in his past, Andy is paralysingly fearful of strangers. This is why he must always wear a muzzle on his walks. However once he has been introduced to you and establishes that he can trust you, he is the most loving, affectionate and gentle boy. Andy has met over a hundred people since he has been in our care, and he always remembers everyone. We're certainly in no rush to rehome our boy. He is very loved and very happy with us. He's known amongst our friends and supporters as King of the Kennels and he takes his Top Dog role very seriously, helping newbies to settle in and showing them the ropes. He's also a regular fundraiser for RATS, taking on sponsored challenges and running competitions. He's got to earn his keep after all :)I cannot live with children.I cannot live with other dogs.I cannot live with cats or small mammals.

BreedBorder Collie

Andy is a loveable boy, sweet, fun and has bags of character. His eye-catching colour makes him stand out from the crowd and everyone is pleased to meet him out on his walks. Being part sight-hound, he has a prey drive but he is in training for this and being collie smart, he is learning quickly. He has basic commands and would really benefit from a home that would be dedicated to continuing his training. He loves his walks and is come on well with his lead training, and stop commands. He loves to play with all his toys in the house and is clean in his crate at night and sleeps through to morning without a peep. He is very friendly with other dogs and loves to play as much as he can. He will happily find toys to entertain himself too. Travelling in the car entertains him for the whole journey, happily looking out the window. He is looking for a 5 star furever home, who will give time plenty of time and energy to continue his journey to becoming a really great dog.Kids around 10+. No cats

Apollo is a stunning 50kg Mastiff, with an enormous heart. He has amazing manners, as you would need from a dog of his size. He’s delightful on walks and meets both people and other dogs with calm, respectful behaviour when returned, but doesn't always want to stay and chat! He is muzzle trained and fly's the movement flag with pride. Apollo is a routine guy, he can be a bit dishevelled if things are out of kilter, but with a patient home he can work through things and adjust accordingly. He craves to be your shadow and just wants to share your world. He is and hearted dog with an even bigger personality. Whether you’re cooking dinner, folding laundry, or settling down on the sofa, Apollo wants to be right there beside you, he’s very much a “shadow” companion.Special Features• Size-blind: Apollo has no idea he’s enormous, which makes his cuddles both hilarious and wonderfully cosy.• Big love, big presence: He thrives on being involved but not every empty space needs to have Apollo in it, even if he thinks otherwise.Apollo is looking for a home that understands his gentle soul, playful spirit, and he’ll flourish in a calm environment where he can be included in your daily routines. If you’re ready to welcome a loyal, goofy, and endlessly affectionate companion, one who will adore you wholeheartedly and benefit from a bit of structure, Apollo might just be your perfect match.

Archie, a 8 years old male Chihuahua available for adoption from National Animal Welfare Trust in Hertfordshire

Archie

Hertfordshire
SexMale
Age8 years
BreedChihuahua

Hi everyone, my name's Archie and I may be little in size but have a big personality to make up for it.I have recently spent the last couple of months in Foster care with two staff members from the centre here, and I have loved being in a comfy home environment again. This has allowed the team to learn a lot more about my rehoming requirements. So here goes......I am going to need quite a special home that's nice and quiet with an owner who will give me lots of time, patience, reassurance and understanding as I am a very worried and scared little boy. I am not the type of dog that likes to be fussed or petted, so if you are looking for a lap dog that isn't me I'm afraid. However, the team have been working on other ways of interacting with me and I now know a "touch" command and I get so excited to do this, I'm such a good boy!I would also benefit from having a space in my new home just for me, where I can go to if I need some quiet time - my Foster Mums say I get very sleepy in the evening and will take myself off to my favourite "igloo" bed.I am spotlessly clean in the home, and I actually settle very well so would be fine to leave for a period of time - you will most probably find me asleep under my blanket upon your return as I love getting all snuggly and warm. I am not a fan of the rain, mud, getting dirty or being woken up from my snoozing though!Once I know and trust you the real Archie comes out to play - I just love my special mini sized balls and tug toys, we could have so much fun! I am actually very clever and know lots of commands, love enrichment activities and am keen to learn new things. I am good on the lead and really enjoy sniffy walks as long as I'm away from busy roads.I wouldn't be able to live with cats or dogs I'm afraid, but if you have an adult only home and would be willing to handle me carefully and build up my confidence I would love to meet you and show you the real Archie x

He enjoys his food and treats and hasn't shown any signs of allergies or food intolerance. He can be quite strong on the lead at the start of a walk but loves his play time with toys in the paddock and soon calms down after a run. Knows all basic commands.Arnie would be best suited with older teenage children as he is a big boy and doesn't realise his size. No cats or small furries.

Astra is a 3.5 year old male lurcher. He is very kind natured and walks really well on the lead but as expected due to the breed has a very high prey drive. Astra is a lovely dog! Thanks for clicking on my profile. I have now been matched with a loving family and I’m looking forward to settling in at my new home. However, many of my friends still need adopting. Can you offer them the love and devotion they deserve?Astra was found by the dog warden and brought into ARC as a stray. Unfortunately we don’t have any other history for Asta but he has a wonderful temperment and is a really kind hearted dog. Astra walks well on the lead but can pull if he sees something he wants to chase like a bird, rabbit, cat or squirrel. Astra seems to be good with other dogs but as he has only recently arrived at ARC he is still under assessment to see whether he could potentially live with another dog.I will receive initial health checks, up-to-date vaccinations, neutering/spaying (if age/timing is appropriate), flea treatment, worming treatment, microchipping and essential vet care that occurs during my stay.

He has previously had some guarding issues over his male owner because he felt so attached to him.Axel has no food aggression. He likes bones and to play with ball toys, but destroys soft toys and cuddlies. We think that Axel would suit a quieter more mature household, perhaps a retired couple, where he would get as much attention and love as he deserves. To enquire please call 01279 501547.I will receive initial health checks, up-to-date vaccinations, neutering/spaying (if age/timing is appropriate), flea treatment, worming treatment, microchipping and essential vet care that occurs during my stay.

Heathlands Animal Sanctuary is a volunteer-run animal rescue charity based in Royston, Hertfordshire, dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of unwanted domestic pets. The sanctuary supports dogs, cats, rabbits, and some caged birds, caring for most animals in foster homes rather than a central facility. Hope For Podencos is a charity dedicated to rescuing and rehoming Podencos, often known as Spain’s “Invisible Dogs” due to the abuse and neglect many endure as hunting dogs. Founded after Irene and Steve Allan moved to Spain in 2009 and became aware of the breed’s widespread mistreatment, the organisation focuses on giving these ancient, misunderstood dogs a second chance. Podencos are one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, yet are frequently abandoned and overlooked for adoption. Hope For Podencos works to raise awareness of their plight while helping them find safe, loving homes beyond the conditions they were bred to endure.

More Information

Hertfordshire’s position as a commuter county means many rescue dogs are matched with working households and family homes. Adoptions often focus on dogs that can adapt well to daily routines, time alone, and structured environments. Rescues in Hertfordshire place strong emphasis on home checks and lifestyle suitability to ensure successful placements. Adopting locally helps support responsible rehoming across both town and village settings.
