The North East offers a balance of urban centres, quieter towns and wide open spaces, making it suitable for many rescue dogs. Dogs adopted across the region are often matched based on temperament, energy levels and household setup. Many rescues focus on long-term placements and use foster care to prepare dogs for adoption. Regional adoption helps support dogs finding stable, loving homes close to where they were rescued.

Alfred & Joker, a 4 years old male German Shepherd available for adoption from German Shepherd Dog Rescue in the UK

German Shepherd Dog Rescue

Alfred & Joker

SexMale
Age4 years
BreedGerman Shepherd

Alfred and Joker, 4 year old brothers, have had a really tough start to the year. Sadly their owner died and they were taken in temporarily by his son, who lived on a caravan site and already had two large dogs of his own.We have seen videos of the boys separately walking with one of the sons dogs however we are currently unsure to what extent Alfred and Joker had already mixed with the son and his dogs and what environment they had previously lived in. We would advise caution and gradual introduction as we do know that despite several rescues and FB sites supporting the carer with food, vaccinations etc and appealing for someone to offer a large dog experienced foster home or kennels place over a number of weeks nobody had been able or willing to do so prior to GSDR stepping up to save these boys from euthanasia. When four large dogs proved too much for the sons neighbours and landlord he was evicted from the site and, with literally nowhere left to go, the devastated son felt he now had no other option left than to call the vets. Alfred and Joker were at very serious risk of being put to sleep the following day.As an emergency measure they were signed over to a local sanctuary, but one who don’t generally rehome such large dogs and we’re therefore only able to offer them an overnightassessment and subsequently a very temporary kennel space.Fortunately, as a final appeal was issued to various Gsd rescues, GSDR and a few volunteers became aware of the urgent need to bring breed experienced help to these boys and were within hours able to respond with an offer of the rescues support and a foster home.We are told that, in a secure field Alfred enjoyed chasing a ball but Joker had little interest in this and just did his own thing. After so much upheaval the boys were a little unsure of being brought out to meet yet another stranger and we’re not entirely welcoming to him, but nevertheless into the car they went. They travelled without issue but we’re then even less happy to see a border collie dog at the other end of their journey and took to guarding the car and home at any sight or sound. Based on what we do know so far of their past environment, and observing them over the following days, our volunteer believes that they may well have been used to guarding a yard / site in the past, as even he was unable to get up to the toilet in the nightwithout setting them off barking. This behaviour did however stop after just 3 days of patience and effort to gain their trust when the boys, laid quietly opposite him, suddenly decided that our volunteer required an immediate greet and lick, and have sought to be firm pals in the following four days since. As yet the three dogs have still not been mixed properly but Alfred and Joker are gradually becoming a little quicker torespond to their fosterer in varied scenarios and did for the first time yesterday stop barking at the sight of them passing by andthen standing still in their sight, some calming signals were then observed between all 3 dogs. Alfred and Joker may occasionally give a minor grumble to each other, EG if coming face to face in a small space, competing for a place nearest food etc but have shown no aggression to each other. If anything they are happy to lay all over each other. They have also seen people, a passing cat and various dogs, sheep, again initially barking robustly at them, bar the young cat and a young Labrador pup ahead, in a generally successful attempt to deter all comers. Alfred in particular seems very interested in ducks and geese in the fields, but whilst wanting to watch and pull towards them, unusually for him, did not bark. This barking behaviour has however largely reduced since taking to their fosterer. Both Alfred and Joker will counter surf given an opportunity, jump to try and eat from their dish before it hits the floor if not controlled, and seek to drink dry every puddle or bucket they may see. They are seemingly used to being on a settee when available.Interestingly they don’t necessarily bark on hearing other dogs, only when seeing them. It should be noted that if the boys were together they would both originally tend to bark very heavilyand seemingly have little training, save for perhaps having been deliberately taught to deter strangers, thus will require an experienced and determined home, willing to earn their trust, come what may. Separately Alfred would still bark, whilst Joker would become more inclined to ignore such distractions. Joker has however been observed as quite reliant on Alfred, initially running around looking for a means of getting back to him when taken out alone. For these reasons we are willing to consider splitting the boys if an experienced and committed home is available for each of them but it is vital that these boys are not let down or thrown into any uncertainty again. It may be that you will need to make a few visits and get to know them before they will trust you, or that a m

Anton, a Unknown old male Unknown available for adoption from Newcastle Dogs & Cats Shelter in Tyne and Wear

Newcastle Dogs & Cats Shelter

Anton

Tyne and Wear
SexMale
AgeUnknown
BreedUnknown

Anton is looking for an adult only home. He could potentially live with another dog, cat, or small animals. Anton came to us a very scared boy. He had been found tied to a fence and was understandably petrified. He didn’t know the people approaching him were there to help and warned them away with grumbles. Anton then arrived at the shelter and displayed the same fear response – he was so scared he didn’t even want to be looked at; he was completely shut down. Fast forward to now, and Anton has done amazingly! He is beginning to show us his fun and goofy side- he has grown very attached to certain members of staff and is really opening up with play bows, kisses, and leaning in for snuggles and fuss! Anton still has a long way to go – he is still a very scared boy which shows on his walks when outside of the shelter safety…but day by day, we see him sniff more, wag his tail a bit harder, and hold his head a little higher. Anton will need a very patient and experienced home to help him understand the world around him isn’t so scary and that he can be the playful pup we see flickers of here! We just know with the right home, and time, he will be an amazing friend to his new family as they help this special boy discover his true courage and capability. We have no doubt watching him learn and grow will bring true pride and joy to the home lucky enough to help him along his way! If you are interested in rehoming Anton, please fill out the application form below. Please note: due to limited resources we are unable to get back to everyone. If you do not hear from us you have been unsuccessful on this occasion. Apollo, a 3 years old male Bulldog available for adoption from Newcastle Dogs & Cats Shelter in Tyne and Wear

Newcastle Dogs & Cats Shelter

Apollo

Tyne and Wear
SexMale
Age3 years
BreedBulldog

Apollo could live with children 5+. He could live with other dogs and potentially cats and small animals (though we have no history on his behaviours around these animals). Apollo is a fabulous lad and a typical Bulldog who simply oozes personality and character! Apollo is a very friendly chap who can sometimes be a little over familiar…there is no such thing as as stranger to this boy and he greets everyone with the same boisterous enthusiasm and expectations of immediate belly rubs. He loves making friends and is happy to enjoy cuddles and fuss from everyone he meets! Apollo enjoys meeting other dogs and displays the same excitable behaviours as with humans so, if he is to go home with another dog, they will have to be tolerant of his eagerness to play and have fun! Apollo would benefit from an owner with a good understanding of bulldogs and their quirks…their goofy ways and their stubborn silliness! Apollo will bring so much fun and love to the home lucky enough to adopt him, there will certainly never be a dull moment with this lad around! Archer, a 4 years old male Staffordshire Bull Terrier available for adoption from Newcastle Dogs & Cats Shelter in Tyne and Wear

Newcastle Dogs & Cats Shelter

Archer

Tyne and Wear
SexMale
Age4 years
BreedStaffordshire Bull Terrier

Archer is looking for an adult only home with no other animals. Archer is a typical, daft Staffie who is full of energy! He is always on the go, he doesn’t often stop to think and can get himself a bit silly and overexcited, which can result in some undesirable behaviours. Archer needs an experienced family, who have a good understanding of Bull breeds and their boisterous and full-on ways. His family will need to help him work on displaying more calm behaviours and regulating his emotions better. He means well, but he will require patient and committed owners who are prepared to put in the time and effort to his training. He needs an active family who can keep up with his energetic nature and take him on lots of lovely adventures. He will need plenty of both mental and physical enrichment to keep him happy and healthy in body and mind and to prevent him from becoming bored and frustrated – which he will struggle to cope with. Archer will undoubtedly require time, patience and effort when he first goes home, but we know he has so much potential to be a truly fantastic addition to join the right family on their outdoor adventures, we have no doubt he will immensely reward their commitment to him. If you are interested in rehoming Archer, please fill out the application form below. Please note: due to limited resources we are unable to get back to everyone. He’s equally happy to head out on walking adventures, as he loves being out and about exploring. You really get the best of both worlds with this stunning chap! Arthur does have a sensitive side and would benefit from continued support with confidence building, particularly around other dogs. ** Desperate for Foster/Home **Aslan, is 5 year old and a gorgeous chunky boy.Sadly he is looking for a new home due to recently losing his mum and his dad needs to get back to work as at present he is looking after Aslan. Our volunteer went to meet him and took him out for a walk this is what he had to say.Aslan is a big dog, approx 50 kg. He’s very loving and no problem being stroked, happily took treats from me. Owner has done quite a lot of training with him as when they got him 2 years ago he did suffer from SA. He is much better now and does settle. Aslan walks well on the lead and doesn’t really pull, he tends to walk at the end of the lead but no pulling. He tends to ignore other dogs and has low level of interest in them especially small to medium dogs. He has more interest in large dogs and can react to them if they are reactive to him first.Aslan is very intelligent and listens well to his owner/handler. Austin, a 2 years old male Lurcher available for adoption from Durham Dogs & Cats Home in County Durham

Durham Dogs & Cats Home

Austin

County Durham
SexMale
Age2 years
BreedLurcher

Austin is a beautiful two-year-old Lurcher with a gentle soul and so much love to give. He’s a sweet, affectionate boy who may be a little timid when he first meets new people, but it quickly becomes clear that he truly wants to be loved and part of someone’s life.On walks, Austin is a pleasure to have by your side and generally walks nicely on the lead. However, he can be a little sensitive to sudden or unexpected noises, which can startle him. With a calm, patient owner to reassure him, he continues to gain confidence and enjoy his outings.Austin can also be a little unsure around other dogs and strangers at the moment. He tends to prefer keeping his distance and quietly watching them pass by rather than interacting. Because of this, he’ll need a patient and understanding owner who is willing to give him the time and space he needs to build trust and develop his confidence at his own pace.Due to his gentle and slightly timid nature, we believe Austin would thrive best in a calm, adult-only home. Dog-savvy teenage children may be considered following a successful introduction. Ideally, Austin would also be the only dog in the home while he continues to grow in confidence and settle into family life. With love, patience, and kindness, Austin has the potential to blossom into an incredibly loyal and devoted companion. Once he feels safe and secure, his affectionate personality really shines through. If you’re looking for a gentle, loving dog who just needs a little time and understanding to truly flourish, Austin could be the perfect addition to your home
